Cognitive and behavioral risk factors for low quality of life in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

BACKGROUND: With high survival rates for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), long-term quality of life is a prominent consideration in treatment. We concurrently evaluated cognition, behavior, and quality of life in child and adolescent ALL survivors and determined associations between them. METHODS: The sample included 83 controls (mean age: 12.5 years) and 71 ALL survivors (mean age: 11.9 years, mean age at diagnosis: 3.8 years). Participants completed measures of general intellectual abilities, math achievement, and fine motor skills. Parents and teachers completed a survey asses

Network structure of psychological resilience, cognitive reappraisal, and social problem-solving in relation to non-suicidal self-injury in a sample of Chinese university freshmen.

OBJECTIVE: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent among university students and represents a critical public health concern. This cross-sectional study investigated the prevalence of NSSI and its associated factors among freshmen at a university in central China. Using network analysis, we further examined the interrelationships among NSSI and three protective psychological constructs: resilience, cognitive reappraisal, and social problem-solving. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 3616 freshmen. After data screening, 2862 valid responses were included in the final an

Church-based problem-solving therapy for adolescent girls and young women with a history of gender-based violence in Zambia: study protocol for a hybrid type 1 randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in sub-Saharan Africa face a disproportionate burden of gender-based violence (GBV), HIV risk, and mental health challenges. Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of psychological interventions such as problem-solving therapy (PST), there is limited evidence on culturally adapted models for GBV-exposed AGYW that concurrently address HIV and mental health, particularly in settings with constrained mental health infrastructure. OBJECTIVE: This study outlines the protocol for a randomized controlled trial evaluating Mpata Yathu, a church-based

Are Mental Health, Family and Childhood Adversity, Substance Use and Conduct Problems Risk Factors for Offending in Autism?

Mental health difficulties, family and childhood adversity factors, substance use and conduct problems have all been linked to offending behaviour in the general population. However, no large-scale study with comparison groups has investigated these risk factors in relation to autistic offenders. The current research included 40 autistic offenders, 40 autistic non-offenders, 40 typically developed (TD) offenders and 39 TD non-offenders. Conduct problems risk factors differentiated autistic offenders from both non-offender groups (autistic and TD) and mental health risk factors differentiated a

Possibilities for interprofessional learning at a Swedish acute healthcare ward not dedicated to interprofessional education: an ethnographic study.

OBJECTIVES: Almost all healthcare today is team-based in collaboration over professional borders, and numerous students have work-based learning in such contexts. However, interprofessional learning (IPL) in clinical settings has mostly been systematically explored in specially designed contexts dedicated to interprofessional education (IPE). This study aimed to explore the possibilities for IPL activities, and if or how they occur, in an acute ward context not dedicated to IPE. DESIGN AND SETTING: Between 2011 and 2013 ethnographic observations were performed of medical and nursing students'

Prevalence and patterns of antipsychotic use and their associations with mental health and problem behaviours among older adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: There are concerns that antipsychotics may be used inappropriately in adults with intellectual disability for problem behaviours in the absence of a diagnosed mental health condition. The aim was to examine the prevalence and patterns of antipsychotic use and their association with problem behaviours and mental health conditions in older adults with intellectual disability. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were drawn from Wave 2 (2013/2014) of the Intellectual Disability Supplement to the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (IDS-TILDA). Medication data were available for 95.6% (n = 67

Early Caregiver-Child Interaction and Children's Development: Lessons from the St. Petersburg-USA Orphanage Intervention Research Project.

We review a series of interrelated studies on the development of children residing in institutions (i.e., orphanages) in the Russian Federation or placed with families in the USA and the Russian Federation. These studies rely on a single population, and many potential parameters that typically vary in the literature are similar across studies. The conceptual focus is on the role of early caregiver-child interactions and environmental factors that influence those interactions in children's development. Generally, children residing in institutions that provided minimal caregiver-child interactio

ADHD in children and young people: prevalence, care pathways, and service provision.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common childhood behavioural disorder. Systematic reviews indicate that the community prevalence globally is between 2% and 7%, with an average of around 5%. At least a further 5% of children have substantial difficulties with overactivity, inattention, and impulsivity that are just under the threshold to meet full diagnostic criteria for ADHD. Estimates of the administrative prevalence (clinically diagnosed or recorded) vary worldwide, and have been increasing over time. However, ADHD is still relatively under-recognised and underdiagnosed

Correlates of Somatic Symptoms Among African American Males Transitioning From a Public System of Care.

