The Effect of Different Self-Administered Tongue Exercises on Tongue Strength and Endurance in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Self-administered tongue exercises (TEs) are proposed as an effective, low-cost and convenient intervention for improving maximum tongue strength and endurance. However, age-related factors make self-administered TEs more challenging for older individuals. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of self-administered TEs on maximum tongue strength and endurance in older individuals. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-two healthy volunteers, both young and older groups, were randomly allocated to three self-administered TE groups: tongue wrap, tongue corner and tongue paint.

Evaluating the sustained effectiveness of a novel pharmacy-based intervention to reduce older adult misuse of over-the-counter medications: A case for non-significance.

INTRODUCTION: Misuse of over-the-counter (OTC) medications by older adults (age 65+) can comprise Drug-Age, Drug-Drug, Drug-Disease, and Drug-Label types. Pharmacies in the United States are prevalent sources of OTCs and are an apt setting to address OTC misuse. Senior Safe™ is a pharmacy-system redesign for preventing older adult OTC misuse. The redesign uses signage to designate high-risk OTCs and safer products for older adult use, as well as prompting older adults to engage with pharmacy staff around medication safety issue. OBJECTIVES: This study compared misuse in pharmacies with initia

The Evolving Role of Neuroimaging in Traumatic Brain Injury Research.

Neuroimaging technologies such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been widely adopted in the clinical diagnosis and management of traumatic brain injury (TBI), particularly at the more acute and severe levels of injury. Additionally, a number of advanced applications of MRI have been employed in TBI-related clinical research with great promise, and researchers have used these techniques to better understand the underlying mechanisms, progression of secondary injury and tissue perturbation over time, and relation of focal and diffuse injury to outcome. However, the

Preventing the transition from acute to chronic low back pain using home-based neuromodulation: protocol for a randomised, controlled study.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is among the world's leading causes of disability and declines in quality of life. Despite considerable financial and research investment, current interventions demonstrate only modest success or are associated with deleterious side effects. Furthermore, most treatment efforts are directed towards LBP that has already become chronic, rather than interventions capable of preventing pain chronicity in the first instance. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a portable and cost-effective form of non-invasive brain stimulation, presents a potent

FallFitness exercise program provided using the train-the-trainer approach for community-dwelling older adults: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Falls and fall-related injuries remain a global challenge and threat to the health of older adults. Specific strength and balance exercises are effective in preventing falls among community-dwelling older adults. Nevertheless, provision of evidence-based fall prevention interventions to a broad population represents a healthcare challenge, indicating that new models for promoting exercise among community-dwelling older adults need to be addressed. Here, we aimed to evaluate the effects of a peer-led group-based exercise intervention provided using the train-the-trainer approach and

The creation of a global neurotrauma registry.

The authors propose the generation of a multi-institutional TBI registry. Barriers to registry implementation include: (1) difficulties in acquiring ethical approval; (2) incomplete clinical data available; (3) lack of information and insufficient technology (IT) support; (4) limited available resources; (5) time constraints involving understaffing yet managing high patient volumes; (6) time constraints associated with entering patient data into the registry tool. The authors detail the current state of affairs on neurotrauma registries worldwide and propose the creation of a multi-institution

Long-Term Observation of Patients With Cancer - an Entity-Independent Registry for Healthcare and Translational Research at the University Medicine Dresden (Cancer-Reg-VT).

INTRODUCTION: Translational research is important, especially in medicine where decisions affect people's lives. Clinical registries and the studies embedded in them allow the depiction of actual care practice under routine conditions. Translating the findings of health services research back into clinical research through prospective cohort studies has the potential to drive medical innovations faster, more effectively and, above all, in a more targeted manner. These must therefore be a central component of cutting-edge oncological research. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the registry is the establis

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Technology Driven Modern Drug Discovery and Development.

