OBJECTIVES: The vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has shed new light on vestibular testing. A large negative deflection with a 3-ms latency within the auditory brainstem response (ABR) has been reported in some patients with deafness. This negative deflection has been termed the N3 potential and it is assumed to be a vestibular-evoked potential. This study investigated the relationship between the VEMP and the N3 potential.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective evaluation of the VEMP and the N3 potential in 21 patients.
METHODS: The oto-neurological tests, including caloric test, hearing sensi

UNLABELLED: Opioid peptides have been detected in the auditory and vestibular efferent neurons where they colocalize with the major neurotransmitter, acetylcholine. We investigated the function of opioids to modulate neurotransmission mediated by hair cell's alpha9/alpha10-containing nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (alpha9/alpha10nAChRs). The endogenous opioid peptides, endomorphin-1 (mu agonist) and dynorphin B (kappa agonist), but not a delta agonist [D-Pen2,D-Pen-5]enkephalin, inhibited the acetylcholine-evoked currents in frog saccular hair cells and rat inner hair cells. This inhibition

PURPOSE: When a dizzy patient with episodic vertigo has an abnormal caloric and a normal video head impulse test (vHIT), this caloric-vHIT dissociation provides vital information for a diagnosis of Ménière's disease (MD). Endolymphatic hydrops (EH), a histological marker of MD, is hypothesized to be involved in the caloric-vHIT dissociation in MD through hydropic duct distension of the horizontal semicircular canal (SC). This study was designed to determine the impact of EH on the function of horizontal SC during caloric stimulation.
METHODS: Caloric test and vHIT were used to evaluate the fu

BACKGROUND: Sensory experience is the basis for learning in infancy. In older children, abnormal sensory reactivity is associated with behavioural and developmental disorders. We hypothesised that in preterm infants, abnormal sensory reactivity during infancy would be associated with perinatal characteristics and correlate with 2-year neurodevelopmental outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study of infants with birth weight ≤1500 g using the Test of Sensory Function in Infants (TSFI) in the first year. Infants with gestational age ≤30 weeks were tested with the Bayley S

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study describes the phenotype associated with the single most common cause of genetic hearing loss. The frequency of childhood deafness is estimated at 1/500. Half of this hearing loss is genetic and approximately 80% of genetic hearing loss is nonsyndromic and inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Approximately 50% of childhood nonsyndromic recessive hearing loss is caused by mutations in the connexin 26 (Cx26) gene (GJB2/DFNB1), making it the most common form of autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss with a carrier rate estimated to be as high as 2.

Cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) is a recently recognized neurodegenerative ganglionopathy. Prompted by the presence of symptomatic postural hypotension in two patients with CANVAS, we hypothesized that autonomic dysfunction may be an associated feature of the syndrome. We assessed symptoms of autonomic dysfunction and performed autonomic nervous system testing among 26 patients from New Zealand. After excluding three patients with diabetes mellitus, 83% had evidence of autonomic dysfunction; all patients had at least one autonomic symptom and 91% had mo

This study addressed the hypothesis that the vestibular or lethal toxicities of allylnitrile depend on CYP2E1-mediated bioactivation. Wild-type (129S1) and CYP2E1-null male mice were exposed to allylnitrile at doses of 0, 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0 mmol/kg (po), following exposure to drinking water with 0 or 1% acetone, which induces CYP2E1 expression. Induction of CYP2E1 activity by acetone in 129S1 mice and lack of activity in null mice was confirmed in liver microsomes. Vestibular toxicity was assessed using a behavioral test battery and illustrated by scanning electron microscopy observation of the

Millions of patients and their caretakers live and deal with the devastating consequences of spinal cord injury (SCI) worldwide. Despite outstanding advances in the field to both understand and tackle these pathologies, a cure for SCI patients, with their peculiar characteristics, is still a mirage. One of the most promising therapeutic strategies to date for these patients involves the use of epidural electrical stimulation. In this context, electrically active materials such as graphene and its derivates become particularly interesting. Indeed, solid evidence of their capacity to closely int

