Association between Life's Crucial 9 and bowel health among US adults: a cross-sectional analysis of NHANES 2005-2010 with external validation.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal bowel health, including constipation and diarrhea, is common in the general population. The American Heart Association recently introduced Life's Essential 8 (LE8) as a framework for assessing cardiovascular health (CVH). Building on this, Life's Crucial 9 (LC9) was developed by adding psychological health as a ninth component, providing a more holistic measure of overall health. Our objective was to investigate whether LC9 is linked to bowel health. To our knowledge, this is the first study to examine the association between LC9 and bowel health outcomes using nationally

'The tablets make a certain noise': uncovering barriers and enablers related to providing PMTCT services to adolescents and young women living with HIV in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Zimbabwe antenatal HIV prevalence rate is 16.1%. HIV-positive pregnant adolescent girls and young women (AYW) are at high risk to experience perinatal mental health challenges, attributed to a combination of factors including HIV status, stigma and perinatal depression. Perinatal depression and stigma among AYW is understudied in Zimbabwe and may affect short- and long-term health of HIV positive mothers and their children, and can impact treatment adherence. METHODS: Qualitative data was gathered from four focus group discussions with (2 urban and 2 rural) PMTCT providers (N = 17

Multilevel analysis of discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDS and associated factors in Ghana: demographic health survey of 2022 Ghana data.

INTRODUCTION: The negative effects of stigma and discrimination in communities and families include medication non-adherence, heightened psychological distress, verbal and physical abuse, a lack of social support, isolation, and dangerous health behaviors such as hiding prescriptions. Despite the huge burden of HIV/AIDS discriminatory attitudes, limited studies were conducted in Ghana. Therefore, this study examines the burden of discriminatory attitudes and their determinant factors on people who are living with HIV/AIDS in Ghana. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of di

Gender Bias When Using Artificial Intelligence to Assess Anorexia Nervosa on Social Media: Data-Driven Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media sites are becoming an increasingly important source of information about mental health disorders. Among them, eating disorders are complex psychological problems that involve unhealthy eating habits. In particular, there is evidence showing that signs and symptoms of anorexia nervosa can be traced in social media platforms. Knowing that input data biases tend to be amplified by artificial intelligence algorithms and, in particular, machine learning, these methods should be revised to mitigate biased discrimination in such important domains. OBJECTIVE: The main goal of

IL36G genetic variant is independently associated with susceptibility, severity and joint involvement in psoriasis.

Psoriasis (PsO) is a chronic, immune-mediated, inflammatory and polygenic dermatosis associated with both physical and psychological burden that can be triggered by injury, trauma, infections and medications. The etiology of PsO is not fully elucidated but genetic, epigenetic and environmental factors are all likely to play a role. A case-control study was carried out to evaluate the frequency of the IL36G C>T (rs13392494) and the IL36G A>G (rs7584409) variants and their association with susceptibility, joint involvement and severity of PsO. The study included 154 patients with PsO and 154 con

[Non-suicidal self-injurious Behaviour: Insights into a littleknown Patient Population in Plastic Surgery].

BACKGROUND: Despite its high prevalence in adolescents and young adults, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is poorly known and understood in areas other than psychiatry. Due to this lack of knowledge, affected patients often face a lack of understanding as well as rejection and discrimination when seeking help from medical professionals. This not only hampers a lasting improvement of NSSI and the development of a trustful physician-patient relationship but may also lead to traumatisation of affected patients. Based on our patients' data, this article aims to inform interested plastic surgeons ab

A Mixed-Methods Trial of Broad Band Noise and Nature Sounds for Tinnitus Therapy: Group and Individual Responses Modeled under the Adaptation Level Theory of Tinnitus.

