The past, present, and future of temporomandibular disorders in predoctoral curriculum: historical perspectives and what comes next.

Approximately one-third of adults in the United States are estimated to suffer from temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Despite the widespread prevalence, effective diagnosis and management of TMD remains inadequate, contributing to patient frustration and a sense of stigmatization by healthcare providers. To address this gap, significant attention is being directed toward improving educational initiatives at all levels regarding TMD. This perspective aims to explore the historical development, current standards, and emerging trends in TMD-related education in the U.S. and Canada. From its earl

Influential factors of benefit finding in hemodialysis patients: a qualitative study using the social-ecological model.

BACKGROUND: The ability to find benefits in adverse situations has been shown to foster a positive outlook and enhance quality of life among patients undergoing medical treatment. However, factors influencing benefit finding in hemodialysis patients remain underexplored from a multi-level perspective. This study explores the perspectives of hemodialysis patients regarding the factors influencing benefit finding, framed within the social-ecological model. METHODS: This qualitative study is part of a longitudinal mixed-methods project that was conducted between June and December of 2023 across f

Ethical decision-making under stress: the role of the nonreactive facet of mindfulness.

Business students commonly experience high levels of stress, often facing a variety of ethical challenges throughout their education experiences and well into their professional lives. Complicating matters, past research shows that such stress may compromise the processes associated with individual ethical decision-making (EDM). Some research indicates that individual differences, namely mindfulness, can benefit EDM. However, few if any studies have considered how mindfulness may mitigate adverse effects of stress on EDM. Many models of the EDM process have assumed a primary role for cognitive

How to calculate the dosage and infusion rate for administration of intravenous medicines.

The administration of intravenous (IV) medicines, including calculating the required dosage and infusion rate, is a fundamental nursing proficiency. Mistakes in IV medicine dose and infusion rate calculations are a significant factor in medication errors, so it is essential that nurses, and other healthcare professionals who undertake this task, can make these calculations accurately. Nurses undertaking IV drug calculations must have the knowledge and skills required to do so safely and accurately and must work within their level of competence. • IV administration of medicines (which includes

Interventional nephrology in Italy: Past achievements, present challenges, and future directions.

Interventional nephrology has progressively emerged as a discipline aimed at integrating clinical management with procedural expertise in the care of patients with kidney disease. Historically, Italy has represented one of the leading international models in the management of dialysis access and ultrasound-guided procedures, largely due to the direct procedural involvement of nephrologists. This narrative review examines the historical evolution, status, and future perspectives of interventional nephrology in Italy. Early national surveys and data from the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patter

Integrating social and neurobehavioral understandings of epilepsy stigma into personalized care strategies.

There is a bidirectional relationship between epilepsy-related stigma (ERS) and medical outcomes. ERS negatively influences treatment adherence and disease management, whereas insufficient medical improvement can, in turn, exacerbate ERS. ERS remains a significant challenge, often leading to delays in diagnosis, limiting appropriate therapies, and creating difficulties in social integration for patients with epilepsy. Even when treatment successfully achieves seizure cessation, failure to address ERS can limit patient social integration, reduce quality of life, and hamper long-term psychosocia

Symptomatic heterozygous Gitelman syndrome in a professional baseball player: a case report.

Gitelman syndrome (GS) is an inherited renal salt wasting tubulopathy caused by variants in SLC12A3 and classically associated with hypokalemic metabolic alkalosis, hypomagnesemia, and hypocalciuria. We describe an 18-year-old professional baseball player with an approximately 6-month history of recurrent, exertional muscle cramping, fatigue, and profuse sweating that persisted despite hydration and commercial electrolyte supplementation. Laboratory evaluation demonstrated blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels of 24-27 mg/dL, creatinine levels of 1.20-1.38 mg/dL, bicarbonate of 29-31 mmol/L, and 24

3D-Printing in Neurosurgical Training: Hands-On Practice, Patient-Specific Planning and Simulation.

Training in neurosurgery is increasingly challenged by the complexity of cranial anatomy, the rarity of certain pathologies, ethical constraints on cadaveric dissection, and limited operative exposure. Advances in three-dimensional (3D) printing have enabled the development of patient-specific anatomical models derived from computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, offering realistic, reproducible platforms for surgical training and preoperative planning. This chapter reviews contemporary applications of 3D-printed, hybrid, and multimodal simulation models in neurosurgical education,

Strengthening Disability Inclusion in Medical Education: The Role of Disability Resource Professionals Through Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Framework.

In this article, the authors examine the important yet often overlooked role of specialized disability resource professionals (DRPs) in medical education. Although disability inclusion has gained momentum, disparities in accommodations, learning environments, and residency selection persist for medical students with disabilities (MSWDs). Despite national calls for institutional commitment to accessibility, only 9% of U.S. medical schools employ a dedicated DRP, leaving many MSWDs without specialized support to navigate the complexities of medical training. The authors argue that DRPs are essen

Perceptions of physiotherapists regarding challenges experienced by patients with Deafness in accessing rehabilitative care.

BACKGROUND: Hearing impairment, including deafness, affects approximately 5% of the global population, with the majority residing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as South Africa. Despite the constitutional right to healthcare for all, patients with deafness face persistent health inequalities because of communication barriers with healthcare professionals. Physiotherapists are often unprepared to provide care for patients with deafness, leading to a breakdown in communication and poor healthcare outcomes. OBJECTIVES: This study explored physiotherapists' perceptions regarding

Mechanisms of sustained mindfulness practice in stroke survivors: A critical realist secondary analysis of the HEADS: UP intervention.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Post-stroke anxiety and depression symptoms are common after stroke and can persist long-term. Despite this, there is a lack of long-term psychological support for post-stroke anxiety and depression. Mindfulness-based interventions are emerging as feasible, acceptable and potentially effective interventions for post-stroke anxiety and depression. Sustained use of mindfulness practice can help stroke survivors to self-manage their anxiety and depression in the long-term. However, stroke survivors' experiences of continued practice following a mindfulness-based interventi
