Visual deficits are common after stroke and are powerful predictors for the chronic functional outcome. However, while basic visual field and recognition deficits are relatively easy to assess with standardized methods, selective deficits in visual primitives, such as shape or motion, are harder to identify, as they often require a symmetrical bilateral posterior lesion in order to provoke full field deficits. Therefore, we do not know how often they occur. Nevertheless, they can have severe repercussions for daily-life functioning. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and co-occurrence of h

The modulation of repetition effects by the lag between first and second presentations of a visual object during a speeded semantic judgment task was examined using both scalp event-related potentials (ERPs) and event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (efMRI). Four levels of lag were used within a single session, from zero to one, to tens of intervening stimuli, and which allowed partial separation of the effects of interference from the effects of time. Reaction times (RTs) showed that the magnitude of repetition priming decreased as lag increased. The ERP data showed two distinct

There is evidence for two types of sleep spindle activity, one with a frequency of about 12 cycles/s (cps) and the other of about 14 cps. Visual examination indicates that both spindle types occur independently, whereby the 12-cps spindles are more pronounced in the frontal and the 14-cps spindles in the parietal region. The purpose of this paper is to provide more information about the exact topography of these patterns. First the occurrence of distinct signals in anterior and posterior brain regions was verified using pattern recognition techniques based on matched filtering. Thus the existe

Typical glaucomatous visual field defects are often contiguous areas of diminished differential light sensitivity presenting as clusters of abnormally depressed points in the visual field chart. We investigated the value of recognizing arcuate cluster patterns, corresponding to the anatomy of the normal retinal nerve fiber layer. Cluster sizes were quantified using cluster volume and surface area. Clusters were analyzed separately in different regions of the visual field. Central 30 degrees static threshold fields from 87 eyes of 87 normal subjects and 101 eyes of 101 patients with glaucoma we

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease that integrates a series of motor symptoms and non-motor symptoms, making early recognition challenging. The exploration of biomarkers is urgently required. Abnormal eye movements in PD have been reported to appear in a variety of ways since eye tracking technology was developed, such as decreased saccade amplitude, extended saccade latency, and unique saccade patterns. Non-invasive, objective and simple eye tracking has the potential to provide effective biomarkers for the PD diagnosis, progression and cognitive impairment, as well as id

We investigate how vibrotactile wrist feedback can enhance spatial guidance for handheld tool movement in optical see-through augmented reality (AR). While AR overlays are widely used to support surgical tasks, visual occlusion, lighting conditions, and interface ambiguity can compromise precision and confidence. To address these challenges, we designed a multimodal system combining AR visuals with a custom wrist-worn haptic device delivering directional and state-based cues. A formative study with experienced surgeons and residents identified key tool maneuvers and preferences for reference m

Nine neurologically normal volunteers engaged in a recognition memory task for visually presented words while the magnetic flux normal to the scalp surface was measured with a whole-head neuromagnetometer. The relative timing of activity occurring during the task in different brain areas was determined. Occipital lobe areas became active first, followed by basal temporal areas. Temporoparietal and medial temporal areas became active next, during later portions of the recorded epoch, and appeared to activate in concert. Except for the occipital lobe, activity was predominantly in the left hemis

Sports activities and traffic accidents are leading to an increasing incidence of spinal injuries. To assist in correct and quick diagnosis of spinal fractures the radiologist such modern diagnostic tools as computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and digital radiography. Nevertheless. The plain film is of major importance for recognition of the type of fracture from its biomechanical pattern. Apart from this, the radiologist should decide individually what other examination(s) are needed for visualization of the full amount of damage. We found the model of Magerl and co-workers fo

Tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome is a rare autoimmune condition primarily affecting adolescents. Diagnosis is frequently delayed due to the nonspecific and temporally dissociated presentation of renal and ocular symptoms. We report the case of a 15-year-old girl who presented to her general practitioner with fatigue, polyuria, and recent weight loss. Laboratory workup revealed acute kidney injury with elevated serum creatinine and a tubular pattern of proteinuria, prompting timely referral to a pediatric hospital. Renal biopsy confirmed acute, non-granulomatous tubuloin

Abnormal inter-regional causalities can be mapped for the objective diagnosis of various diseases. These inter-regional connectivities are usually calculated over an entire scan and used to characterize the stationary strength of the connections. However, the connectivity within networks may undergo substantial changes during a scan. In this study, we developed an objective depression recognition approach using the dynamic regional interactions that occur in response to sad facial stimuli. The whole time-period magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals from the visual cortex, amygdala, anterior cin