Objectives: A randomized cross-over trial in 18 participants tested the hypothesis that nature sounds, with unpredictable temporal characteristics and high valence would yield greater improvement in tinnitus than constant, emotionally neutral broadband noise. Study Design: The primary outcome measure was the Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI). Secondary measures were: loudness and annoyance ratings, loudness level matches, minimum masking levels, positive and negative emotionality, attention reaction and discrimination time, anxiety, depression and stress. Each sound was administered using MP3 pl

On the early diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease from multimodal signals: A survey.

INTRODUCTION: The number of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients is increasing with increased life expectancy and 115.4 million people are expected to be affected in 2050. Unfortunately, AD is commonly diagnosed too late, when irreversible damages have been caused in the patient. OBJECTIVE: An automatic, continuous and unobtrusive early AD detection method would be required to improve patients' life quality and avoid big healthcare costs. Thus, the objective of this survey is to review the multimodal signals that could be used in the development of such a system, emphasizing on the accuracy that

Absence of daytime 50 Hz, 100 microT(rms) magnetic field or bright light exposure effect on human performance and psychophysiological parameters.

The purpose of this study was to reproduce and extend two earlier studies of the effects of human exposure to 50 Hz magnetic fields (MF). In a recent paper, we described results of two double-blind investigations performed to examine effects of 100 microT(rms) 50 Hz MF exposure on psychological parameters in the same group of healthy human volunteers. In each exposure session, at 1 week intervals, with sham, continuous, and intermittent (15 s ON/OFF cycles) MF conditions, mood ratings, performance measures, and electrophysiological measures were taken. In the first study, significant amplitude

Music-evoked EEG signals for mental health assessment using two- and three-class classification.

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive method of measuring brain activity, has become a valuable tool in mental health research for examining neural activity associated with various psychological disorders and neurofeedback therapies, including music therapy. However, the use of EEG under music and no-music conditions for mental health screening remains insufficiently validated. METHODS: In this preliminary study, we implemented an experimental protocol in which 48 participants underwent EEG recordings during both music and no-music sessions with identical relaxation instr

Dynamic reduction of neural uncertainty shapes perceptual decisions in a Bayes-optimal manner.

Fast and accurate decisions are fundamental for adaptive behaviour. Theories of decision-making posit that evidence in favour of different choices is gradually accumulated until a critical value is reached. It remains unclear, however, which aspects of the neural code get updated during evidence accumulation. Here we investigated whether evidence accumulation relies on a gradual increase in the precision of neural representations of sensory input (i.e., a decrease in neural uncertainty). Healthy human volunteers (N = 32, 24 females) discriminated global motion direction over a patch of moving

Design and optimization of deep learning model based on multimodal data fusion for dynamic mental health assessment.

The dynamic assessment of mental health has emerged as a hotspot for study and application due to the rise in social pressure. However, onventional methods rely mostly on static scales or single-modal data, failing to fully capture multifaceted emotional and behavioral features. This study suggests a deep learning model based on multi-modal data fusion to address this problem. By combining information from multiple sources, including text and visuals, the model effectively identifies and dynamically monitors mental states. In the study, a multi-modal dataset containing text and image informati

Psychosocial burden and coping strategies among lymphoma patients: a nurse-led hematology care approach.

BACKGROUND: Patients with lymphoma frequently experience significant psychosocial burden, including anxiety, depression, and impaired quality of life, which may persist throughout the disease trajectory. Coping strategies and nurse-led care are recognized as important psychosocial determinants; however, their interrelationships remain insufficiently explored in lymphoma populations. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to assess psychosocial distress, coping strategies, and quality of life in patients with lymphoma, while also investigating the influence of nurse-led care and the possible mediating e

[Theta/beta ratio (NEBA) in the diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder].

INTRODUCTION: In July 2013, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the use of NEBA as the first device for the complementary evaluation of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is based on quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) and includes the standardised theta/beta ratio, the results of which were consistent with both the medical and psychological clinical evaluation. Likewise, it has proved to be a useful tool for determining whether the ADHD is primary, secondary or comorbid to another pathology. Yet, to date no publications have specified whether it is a total theta
