Attention-based deep learning for breast lesions classification on contrast enhanced spectral mammography: a multicentre study.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to develop an attention-based deep learning model for distinguishing benign from malignant breast lesions on CESM. METHODS: Preoperative CESM images of 1239 patients, which were definitely diagnosed on pathology in a multicentre cohort, were divided into training and validation sets, internal and external test sets. The regions of interest of the breast lesions were outlined manually by a senior radiologist. We adopted three conventional convolutional neural networks (CNNs), namely, DenseNet 121, Xception, and ResNet 50, as the backbone architectures and incorporat

Inverted papilloma and nasal polyp classification using a deep convolutional network integrated with an attention mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Inverted papilloma (IP) is a common sinus neoplasm with a probability of malignant transformation. Nasal polyps (NP) are the most frequent masses in the sinus. The classification of IP and NP using computed tomography (CT) is highly significant for preoperative recognition, treatment, and clinical examination. Few visible differences exist between IP and NP in CT, making it a challenge for otolaryngologists to distinguish between them. This study intended to classify IP and NP using a neural network and analyze its ability to discriminate the differences. METHODS: IP and NP in CT

Application of response surface methodology and artificial neural network for the preparation of Fe-loaded biochar for enhanced Cr(VI) adsorption and its physicochemical properties and Cr(VI) adsorption characteristics.

In this study, we optimized and explored the effect of the conditions for synthesizing Fe-loaded food waste biochar (Fe@FWB) for Cr(VI) removal using the response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network (ANN). The pyrolysis time, temperature, and Fe concentration were selected as the independent variables, and the Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of Fe@FWB was maximized. RSM analysis showed that the p-values of pyrolysis temperature and Fe concentration were less than 0.05, indicating that those variables were statically significant, while pyrolysis time was less significant due to i

Predicting the Kidney Graft Survival Using Optimized African Buffalo-Based Artificial Neural Network.

A variety of receptor and donor characteristics influence long-and short-term kidney graft survival. It is critical to predict the effectiveness of kidney transplantation to optimise organ allocation. This would allow patients to choose the best accessible kidney donor and the optimal immunosuppressive medication. Several studies have attempted to identify factors that predispose to graft rejection, but the results have been contradictory. As a result, the goal of this paper is to use the African buffalo-based artificial neural network (AB-ANN) approach to uncover predictive risk variables rel

Machine learning based risk prediction for Parkinson's disease with nationwide health screening data.

Although many studies have been conducted on machine learning (ML) models for Parkinson's disease (PD) prediction using neuroimaging and movement analyses, studies with large population-based datasets are limited. We aimed to propose PD prediction models using ML algorithms based on the National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening datasets. We selected individuals who participated in national health-screening programs > 5 times between 2002 and 2015. PD was defined based on the ICD-code (G20), and a matched cohort of individuals without PD was selected using a 1:1 random sampling method.

Predicting Substance Use Treatment Failure with Transfer Learning.

Transfer learning, which involves repurposing a trained model on a related task, may allow for better predictions with substance use data than models that are trained using the target data alone. This approach may also be useful for small clinical datasets. The current study examined a method of classifying substance use treatment success using transfer learning. Transfer learning was used to classify data from a nationwide database. We trained a convolutional neural network on a heroin use treatment dataset, then trained and tested on a smaller opioid use treatment dataset. We compared this m

Automated Kidney and Liver Segmentation in MR Images in Patients with Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease: A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Imaging-based total kidney volume (TKV) and total liver volume (TLV) are major prognostic factors in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) and end points for clinical trials. However, volumetry is time consuming and reader dependent in clinical practice. Our aim was to develop a fully automated method for joint kidney and liver segmentation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to evaluate its performance in a multisequence, multicenter setting. METHODS: The convolutional neural network was trained on a large multicenter dataset consisting of 992 MRI scans of 327

Joint Localization and Classification of Breast Cancer in B-Mode Ultrasound Imaging via Collaborative Learning With Elastography.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied in the computer-aided ultrasound diagnosis for breast cancer. Up to now, several CNN-based methods have been proposed. However, most of them consider tumor localization and classification as two separate steps, rather than performing them simultaneously. Besides, they suffer from the limited diagnosis information in the B-mode ultrasound (BUS) images. In this study, we develop a novel network ResNet-GAP that incorporates both localization and classification into a unified procedure. To enhance the performance of ResNet-GAP, we

Detection of Breast Cancer with Lightweight Deep Neural Networks for Histology Image Classification.

Many researchers have developed computer-assisted diagnostic (CAD) methods to diagnose breast cancer using histopathology microscopic images. These techniques help to improve the accuracy of biopsy diagnosis with hematoxylin and eosin-stained images. On the other hand, most CAD systems usually rely on inefficient and time-consuming manual feature extraction methods. Using a deep learning (DL) model with convolutional layers, we present a method to extract the most useful pictorial information for breast cancer classification. Breast biopsy images stained with hematoxylin and eosin can be categ

Automatic Premature Ventricular Contraction Detection Using Deep Metric Learning and KNN.

Premature ventricular contractions (PVCs), common in the general and patient population, are irregular heartbeats that indicate potential heart diseases. Clinically, long-term electrocardiograms (ECG) collected from the wearable device is a non-invasive and inexpensive tool widely used to diagnose PVCs by physicians. However, analyzing these long-term ECG is time-consuming and labor-intensive for cardiologists. Therefore, this paper proposed a simplistic but powerful approach to detect PVC from long-term ECG. The suggested method utilized deep metric learning to extract features, with compact

Using BI-RADS Stratifications as Auxiliary Information for Breast Masses Classification in Ultrasound Images.

Breast Ultrasound (BUS) imaging has been recognized as an essential imaging modality for breast masses classification in China. Current deep learning (DL) based solutions for BUS classification seek to feed ultrasound (US) images into deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to learn a hierarchical combination of features for discriminating malignant and benign masses. One existing problem in current DL-based BUS classification was the lack of spatial and channel-wise features weighting, which inevitably allow interference from redundant features and low sensitivity. In this study, we aim to

A novel multiscale and multipath convolutional neural network based age-related macular degeneration detection using OCT images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: One of the significant retinal diseases that affected older people is called Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD). The first stage creates a blur effect on vision and later leads to central vision loss. Most people overlooked the primary stage blurring and converted it into an advanced stage. There is no proper treatment to cure the disease. So the early detection of AMD is essential to prevent its extension into the advanced stage. This paper proposes a novel deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture to automate AMD diagnosis early from Optical Coherence