Exploration of somatic symptoms and their correlates among adolescent and young adult African American males are limited in the empirical literature. In the current study, correlates of somatic symptoms among African American males ( n = 74) transitioning from a public system of care, namely, foster care, was explored. Potential correlates assessed included indicators of child maltreatment, approach and avoidance coping strategies, as well as the following emotional and behavioral problems: oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, major depressive disorder, and attention-deficit hypera

Use of Antipsychotic Medications for Nonpsychotic Children: Risks and Implications for Mental Health Services.

Antipsychotic medications, especially second-generation antipsychotics, have increasingly been prescribed to children under age 18 in the United States. They are approved to treat pediatric bipolar and psychotic disorders and aggressive behaviors among patients with autism, but they are often used off label to control disruptive behaviors of children without autism and treat mood problems of children without bipolar disorder. The most vulnerable children, such as those in foster care, are the most likely recipients. Common known risks are potentially serious, and suspected long-term developmen

Sleep mediates the link between resiliency and behavioural problems in children at high and low risk for alcoholism.

Children of alcoholic parents are at greater risk for developing substance use problems. Having a parent with any mental illness increases the risk for sleep disorders in children. Using actigraphy, this study characterized sleep in children of alcoholics and community controls over a period of 1 week. This study further examined whether sleep characteristics of the children mediated the relationship between self-regulation indices (i.e. undercontrol and resiliency) and outcome measures of function (e.g. problem behaviours and perceived conflict at home). Eighty-two children (53 boys, 29 girls

Positive family relationships: Longitudinal network of relations.

The construct of positive family relationships (PFR), defined as family members getting along well and supporting each other, was investigated in a long-term prospective study. A newly constructed scale of positive family relationships developed using the nominal response model of item-response theory, was subject to a longitudinal network of relations analysis. The conceptualization for this research was founded on a positive psychology framework. Data derived from the Fullerton Longitudinal Study and spanned 20 years from middle childhood (age 9 years) to early adulthood (age 29 years). Evid

8p23.1 Interstitial Deletion in a Patient with Congenital Cardiopathy, Neurobehavioral Disorders, and Minor Signs Suggesting 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

Copy number variation studies of known disorders have the potential to improve the characterization of clinical phenotypes and may help identifying candidate genes and their pathways. The authors described a child with congenital heart disease, microcephaly, facial dysmorphisms, developmental delay, learning difficulties, and behavioral problems. There was initially a clinical suspicion of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2 DS), but molecular cytogenetic analysis (array genomic hybridization [aGH]) showed the presence of a de novo 3.6-Mb interstitial microdeletion in 8p23.1. The main features

Private speech use in arithmetical calculation: relationship with phonological memory skills in children with and without mathematical difficulties.

The majority of recent studies conclude that children's private speech development (private speech internalisation) is important for mathematical development and subject to disabling. The main concern of the present study was whether or not the two phonological memory factors evaluated in the study (i.e. the results of children's digit span assessments, both forward and backward) relates to private speech internalisation and whether this relationship changes with children's age, or mathematical achievement levels, or both. We made comparisons between children with acknowledged mathematical dif

The effect of problem-based learning in patient education after an event of CORONARY heart disease--a randomised study in PRIMARY health care: design and methodology of the COR-PRIM study.

BACKGROUND: Even though there is convincing evidence that self-care, such as regular exercise and/or stopping smoking, alters the outcomes after an event of coronary heart disease (CHD), risk factors remain. Outcomes can improve if core components of secondary prevention programmes are structurally and pedagogically applied using adult learning principles e.g. problem-based learning (PBL). Until now, most education programs for patients with CHD have not been based on such principles. The basic aim is to discover whether PBL provided in primary health care (PHC) has long-term effects on empowe

Dysfunction of executive and related processes in childhood absence epilepsy.

The nature and extent of the neuropsychological difficulties associated with childhood absence epilepsy (CAE) remain unclear. Because aberrant thalamocortical rhythms have been implicated in the pathogenesis of CAE, it was hypothesized that children with CAE would show greater difficulties in neuropsychological domains that are thought to be subserved by basal ganglia-thalamocortical circuits. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to compare the neuropsychological functioning of 16 children with CAE with that of 14 children with type 1 diabetes mellitus and 15 healthy children. The CAE gr
