Helminths of sheep and goats in desert areas of south-west Mauritania (Trarza).

Faecal samples were obtained from sheep and goats before, during and after the rainy season at three locations in south-west Mauritania. Several animals were also necropsied at the same time. Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent worm. Infection by digestive-tract strongyles and Strongyloides papillosus was always very light (prevalence less than 20%). Sheep were more heavily infected than goats but animals under 1 year of age were not infected by digestive-tract strongyles. It is likely that young small ruminants became infected during the rainy season and that the parasites so acquired

[HTLV1 and coinfections].

After reminding the epidemiology of the HTLV1 infection the authors sum up the actually recommended diagnosis procedure. --Case finding by ELISA, confirmation by WESTERN-BLOT and/or RIPA (anti-gag and anti-env specificities), or even PCR which makes specific diagnosis of HTLV1/2. --Or if possible directly by PCR which has helped some authors to find provirus in seronegative people. Coinfections caused by HIV and by Strongyloides are the best documented. As a rule, HTLV1 seems to have rather a worsening effect on evolutiveness and on seriousness of the clinical picture caused by mixed infection

[Iron deficiency in an area of Bolivia and high prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis].

Between November and December 1987, 201 subjects from three communities of the Cordillera Province, Santa Cruz Department, South-East Bolivia (Camiri, Boyuibe, and Gutierrez) were examined for serum iron levels. Sixty-three (31.3%) were iron deficient. There were no significant differences between males and females (37.2% and 26.9%, respectively) and among the three localities studied. Iron deficiency was highest in the 3- to 9-year-old age group and lowest in the 30- to 39-year-old group. Considering the prevalence in the same localities of infections by hookworms, Trichuris trichiura, Strong

Impaired natural defence of beige (Chediak-Higashi syndrome) mice against tissue-migrating larvae of Strongyloides ratti and its reconstitution by bone marrow cells.

The susceptibility of C57BL/6-bgJ/bgJ mice, which exhibit a murine counterpart of the Chediak-Higashi syndrome, to infection with Strongyloides ratti was examined. After a primary infection, the peak of the daily larval output in faeces (LPG) of bgJ/bgJ mice was approximately twice as high as that of their littermate bgJ/+mice. The total number of tissue migrating larvae recovered from bgJ/bgJ mice at 36 h after infection was also approximately twice as high as that from bgJ/+mice. However, after a primary infection, bgJ/bgJ mice could completely expel adult worms in the intestine by day 14. W

Immunisation of mice against Strongyloides ratti.

Experimental infections of C57Bl/6 mice with strongyloides ratti produced marked resistance to challenge. Resistance to reinfection was induced by as few as six filariform larvae. The degree of resistance produced by soluble somatic antigens prepared from filariform larvae of S. ratti was comparable to that seen after a primary infection. The addition of Freund's adjuvants to the antigen did not increase resistance significantly. Intraperitoneal implantation of micropore chambers containing filariform larvae failed to induce resistance to reinfection. Considerable resistance to a challenge inf

Resistance mesenteric arteries display hypercontractility in the resolution time of Strongyloides venezuelensis infection.

The blood flow in the mesenteric region is crucial for nutrient absorption and immune response in the gastrointestinal tract. The presence of nematodes or their excreted/secreted products seems to provoke vascular dysfunction. However, it is unclear whether and how the intestinal nematodes with habitat in the intestinal niche could affect the mesenteric vascular resistance. In this study, male Wistar rats were infected with 2000 larvae of S. venezuelensis, and experiments were conducted at 0 (non-infected control), 10 or 30 days post-infection (DPI). Eggs were counted in rats' feces and adult

Eosinophils and Neutrophils Eliminate Migrating Strongyloides ratti Larvae at the Site of Infection in the Context of Extracellular DNA Trap Formation.

Parasitic nematodes such as hookworms actively penetrate the skin of their hosts, encountering skin-resident innate immune cells that represent the host´s first line of defense. Here we use Strongyloides ratti as a model for an intestinal helminth parasite with tissue migrating stages. We show that interception and killing of migrating larvae in mice during a 1st infection occurred predominantly in skin and muscle tissue before larvae migrated via lung and head tissue to the intestine. Inhibition of larval migration was even more efficient in immune mice during a 2nd infection where larvae bar

An optimized agar plate culture improves diagnostic efficiency for Strongyloides stercoralis infection in an endemic community.

We aimed to compare the efficacy of modified agar plate fecal culture (mAPC) and standard agar plate culture (sAPC) for diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in a community at Khon Kaen Province, Thailand. Fecal samples were collected from participants individually (n = 1076) and were tested using these two methods. Modified APC and sAPC detected 129 (11.99%) and 91 (8.46%) infected individuals, respectively. Thirty-eight participants were negative according to sAPC, but positive for mAPC. Moreover, in the participants who were positive for both methods, the number of worm developme

Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection and other soil-transmitted helminths by cross-sectional survey in a rural community in Gisagara District, Southern Province, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is one of the most neglected tropical diseases. Sparse, dated central African and Rwandan data on seroprevalence are available to guide public health efforts and clinical care. METHODS: In February 2016 we conducted a community-based cross-sectional study among 539 asymptomatic participants in a rural area in the Gisagara District, Southern Province, Rwanda. Direct faecal smear (DFS) and modified Koga agar plate culture (APC) were used to detect S. stercoralis infection in a single stool sample. Data on other soil-transmitted helminths diagnosed by DFS we

Health aspects of the pre-departure phase of migration.

In the second article in a six-part PLoS Medicine series on Migration & Health, Brian Gushulak and Douglas MacPherson discuss the pre-departure phase of migration and the specific health risks and policy needs associated with this phase.

Genetic characterization of Strongyloides spp. from captive, semi-captive and wild Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) in Central and East Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia.

Orangutans (Pongo spp.), Asia's only great apes, are threatened in their survival due to habitat loss, hunting and infections. Nematodes of the genus Strongyloides may represent a severe cause of death in wild and captive individuals. In order to better understand which Strongyloides species/subspecies infect orangutans under different conditions, larvae were isolated from fecal material collected in Indonesia from 9 captive, 2 semi-captive and 9 wild individuals, 18 captive groups of Bornean orangutans and from 1 human working with wild orangutans. Genotyping was done at the genomic rDNA locu

A case report of pulmonary coinfection of Strongyloides stercoralis and Pneumocystis jiroveci.

A case of pulmonary coinfection by Strongyloides stercoralis and Pneumocystis jiroveci has been detected in an AIDS patient treated in the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit of the Muñiz Hospital. At diagnosis, the patient presented cough with mucopurulent expectoration, dyspnea, fever, bilateral pulmonary infiltrates on the chest X-ray, negative bacilloscopy for acid fast bacteria and a CD4(+) T lymphocytes count of 52 cells/µL. The microbiological diagnosis was achieved by microscopic observation of the respiratory secretions obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage, while the wet mount examination r