The aim of this study was to examine the neural substrates of multi-object naming by positron emission tomography in normals. Multi-object naming is used in a technique called contextual priming (CP) to elicit contextual effects on picture naming through systematic manipulation of the relatedness of to-be-named pictures in an array. Inhibitory and facilitatory effects of CP on naming have been used both to highlight the inner dynamics of the normal word retrieval system and to treat naming difficulties caused by acquired anomia. Because of the complexity of the CP technique, it is unclear whet

Malignant lymphomas can be first detected in some patients in endoscopic biopsies of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. However, their recognition and accurate classification often pose problems for the pathologist for several reasons. First, the small sampling size limits pattern recognition and the number of ancillary studies which can be performed. Second, the immune system of the GI tract is capable of intense hyperplastic responses which may mimic lymphoma. Third, in a fashion similar to cutaneous lesions, those in the alimentary tract may be visualized and biopsied at a very early phase in

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits are the most enduring and debilitating sequelae of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, relatively little is known about whether the cognitive effects of mTBI vary with respect to time post-injury, biological sex, and injury location.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the side and site of mTBI and to determine whether these effects are sexually dimorphic.
METHODS: Male and female ICR mice were subjected to either a sham procedure or mTBI to the temporal lobes (right-sided or left-sided) or to the frontal lobes (bilateral) usi

Carboxylic acids (CAs) have been reported as potential biomarkers of specific diseases or human body odors. A visual sensor array is described here that is based on indicator displacement assays (IDAs). The arrays were prepared by spotting solutions of the following metal complexes: Murexide-Ni(II), murexide-Cu(II), zincon-Zn(II) and xylenol orange-Cu(II), with the capability of discrimination of 15 carboxylic acids (CAs) and the quantitation of pyruvic acid (PA). Clear differences can be observed through distinctive difference maps obtained within 5 min by subtraction of red, green and blue (

AIMS: White matter damage is the main pathological feature of chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) and glial activation is crucial in this process. Physical exercise has protective effects on CCH, but the mechanism is unclear. Therefore, this study focuses on investigating the influence of physical exercise on activated astrocytes polarization and its role in CCH.
MAIN METHODS: Rats were given wheel running 48 h after 2VO (2 vessel occlusion) surgery. The cognitive function was evaluated by Morris water maze and novel object recognition test. Inflammatory cytokines expressions were detected b

Memories are not stored as static engrams, but as dynamic representations affected by processes occurring after initial encoding. Previous studies revealed changes in activity and mnemonic representations in visual processing areas, parietal lobe, and hippocampus underlying repeated retrieval and suppression. However, these neural changes are usually induced by memory modulation immediately after memory formation. Here, we investigated 27 healthy participants with a two-day functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging study design to probe how established memories are dynamically modulated by retriev

Motor vehicle collisions cause substantial mortality, morbidity, and expense worldwide. Certain types of injuries are more likely to result from frontal versus side-impact collisions, and knowledge of these specific patterns and why they occur aids in accurate and efficient diagnosis of traumatic injuries. Although the proper use of seat belts decreases crash-related mortality during frontal impact, certain injury patterns to the torso are directly attributed to restraint use. The spectrum of seat belt-related injuries ranges from mild skin and soft-tissue contusions to traumatic bowel injurie

The Brief presentation of a complex scene entails that only a few objects can be selected, processed indepth, and stored in memory. Both low-level sensory salience and high-level context-related factors (e.g., the conceptual match/mismatch between objects and scene context) contribute to this selection process, but how the interplay between these factors affects memory encoding is largely unexplored. Here, during fMRI we presented participants with pictures of everyday scenes. After a short retention interval, participants judged the position of a target object extracted from the initial scene

Traditionally, the lateral premotor cortex (PM) is assigned a role in stimulus-driven rather than memory-driven motor control, whereas the opposite holds for the mesial premotor cortex (supplementary motor area, SMA). Consistently, patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), in which a specific functional degradation of the mesial loop (i.e., SMA-Striatum) occurs, show impaired memory-driven but relatively preserved stimulus-driven motor control. However, both parts of the premotor cortex are involved in perceptual prediction tasks as well. Here we tested whether the functional bias described on t
