Alcoholism and Strongyloides stercoralis: daily ethanol ingestion has a positive correlation with the frequency of Strongyloides larvae in the stools.

BACKGROUND: Significantly higher prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis has been reported in chronic alcoholic patients. The aim of this investigation was to report the prevalence of Strongyloides larvae in stools of chronic alcoholic patients with known daily ethanol intake. METHODS: From January 2001 through December 2003 the results of fecal examinations and the daily ethanol intake were retrieved from the records of 263 chronic alcoholic and from 590 non-alcoholic male patients that sought health care at the outpatients unit of the University Hospital C A Moraes. Alcoholic patients were

Hyperinfection by Strongyloides stercoralis probably associated with Rituximab in a patient with mantle cell lymphoma and hyper eosinophilia.

The first report to our knowledge, of hyperinfection by Strongyloides stercoralis (HS) and hypereosinophilia, associated to immune suppression by Rituximab (the only drug received for the last one year and 10 months), in a patient with mantle-cell lymphoma (MCL), is presented. The patient has a 3-year history of MCL, and developed two accesses of HS during 2008, including meningitis, pneumonia and presence of larvae of S. stercoralis in the lungs. We had a unique chance to look at cytotoxicity of filariform larvae in the expectoration after Ivermectin treatment, showing immobilization and deat

Plasmodium falciparum and helminth coinfection in a semi urban population of pregnant women in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections and malaria are widespread in the tropics. Recent studies suggest helminth infections may increase susceptibility to Plasmodium falciparum infection. If confirmed, this increased susceptibility could be particularly important during pregnancy-induced immunosuppression. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the geographical distribution of P. falciparum-helminth coinfection and the associations between P. falciparum infection and infection with various parasite species in pregnant women in Entebbe, Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted at baseline during a tr

Increased detection rate of Strongyloides stercoralis by repeated stool examinations using the agar plate culture method.

To clarify the efficacy of repeated stool examinations by the agar plate culture method for the detection of Strongyloides stercoralis infection, 4,071 stool samples collected from 2,406 patients > 50 years of age in Ryukyu University Hospital were examined. The cumulative detection rate of S. stercoralis infection was 4.7% (112/2,406). At the first, second, third, and beyond fourth examinations, the detection rates were 3.6% (86/2,406), 1.5% (12/786), 2.6% (10/392), and 2.0% (4/198), respectively. From these results, the cumulative detection rate was estimated to be 7.4% when three stool samp

Prevention of changes in airway function facilitates Strongyloides venezuelensis infection in rats.

Alterations in lung function and pulmonary symptoms have been described in patients infected with helminths with a lung cycle. We have previously shown that infection with the nematode Strongyloides venezuelensis induced a significant increase in airway hyperreactivity in infected rats. The aim of the present study was to test the hypothesis that bronchodilation during the lung phase of parasite migration would favor completion of the life cycle and infection indices. For this purpose, S. venezuelensis infected rats were treated with salbutamol during the first 48 h after the nematode infectio

DNA immunization with Na+-K+ ATPase (Sseat-6) induces protective immunity to larval Strongyloides stercoralis in mice.

Strongyloides stercoralis causes chronic asymptomatic infections which can be maintained in the human host for many decades. Identification and treatment of S. stercoralis-infected individuals is required because immunosuppression can lead to fatal hyperinfection. In this study, human immunoglobulin G (IgG) that had previously been shown to transfer protective immunity to mice was used to identify potential protective antigens. Three antigens or genes from S. stercoralis larvae were identified as tropomyosin (Sstmy-1), Na+-K+ ATPase (Sseat-6), and LEC-5 (Sslec-5). The genes were cloned into pl

Strongyloides venezuelensis: heparin-binding adhesion substances in immunologically damaged adult worms.

Immunologically damaged Strongyloides venezuelensis adult worms were examined for their mucosal invasion ability and secretion of heparin-binding adhesion substances. S. venezuelensis was expelled from male Wistar rats 4 to 5 weeks after infection. Four-week-old adult worms were smaller and had fewer eggs than 1-week-old adult worms. One-week-old, 4-week-old, and 5-week-old adult worms equally established in the recipient mouse intestine when surgically implanted. Adult worms of 4 and 5 weeks of age secreted adhesion substances as much as 1-week-old adult worms. There was no difference in the

Spatial and discrimination learning in rodents infected with the nematode Strongyloides ratti.

