Amebiasis at an evacuation site on the Thai-Cambodian border.

Symptomatic intestinal amebiasis was highly endemic among the Cambodians living at Green Hill, an evacuation site on the Thai-Cambodian border between June 1987 through May 1989. Monthly incidence rates of intestinal amebiasis were determined to be inversely proportional to cumulative monthly rainfall. The highest incidence of amebic dysentery was 63/1000 in children 12-23 months old. Behavioral risk factors were investigated by conducting a case-control study. A questionnaire was administered to 73 families, each having at least one member with confirmed intestinal amebiasis within the past 3

Self-reported reproductive morbidity and healthcare-seeking practices of adolescent girls in migrant Rohingya community in Bangladesh.

It is crucial to address the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) disparity of adolescent girls for better health outcomes and quality of life, particularly in humanitarian crises. Adolescent girls in the Rohingya refugee camp are particularly vulnerable to various health morbidities related to SRH. The study aims to assess the reproductive health morbidity and healthcare-seeking practices of adolescent girls in the Rohingya community. A total of 406 Rohingya adolescent girls in Ukhiya, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, were interviewed to collect relevant information. The respondents were asked to rep

Does Trauma Change the Way Individuals with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Deal with Positive Stimuli?

INTRODUCTION: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a highly prevalent disorder and a highly debilitating condition. Although current theories focused on depressed mood and intrusion as critical dimensions, the mechanism through which depression increases the risk of PTSD remains unclear. Research usually concentrates on the hyperactive negative valence system (NVS) (e.g., increased fear and threat responses), but some evidence suggests a significant role for the hypoactive positive valence system (PVS) (e.g., less neural activation towards rewards). METHOD: The main aim of the present res

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Interventions Targeted to Parents for Improving the Oral Health of Children from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Backgrounds.

A high prevalence of dental caries is a significant health problem, especially in the pediatric population. Low-income minority groups, including the refugee and immigrant populations, are at higher risk of compromised oral health. It has been suggested that migrant parents do not have enough understanding of oral health, risk factors associated with dental caries, or the progress of dental decay. This systematic review aims to study quantitative literature on oral health interventions, health promotion programs, or behaviour change interventions targeting the parents/ caregivers of culturally

Evaluation of the national AIDS program and HIV/AIDS surveillance system in Jordan.

INTRODUCTION: The National AIDS Program in Jordan has faced numerous challenges, including insufficient funding, limited resources, and complexities brought on by refugee influxes. The absence of a reliable HIV/AIDS surveillance system further complicates tracking and responding to the epidemic. This study aimed to evaluate the performance and functionality of the National AIDS Program and the HIV/AIDS surveillance system. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted to evaluate the National AIDS Program and the HIV/AIDS Surveillance System in Jordan. The study involved 14 key informants specia

Defining the determinants of vaccine uptake and undervaccination in migrant populations in Europe to improve routine and COVID-19 vaccine uptake: a systematic review.

Understanding why some migrants in Europe are at risk of underimmunisation and show lower vaccination uptake for routine and COVID-19 vaccines is critical if we are to address vaccination inequities and meet the goals of WHO's new Immunisation Agenda 2030. We did a systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42020219214) exploring barriers and facilitators of vaccine uptake (categorised using the 5As taxonomy: access, awareness, affordability, acceptance, activation) and sociodemographic determinants of undervaccination among migrants in the EU and European Economic Area, the UK, and Switzerland. We searc

Antioxidant, Cytotoxic, and Antibacterial Activities of the Selected Tibetan Formulations Used in Gandaki Province, Nepal.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: An open-ended and semistructured questionnaire was used for an ethnomedicinal survey of the Tibetan formulations practiced in four Tibetan refugee settlements in Gandaki Province, Nepal. Based on the ethnomedicinal survey data, commonly used nine formulations were selected (Aru-18, Basam, Dadue, Dashel, Mutik-25, Raab Ga Yangzin Tea, Serdok-11, Sugmel-10, and Yungwa-4) to test biological activities. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. The cytotoxicity was examined by using the Allium cepa L. root t

Interferon-Gamma Release Assay Testing in Children Younger Than 2 Years in a US-Based Health System.