The discovery and advances of medicines may be considered as the ultimate relevant translational science effort that adds to human invulnerability and happiness. But advancing a fresh medication is a quite convoluted, costly, and protracted operation, normally costing USD ~2.6 billion and consuming a mean time span of 12 years. Methods to cut back expenditure and hasten new drug discovery have prompted an arduous and compelling brainstorming exercise in the pharmaceutical industry. The engagement of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including the deep-learning (DL) component in particular, has bee

Effect of a novel hygiene intervention on older children's handwashing in a humanitarian setting in Kahda district, Somalia: A cluster-randomised controlled equivalence trial.

INTRODUCTION: Improving handwashing with soap (HWWS) among children in humanitarian emergencies has the potential to reduce the transmission of several important infectious diseases. However, there is limited evidence on which approaches are effective in increasing HWWS among children in humanitarian settings. One recent innovation - the "Surprise Soap" intervention - was shown to be successful in a small-scale efficacy trial in a humanitarian setting in Iraq. This intervention includes soap with embedded toys delivered through a short household session comprising a glitter game, instruction o

Cerebral oximetry monitoring versus usual care for extremely preterm infants: a study protocol for the 2-year follow-up of the SafeBoosC-III randomised clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: In the SafeBoosC-III trial, treatment guided by cerebral oximetry monitoring for the first 72 hours after birth did not reduce the incidence of death or severe brain injury in extremely preterm infants at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age, as compared with usual care. Despite an association between severe brain injury diagnosed in the neonatal period and later neurodevelopmental disability, this relationship is not always strong. The objective of the SafeBoosC-III follow-up study is to assess mortality, neurodevelopmental disability, or any harm in trial participants at 2 years of correc

Electroacupuncture versus sham electroacupuncture in the treatment of postoperative ileus after laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer: study protocol for a multicentre, randomised, sham-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Postoperative ileus (POI) is an inevitable complication of almost all abdominal surgeries, which results in prolonged hospitalisation and increased healthcare costs. Various treatment strategies have been developed for POI but with limited success. Electroacupuncture (EA) might be a potential therapy for POI. However, evidence from rigorous trials that evaluated the effectiveness of EA for POI is limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine whether EA can safely reduce the time to the first defecation after laparoscopic surgery in patients with POI. METHODS AND ANALYSIS:

Co-Administration of Iron and Bioavailable Curcumin Reduces Levels of Systemic Markers of Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in a Placebo-Controlled Randomised Study.

Ferrous sulphate (FS) is widely used as an iron supplement to treat iron deficiency (ID), but is known to induce inflammation causing gastric side-effects resulting in poor adherence to supplement regimens. Curcumin, a potent antioxidant, has been reported to suppress inflammation via down regulation of NF-κB. The aim of the present double blind, placebo-controlled randomised trial was to assess whether co-administration of FS with a formulated, bioavailable form of curcumin (HydroCurc™) could reduce systemic inflammation and/or gastrointestinal side-effects. This study recruited 155 healthy p

Face Your Fears: Virtual reality-based cognitive behavioral therapy (VR-CBT) versus standard CBT for paranoid ideations in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia spectrum disorders cause suffering for patients, relatives, and the surrounding society. Paranoid ideations, encompassing ideas of social reference and manifest persecutory delusions, are among the most frequent symptoms in this population and a cause of significant distress. Recent meta-analyses of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for psychosis show small to moderate effect sizes in reducing paranoid ideations. Virtual reality-based CBT (VR-CBT) could improve therapy efficacy as exposure and behavioral experiments in VR can be optimized, individualized, and carried

Evaluating the impact of culturally specific patient-centric behavioral intervention package versus usual care for tobacco cessation among patients attending noncommunicable disease clinics in North India: A single-blind trial pilot study protocol.

BACKGROUND: In a low and middle-income country (LMIC) like India, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) contribute a major proportion (61.8%) of all causes of death. Out of this, 48% of cardiovascular diseases , 23% of Chronic Respiratory Diseases , and 10% of Cancer deaths are attributable to tobacco use. Tobacco use is a major risk factor for NCDs and thus, the tobacco cessation approach is a high priority intervention to combat complications and death among NCD patients. While several interventions are available for tobacco cessation, in resource constraint countries like India, the effectivenes