Recent work has shown that mice with subclinical parasitic infections suffer impaired spatial learning and memory, as assayed in an open-field water maze. Although the mechanism underlying this effect is not clear, the phenomenon has been reported following infection with both a protozoan parasite (Eimeria vermiformis) and a gastrointestinal nematode (Heligmosomoides polygyrus). In a variety of experiments, we examined the effects of a different gastrointestinal nematode, Strongyloides ratti, on the ability of rats and mice to learn a spatial or a discrimination task. Animals were tested at va

[Aseptic purulent meningitis in two patients co-infected by HTLV-1 and Strongyloides stercoralis].

Occurrence of anguilluliasis always progresses to hyperinfestation or disseminated anguilluliasis with severe clinical manifestations in carriers of HTLV-1. This prognosis is further illustrated by two new cases of non-septic purulent meningitis observed in two male patients from Guadalope. Ages were 61 and 64 years. In both cases examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) demonstrated pleiocytosis with more than 3000 cells (mostly polynuclear neutrophils) per mm3, protein content greater than 3 g/l, and low sugar level. No soluble germs or antigens were found in the CSF. In both patients Strong

Foal diarrhoea between 1991 and 1994 in the United Kingdom associated with Clostridium perfringens, rotavirus, Strongyloides westeri and Cryptosporidium spp.

A case control study of foal diarrhoea in the United Kingdom was carried out over a 3-year period. Clostridium perfringens was significantly associated with foal diarrhoea (Odds Ratio (OR) = 3.0), being isolated from 57% of 421 animals with diarrhoea but from only 27% of 223 healthy foals. Also, C. perfringens was significantly associated with fatal diarrhoea (OR = 4.5). About half of diarrhoea with a fatal outcome was attributable to this organism. The other pathogens significantly associated with diarrhoea were rotavirus (OR = 5.6), Cryptosporidium spp. (OR = 3.2) and the nematode Strongyloi

Defective mucosal immunity and normal systemic immunity of Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, to reinfection with Strongyloides venezuelensis.

The systemic and local protective activity of Mongolian gerbils was examined after re-infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis. Mongolian gerbils were unable to expel S. venezuelensis adult worms from the intestine for over ten weeks after a primary infection. Therefore, immune animals were prepared by treating with mebendazole four weeks after a primary infection and then they were challenged by different maturation stages of the parasite; subcutaneous inoculation with the infective larvae (L3) obtained by faecal culture, oral administration of L3 obtained from the lungs of rats three days

Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma: a clinico-pathologic study of twenty-six patients from Martinique.

Twenty-six cases of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) were identified between 1983 and 1991 in Martinique (French West Indies). There were 14 men and 12 women, all of mixed racial descent and born in Martinique. Their ages ranged from 23 to 95 years. The main clinical and laboratory features at initial presentation were peripheral lymphadenopathy (22 cases), hepatomegaly (11 cases), splenomegaly (10 cases), cutaneous lesions (12 cases), hypercalcemia (16 cases), refractory infection by Strongyloides stercoralis (12 cases), and pre-existing autoimmune disorders (4 cases). All patients had a

Age-related prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in Okinawa, Japan.

Age-prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection was studied in six areas of Okinawa, Japan. In all localities, most of the infected inhabitants were aged over 40 years of age and females were less infected than males. The peak prevalence was found in inhabitants in their fifties in high endemic groups and shifted to higher age in lower endemic groups. This age-prevalence pattern resembles more that of schistosome infections than that of other gastrointestinal helminthic infections.

[Study of Strongyloides stercoralis in the duodenal juice obtained by the examination of a string capsule or the Enterotest].

We present our experience in the investigation of Strongyloides stercoralis in the duodenal juice obtained by the "string capsule" o Enterotest, in 1,511 patients from the Gastroenterology Service of the National Hospital "Edgardo Rebagliati Martins" IPSS, between January 1985 to July 1990. We found 36 patients parasitized with Strongyloides stercoralis, an incidence of 2.4%. This method was good tolerated and have proved to be simple, fast, effective and allowing to examine simultaneously many patients at a very low cost.

Immunological aspects of murine infection with the rat nematode Strongyloides ratti Sandground, 1925.

In a study of the immune response of the rat to infection with the nematode Strongyloidis ratti, the antigens of the infective larval stage (L3) and of the parasitic, parthenogenetic female (Fp) were investigated. From both the larvae and the adult females, one metabolic (exoantigen) and two somatic antigens were extracted. Of the two somatic antigens, one was soluble and obtainable by physical means while the other was separated by chemical means from the tegument of the parasite. Humoral responses to the various antigens were evaluated by immunodiffusion and ELISA techniques, while the overa