With aging, compensatory mechanisms and physiological reserve may become insufficient to maintain balance and gait (BG), particularly when associated with stroke, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, osteoarticular diease, vestibular disorders, orthostatic hypotension (OH), heart rhythm disorders, or drug side effects. This leads to poorer postural-motor function and increased risk of falling (RoF). This review aims to highlight recent scientific advancements relative to BG disorders (BGDs) for gerontology professionals. When assessing older adults (OAs) with BGDs, a thorough assessment of patient h

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injuries are of concern to the sports and military communities because of the age of the participants and costly burden to society. To markedly reduce the impact of traumatic brain injury and its sequela (TBI-S), it is necessary to determine the initial vulnerability of individuals as well as identify new technologies that indicate early signs of TBI-S.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Currently, diverse methods have been used by the authors and others in laboratory settings to reveal early signs of persistent TBI-S including simulation modeling of the effect of rapid dece

Objective: Hearing abnormalities frequently occur in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infected individuals. Both conductive and uni- or bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) have been described along with other audiological and vestibular symptoms such as tinnitus, vertigo and balance disturbances. While frequent middle ear infections may explain impairment of peripheral hearing abilities, the exact etiology of cochlear, and central auditory processing deficits still remains unclear. Direct effects of HIV, opportunistic infections, ototoxic side effects of antiretroviral therapy (ART),

OBJECTIVE: While the clinical presentations of COVID-19 and concussion are not identical, there is a significant overlap in symptomology (e.g., fatigue, headache) and neurological deficits (e.g., cognitive, vestibular). However, limited research has examined the effect of prior COVID-19 diagnosis on concussion outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine if prior diagnosis of COVID-19 influences concussion outcomes, including concussion assessment scores and recovery time, in college-aged individuals.
METHODS: A prospective study of college-aged individuals (COVID-19: n = 4

CONCLUSIONS: The results of this preliminary study demonstrate that with regard to determining the efficacy of intratympanic (IT) gentamicin treatment in patients with Meniere's disease, the reliability of testing for vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) is comparable to that of caloric tests. Compared with caloric tests, VEMP measurements are more comfortable and take less time. The results of VEMP and caloric testing do not correlate with the results of hearing tests.
OBJECTIVE: To test the reliability of VEMP testing to monitor the results of IT gentamicin therapy in patients with

BACKGROUND: Due to the synergic role of the facial nerve and the nervus intermedius in the mechanical protection of the eye and taste, vestibular schwannomas and/or their treatment may prove to be dangerous for the visual function and taste. Our goal was to evaluate and compare the impact of the tumor itself and the impact of microsurgery (MS) or Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A functional questionnaire evaluating, among other items, patient complaints related to the eye and taste has been given out to a series of 200 patients 3 years after the GKS of a unilateral vest

Background and Objectives: Vision uses about half of the pathways within the brain, and these anatomical structures are susceptible to injury in concussion. Authors have suggested that subconcussive head impacts, common in soccer, may disrupt visual function. The following study aimed to explore and compare quantitative pupillometry and Vestibular Ocular Motor Screening (VOMS) in female soccer athletes. Materials and Methods: Twenty-six Division 1 female soccer athletes (20.46 ± 2.36 years) received baseline quantitative pupillometry and VOMS measurements. Results: Of the 26 tested athletes, 3

Audiovestibular dysfunction in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus has been underestimated for decades. Systemic lupus erythematosus can affect both the auditory and vestibular systems simultaneously. Several potential pathophysiological mechanisms behind systemic lupus erythematosus-related audiovestibular dysfunction have been proposed, including antibody-mediated immune responses, cell-mediated cytotoxicity, immune complex deposition in microvessels, central involvement in the audiovestibular pathway, and ototoxicity from medications used in systemic lupus erythematosus treatment.
