OBJECTIVE: To determine whether HDL size distribution and HDL subclasses are associated with coronary calcium scores.
METHODS: We screened 677 apparently healthy individuals by coronary tomography. One hundred twenty subjects were then recruited for the study and grouped by coronary artery calcification scores (CAC). Forty asymptomatic patients with atherosclerosis with CAC scores ≥75th percentile for gender and age were placed in the first group. Forty patients with CAC scores ≤25th percentile and 40 matched controls (CAC = 0) made up the two remaining groups. HDL samples were separated via

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by airflow limitation caused by emphysema and small airway narrowing. Quantitative evaluation of airway dimensions by multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) has revealed a correlation between airway dimension and airflow limitation. However, the effect of emphysema on this correlation is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to determine whether emphysematous changes alter the relationships between airflow limitation and airway dimensions as measured by inspiratory and expiratory MDCT.
METHODS: Ninety-one s

BACKGROUND: After performing instrumented spinal fusion with pedicle screws, postoperative imaging using CT to assess screw position may be necessary. Stainless steel implants produce significant metal artifact on CT, and the degree of distortion is at least partially dependent on the cross-sectional area of the implanted device. If the same effect occurs with titanium alloy implants, ability to precisely measure proximity of screws to adjacent structures may be adversely affected as screw size increases.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore asked whether (1) CT provides precise measurements of t

OBJECTIVES: To test the hypothesis that bone marrow oedema (BME) observed on MRI in patients with avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head represents an indicator of subchondral fracture.
METHODS: Thirty-seven symptomatic hips of 27 consecutive patients (53% women, mean age 49.2) with AVN of the femoral head and associated BME on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging were included. MR findings were correlated with computed tomography (CT) of the hip and confirmed by histopathological examination of the resected femoral head. Imaging studies were analysed by two radiologists with use of the ARCO

We report the case of a patient who suffered iatrogenic vertebral artery injury (VAI) during a cervical spine posterior fixation procedure. The patient suffered massive bleeding and hemorrhagic shock at the time of screws placement in C1 lateral mass and C2 pedicle. The postoperative MRI and CT angiography showed a pseudoaneurysm 7.0 cm in diameter in the cervical spine. The iatrogenic VAI during posterior screw fixation is extremely rare. But, it can cause catastrophic consequences. We discuss the causes for the iatrogenic VAI and review the preventative measures and suitable management to av

INTRODUCTION: Central venous catheterization plays an important role in the treatment of emergency patients who require renal replacement therapy. Emergency patients with end-stage renal disease are at high risk for development of complications because of coagulation disorders, tissue, and organ changes due to uremia, anatomic variations, and obstruction of the large central veins. Complications associated with catheter placement can be mechanical, infectious, and thrombotic, and may occur during or following insertion of central venous catheterization which is a life-saving procedure for pati

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is increasingly performed for the treatment of aortic stenosis. Computed tomography (CT) analysis is essential for pre-procedural planning. Currently available software packages for TAVR planning require substantial human interaction. We describe development and validation of an artificial intelligence (AI) powered software to automatically rend anatomical measurements and other information required for TAVR planning and implantation.
METHODS: Automated measurements from 100 CTs were compared to measurements from three expert clinician

Recent studies have suggested that focal and diffuse atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) have significantly different plaque composition, treatment efficacy and outcomes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the plaque characteristics of diffuse and focal lesions in patients who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) for the assessment of obstructive CAD. Patients with CAD-RADS score ≥ 2 were retrospectively reviewed. Plaque characteristics, composition and high-risk features were assessed. Plaques ≥ 20 mm or ≥ 25% of total vessel length were accepted as diffuse
