Postnatal quality of life, depressive symptoms, and social support among women in southern India.

Evaluation of postnatal quality of life (QOL) has remained a poorly researched area in India. The present cross-sectional study assessed postnatal QOL, using the Mother Generated Index (MGI) and its associated risk factors, and was conducted during January-March 2013 among 274 mothers, 6-8 weeks postnatally. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to evaluate sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics and social support. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and QOL using the MGI. The vast majority (90.1 percent) of respondents in our study had a pr

The Problem of Malnutrition Associated with Major Depressive Disorder from a Sex-Gender Perspective.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an incapacitating condition characterized by loss of interest, anhedonia and low mood, which affects almost 4% of people worldwide. With rising prevalence, it is considered a public health issue that affects economic productivity and heavily increases health costs alone or as a comorbidity for other pandemic non-communicable diseases (such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, inflammatory bowel diseases, etc.). What is even more noteworthy is the double number of women suffering from MDD compared to men. In fact, this sex-related ratio has been conte

Maternal childhood abuse and children's emotional-behavioral difficulties: Intergenerational transmission via birth outcomes and psychosocial health.

Understanding the mechanisms and psychosocial pathways potentially underlying the association between maternal childhood abuse exposure and poor child health and wellbeing is important to inform opportunities for support and intervention early in the period of becoming a parent. The aim of the study was to investigate whether adverse birth outcomes and psychosocial health issues (maternal depressive symptoms, exposure to intimate partner violence in the first postnatal year) are potential mechanisms underlying the association between maternal childhood abuse and children's emotional-behavioral

Fluoxetine impairs GABAergic signaling in hippocampal slices from neonatal rats.

Fluoxetine (Prozac), an antidepressant known to selectively inhibit serotonin reuptake, is widely used to treat mood disorders in women suffering from depression during pregnancy and postpartum period. Several lines of evidence suggest that this drug, which crosses the human placenta and is secreted into milk during lactation, exerts its action not only by interfering with serotoninergic but also with GABAergic transmission. GABA is known to play a crucial role in the construction of neuronal circuits early in postnatal development. The immature hippocampus is characterized by an early type of

Early maternal separation: a rodent model of depression and a prevailing human condition.

The early life of most mammals is spent in close contact with the mother, and for the neonate, early maternal separation is a traumatic event that, depending on various conditions, may shape its behavioral and neurochemical phenotype in adulthood. Studies on rodents demonstrated that a very brief separation followed by increased maternal care may positively affect the development of the offspring but that prolonged separation causes significant amounts of stress. The consequences of this stress (particularly the hyperreactivity of the HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis are expressed in

Evaluation of Group Therapy Intervention for Anxiety and Depression in the Postnatal Period.

OBJECTIVES: Effective interventions for the prevention and treatment of postnatal depression and anxiety are important for family functioning and infant development. Group psychotherapy is one such intervention used in the postnatal period. This evaluation tests the efficacy of an eight-week group psychotherapy on participants' symptoms of postnatal depression and anxiety. The study also reports on the addition of a sequential attachment-based parenting program on participants' symptoms of depression and anxiety. METHODS: The study setting was a child and family health service in New South Wa

Impact of delivery method on postnatal depression in Jordanian women: Insights from a cross-sectional survey.

ObjectivePostnatal depression is a common and serious mental health problem. Despite the existence of established risk factors for postnatal depression, the role of the mode of delivery in influencing its prevalence remains a topic of debate. This study investigated the potential association between postnatal depression and the mode of delivery, specifically comparing the prevalence of postnatal depression in women who had a vaginal delivery versus those who underwent either an emergency or elective cesarean section. This study aimed to explore how different modes of delivery affect the preval

Combining the Antenatal Risk Questionnaire and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale in Early Pregnancy in Danish Antenatal Care-A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

Pregnant women with a history of mental disorders, neglect, or low social support are at increased risk of mental health problems. It is crucial to identify psychosocial risk factors in early pregnancy to reduce the risk of short- and long-term health consequences for mother and child. The Antenatal Risk Questionnaire has been found acceptable as a psychosocial screening tool among pregnant women in Australia, but it has not been tested in a Scandinavian context. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of pregnant women when using the Antenatal Risk Questionnaire and the Edinburgh

Using animal models to study post-partum psychiatric disorders.

The post-partum period represents a time during which all maternal organisms undergo substantial plasticity in a wide variety of systems in order to ensure the well-being of the offspring. Although this time is generally associated with increased calmness and decreased stress responses, for a substantial subset of mothers, this period represents a time of particular risk for the onset of psychiatric disorders. Thus, post-partum anxiety, depression and, to a lesser extent, psychosis may develop, and not only affect the well-being of the mother but also place at risk the long-term health of the

[Delivery and coma: where is my child?].

In three cases of parturition by Caesarean during a coma (provoked by eclampsia for both of them), the resumption of the quotidian activities for the three women at the time of the return at home was comprised by disorder states and nocturnal psychomotor agitation. Investigation and psychological interviews are focused on the emptiness (of words, representations, sensibilities) which surrounded the parturition during the coma.

Postpartum Bleeding in Pregnant Women Receiving SSRIs/SNRIs: New Insights From a Descriptive Observational Study and an Analysis of Data from the FAERS Database.

PURPOSE: To date, the available data on the relationship between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or the serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) venlafaxine and postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) are conflicting and have not been extensively investigated, especially in terms of plasma drug concentrations. We performed data mining of antidepressant-induced PPH reported to the US Food and Drug Administration's Adverse Event Reporting System database, to assess the strength of the potential association between antidepressant pharmacotherapy and PPH in pregnant wo

Meta-analysis of the effects of prepartum dietary cation-anion difference on performance and health of dairy cows.

The objectives were to use meta-analytic methods to determine the effects of changes in dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) prepartum on productive performance and health of dairy cows. The literature was systematically reviewed, searching randomized experiments with transition cows that manipulated the prepartum DCAD or experiments with acidogenic diets in which dietary Ca, P, or Mg was manipulated. Forty-two experiments, including 134 treatment means and 1,803 cows, were included in the meta-analysis. Of those, 5 experiments with 15 treatment means reported responses for 151 nulliparous c