BACKGROUND: Use of interferon-gamma releasing assays (IGRAs) in children <2 years old may derive many of the same advantages, which have led to preference over tuberculin skin test (TST) in older children, but data are limited. Since 2011, we have tested children <2 years old with Quantiferon-TB Gold/Gold Plus (QFT)) in select clinical scenarios at Denver Health, a health system encompassing a TB clinic, refugee and immigrant screening and primary care. METHODS: We identified patients <2 years old tested with QFT between February, 2011 and August, 2019. The primary outcome measure was inciden

Outcomes of the Deployment of the Auto-Visual Acute Flaccid Paralysis Detection and Reporting (AVADAR) System for Strengthening Polio Surveillance in Africa From 2017 to 2018: Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: As we move toward a polio-free world, the challenge for the polio program is to create an unrelenting focus on smaller areas where the virus is still present, where children are being repeatedly missed, where immunity levels are low, and where surveillance is weak. OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to describe a possible solution to address weak surveillance systems and document the outcomes of the deployment of the Auto-Visual Acute Flaccid Paralysis Detection and Reporting (AVADAR) project. METHODS: This intervention was implemented in 99 targeted high-risk districts with concerns

Hepatitis B prevalence and risk factors for HBsAg carriage amongst Somali households in Liverpool.

The prevalence of hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) and surface antigen (HBsAg) in the Somali population in Liverpool is described and groups who may benefit from vaccination are identified. A cross-sectional descriptive study was undertaken. A total of 439 subjects, aged between 10 months and 80 years, from 151 households, were screened for anti-HBc and HBsAg. One hundred ninety-four (44.2%) were children aged less than 15 years. Three hundred and nine (69%) of enrolled subjects were born in Somalia, 122 (27.2%) were born in the UK and 8 were born elsewhere. Of the study population, 5.7% w

Submicroscopic malaria in pregnancy and associated adverse pregnancy events: A case-cohort study of 4,352 women on the Thailand-Myanmar border.

BACKGROUND: Malaria in pregnancy detected by microscopy is associated with maternal anaemia, reduced fetal growth, and preterm birth, but the effects of lower density (i.e., submicroscopic) malaria infections are poorly characterised. This analysis was undertaken to investigate associations between submicroscopic malaria at the first antenatal care (ANC) visit and these adverse pregnancy events on the Thailand-Myanmar border. METHODS: Blood samples taken from refugee and migrant pregnant women presenting for their first ANC visit were analysed retrospectively for malaria using ultrasensitive

Diagnostic pathways and delay among tuberculosis patients in Stockholm, Sweden: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Asylum seekers in Sweden are offered tuberculosis (TB) screening at a voluntary post-arrival health examination. The role of this screening in improving the TB diagnostic pathway has not been previously evaluated. The aim of this study was to determine diagnostic pathways for active TB cases and compare diagnostic delays between different pathways. METHODS: Retrospective review of medical records of patients reported with active TB in Stockholm in 2015, using a structured and pre-coded form. RESULTS: Seventy-one percent of patients actively sought health care due to symptoms. As

Screening for active and latent tuberculosis among asylum seekers in Italy: A retrospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization conditionally recommends systematic screening of tuberculosis (TB) and Latent Tuberculosis Infection (LTBI) among asylum seekers (AS) from high-burden countries, but the effectiveness of different screening approaches is controversial. METHODS: We report the results of a retrospective cohort analysis of TB and LTBI screening among consecutive AS in Brescia, Italy during 2015-2016. TB screening was based on symptoms, LTBI screening on the tuberculin skin test (TST). Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with screenin

Vaccination campaign at a temporary camp for victims of the earthquake in Lorca (Spain).

Outbreaks in temporary camps are an important risk for the health of the displaced population. The town of Lorca (Murcia, Spain) suffered 2 earthquakes on May 2011 that required the re-housing of 1,424 victims in a temporary camp. Following 4 cases of chickenpox control measures were adopted among the displaced population. These measures included vaccination against chickenpox; due to the existence of cases of measles in adjacent regions, it was decided to offer measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination as well. The immunization campaign was performed during 2 d (3 to 4 d after the first ca

[Cultural and migration aspects in functional abdominal pain].

Compared to Europe's mean immigrant contingent of 7.3 to 8.6 % Switzerland holds the highest contingent of foreign population with 23.5 %. Therefore it is of utmost importance that physicians have a knowledge of the specific characteristics of immigrant patients. The influence of personality factors (experience, behavior) is not independent from the influence of culturally-related environmental factors (regional differences in diet, pollutants, meanings, etc.). In addition, different cultural groups rate their quality of life differently. Psychological reasons for recurrent abdominal pain are

Rape, torture, and traumatization of Bosnian and Croatian women: psychological sequelae.

The first 25 Bosnian women admitted to the Zagreb Obstetrics and Gynaecological Clinic or its associated regional psychiatric centers were assessed using both clinical and post-traumatic stress disorder interviews. Most of the women had been multiply traumatized; all had been repeatedly raped. Psychological status was assessed for those women who were not impregnated, for those impregnated who received abortions, and for those impregnated who carried the fetus to term.
