Prognostic Value of Michigan State University (MSU) Classification for Lumbar Disc Herniation: Is It Suitable for Surgical Selection?

BACKGROUND: Alcohol industry organisations occupy a prominent position in UK alcohol policy, but their involvement has been contested by public health bodies on the basis that a conflict of interest (COI) exists between their economic objectives and those of public health. There are ongoing debates in the research literature about how to conceptualise COI and mitigate this in health research and practise. However, less attention has been paid to these issues in relation to the alcohol industry specifically. This article explores similarities and differences in beliefs among alcohol policy acto

Subjective cognitive complaints and sickness absence: A prospective cohort study of 7059 employees in primarily knowledge-intensive occupations.

Knowledge-intensive work requires capabilities like monitoring multiple sources of information, prioritizing between competing tasks, switching between tasks, and resisting distraction from the primary task(s). We assessed whether subjective cognitive complaints (SCC), presenting as self-rated problems with difficulties of concentration, memory, clear thinking and decision making predict sickness absence (SA) in knowledge-intensive occupations. We combined SCC questionnaire results with reliable registry data on SA of 7743 professional/managerial employees (47% female). We excluded employees w

Implementing bubble continuous positive airway pressure in a lower middle-income country: a Nigerian experience.

Bubble CPAP (bCPAP) is used for respiratory distress (RD) in neonates. The leading causes of neonatal mortality can lead to severe RD. Many neonatal deaths are preventable using evidence-based interventions like bCPAP as part of a comprehensive approach. The study aimed to assess the implementation of a multi-center, comprehensive hospital-based bCPAP program in a low-middle-income country using a low-cost bCPAP device. Seven established hospitals in three Nigerian States were selected using purposive sampling. A respiratory support program was developed and implemented using the Pumani® bCPAP

Orthopaedic Resident Burnout: A Literature Review on Vulnerability, Risk Factors, Consequences and Management Strategies.

Introduction: Orthopaedic surgery is physically demanding. Surgeons may have to work long unpredictable hours especially during residency training. This arduous task comes with the risk of burnout leading to negative repercussions to the surgeon and the patient. In view of strategising peer support, we intend to review the literature and analyse whether orthopaedic resident burnout is a global issue. We also intend to derive common strategies to tackle burnout at individual and organisational levels. Materials and Methods: A literature search was carried out in the databases including PubMed,

When Clinicians Drop Out and Start Over after Adverse Events.

BACKGROUND: The impact of adverse clinical events on health care workers has become a growing topic of research. Previous research has confirmed that after adverse clinical events, clinical staff often feel as though they failed not only their patient but also themselves, resulting in second-guessing of their clinical skills, competencies, and even career choices. This exploratory study reports on the experiences of health care providers who changed career paths as a consequence of an adverse clinical event. METHODS: The authors designed a 39-question survey capturing personal and professiona

Should frail older adults be in long-term care facilities?

AIM: Home-based nursing care is relatively easy to access in Norway compared to the rest of Europe, and the threshold for applying for assistance is relatively low. The aim of the present study was to analyze factors that enable frail older adults to live in their own homes, with a low level of care burden stress. METHODOLOGY: In 2015 and 2016, eight municipalities from different parts of Norway participated in a cross-sectional study. The quantitative part of the project consisted of assessing care of 71 older adults, aged ≥80 years, using a geriatric comprehensive assessment. The qualitativ

A TRAINING PROGRAM FOR NURSING STAFF REGARDING BLOOD PARASITES ACQUIRED BY NEEDLE STICK INJURY IN A MILITARY HOSPITAL.

UNLABELLED: Nurses are likely to be exposed to microorganisms during their daily practice due to their close and frequent direct contact with patients. This could be one of the main causes of transmitting infection to the patients. Therefore, nurses should demonstrate the ability to effectively utilize principles of infection control, nurses should have professional and ethical responsibilities to make sure that their knowledge and skills regarding infection control are up-to-date and they practice safely and competently at all times. AIM: At assessing the effect of a training program for Mil

Traversing the RNA world.

An invitation to write a "Reflections" type of article creates a certain ambivalence: it is a great honor, but it also infers the end of your professional career. Before you vanish for good, your colleagues look forward to an interesting but entertaining account of the ups-and-downs of your past research and your views on science in general, peppered with indiscrete anecdotes about your former competitors and collaborators. What follows will disappoint those who await complaint and criticism, for example, about the difficulties of doing research in the 1960s and 1970s in Eastern Europe, or tho

Health Informatics Can Avoid Committing Symbolic Violence by Recognizing and Supporting Generic Decision-making Competencies.

'Symbolic violence' is committed, however well-intentionally, by the imposition of particular conceptualizations of what information, in what form and quality, is needed in order to make an 'informed choice' and hence - by questionable segue - a high quality decision. The social and cultural forms of relevant cognitive capital possessed by those who fail, because of their low general literacy, professionally-set knowledge tests of functional health literacy, are being ignored. Failing to recognise and exploit a particular form of functional decision literacy, in fact leads to symbolic violence

Concussion Frequency Associates with Musculoskeletal Injury in Retired NFL Players.

OBJECTIVE: Concussion is commonly associated with immediate and persistent alterations in motor function affecting postural control and gait. Patients with lower extremity joint injury have demonstrated functional alterations in the cerebral cortex, suggesting that musculoskeletal injury may be linked to alterations in brain function. Therefore, we examined the associations between concussion frequency and lower extremity musculoskeletal injury sustained during professional careers of National Football League (NFL) players in a cross-sectional study. METHODS: An inclusive health history surve

Development of Suck and Swallow Mechanisms in Infants.

Preterm infants' hospital discharge is often delayed due to their inability to feed by mouth safely and competently. No evidence-based supported guidelines are currently available for health-care professionals caring for these infants. Available interventions advocating benefits are not readily acknowledged for lack of rigorous documentation inasmuch as any improvements may ensue from infants' normal maturation. Through research, a growing understanding of the development of nutritive sucking skills has emerged, shedding light on how and why infants may encounter oral feeding difficulties due

Assessment of mammography experiences and satisfaction among American Indian/Alaska Native women.

BACKGROUND: American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) women have lower breast cancer (BCA) screening and 5-year survival rates than non-Hispanic Whites. Understanding reasons for low screening rates is important to combatting later stage diagnoses. The purpose of this study was to assess mammography experiences and satisfaction among AI/AN women. METHODS: Nine focus groups were held with rural (N = 15) and urban (N = 38) AI/AN women 40 years and older in Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, living both near and far from Indian Health Service (IHS) and tribal facilities, to examine experiences and sa

The prevalence, variety and impact of wrist problems in elite professional golfers on the European Tour.

OBJECTIVES: Golf is a popular sport played by an estimated 57 million people. Previous studies on wrist injuries in elite golfers have been of simple design and have demonstrated such injuries to be frequent, although no studies report the incidence, variety, severity or impact on the activity of wrist injuries in detail. This prospective cross-sectional study assesses these factors in a cohort of elite professional golfers. METHODS: European Tour golfers eligible to compete at the 2009 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth were studied. Study design involved the completion of a structured questi
