Evaluation of transplantation of autologous bone marrow stromal cells into the cerebrospinal fluid for treatment of chronic spinal cord injury in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of transplantation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) into the CSF for the treatment of chronic spinal cord injury in dogs that had not responded by 1 month after decompressive surgery. ANIMALS: 23 dogs. PROCEDURES: Dogs with paraplegia and loss of nociception in the pelvic limbs for at least 1 month after decompressive surgery were assigned to transplantation or control groups. Dogs in the transplantation group received BMSCs injected into the CSF 1 to 3 months after decompressive surgery. Dogs in the control group did not receive additional treatments. Impr

Voxel-based morphometry depicts central compensation after vestibular neuritis.

OBJECTIVE: Patients who have had vestibular neuritis (VN) show a remarkable clinical improvement especially in gait and posture >6 months after disease onset. METHODS: Voxel-based morphometry was used to detect the VN-induced changes in gray and white matter by means of structural magnetic resonance imaging. Twenty-two patients were compared an average 2.5 years after onset of VN to a healthy sex-and age-matched control group. RESULTS: Our analysis revealed that all patients had signal intensity increases for gray matter in the medial vestibular nuclei and the right gracile nucleus and for w

The role of the right parietal lobe in anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) overestimate their size despite being severely underweight. Whether this misperception echoes an underlying emotional disturbance or also reflects a genuine body-representation deficit is debatable. Current measures inquire directly about subjective perception of body image, thus distinguishing poorly between top-down effects of emotions/attitudes towards the body and disturbances due to proprioceptive disorders/distorted body schema. Disorders of body representation also emerge following damage to the right parietal lobe. The possibility that pa

Neurological symptoms in patients with biopsy proven celiac disease.

In celiac disease (CD), the gut is the typical manifestation site but atypical neurological presentations are thought to occur in 6 to 10% with cerebellar ataxia being the most frequent symptom. Most studies in this field are focused on patients under primary neurological care. To exclude such an observation bias, patients with biopsy proven celiac disease were screened for neurological disease. A total of 72 patients with biopsy proven celiac disease (CD) (mean age 51 +/- 15 years, mean disease duration 8 +/- 11 years) were recruited through advertisements. All participants adhered to a glute

[Mobility and balance].

Quality of life is strongly associated with the mobility of elderly people. Falls often cause restricted mobility, a decline in activities of daily living and an increased risk of institutionalisation. Frailty, commonly associated with aging, is a biologic syndrome of decreased resistance to stressors, resulting from declines across multiple physiological systems. Changes in mobility and gait constitute part of the frailty syndrome. Since more than one third of persons over the age of 65 fall each year, prevention of falls is very important. Already while taking the patients' history special e

MR analysis of regional brain volume in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: neurological manifestation of a systemic disease.

PURPOSE: To investigate whether regional brain volumes in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients differ from matched control subjects as AIS subjects are reported to have poor performance on combined visual and proprioceptive testing and impaired postural balance in previous studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty AIS female patients with typical right-convex thoracic curve (age range,11-18 years; mean, 14.1 years) and 26 female controls (mean age, 14.8 years) underwent three-dimensional magnetization prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo (3D-MPRAGE) MR imaging. Neural mechanisms underlying somatic tinnitus.

Somatic tinnitus is clinically observed modulation of the pitch and loudness of tinnitus by somatic stimulation. This phenomenon and the association of tinnitus with somatic neural disorders indicate that neural connections between the somatosensory and auditory systems may play a role in tinnitus. Anatomical and physiological evidence supports these observations. The trigeminal and dorsal root ganglia relay afferent somatosensory information from the periphery to secondary sensory neurons in the brainstem, specifically, the spinal trigeminal nucleus and dorsal column nuclei, respectively. Spontaneous and experimental glycoprotein storage disease of goats induced by Ipomoea carnea subsp fistulosa (Convolvulaceae).

Spontaneous and experimental poisoning with the swainsonine-containing and calystegine-containing plant Ipomoea carnea subsp fistulosa is described. Three of 8 goats presenting with emaciation, weakness, symmetrical ataxia, posterior paresis, proprioceptive deficits, abnormal posture, abnormal postural reaction, and muscle hypertonia were necropsied. I fistulosa was suspected to be the cause of the neurologic disease in all cases. An experiment was conducted to confirm the diagnosis using 12 goats and diets containing 3 different concentrations of the plant. All goats fed I fistulosa developed

Reinnervation of hind limb extremity after lumbar dorsal root ganglion injury.

Loss of dorsal root ganglion neuron, or injury to dorsal roots, induces permanent somatosensory defect without therapeutic option. We explored an approach to restoring hind limb somatosensory innervation after elimination of L4, L5 and L6 dorsal root ganglion neurons in rats. Somatosensory pathways were reconstructed by connecting L4, L5 and L6 lumbar dorsal roots to T10, T11 and T12 intercostal nerves, respectively, thus allowing elongation of thoracic ganglion neuron peripheral axons into the sciatic nerve. Connection of thoracic dorsal root ganglion neurons to peripheral tissues was documen

Deficits of anticipatory grip force control after damage to peripheral and central sensorimotor systems.

Healthy subjects adjust their grip force economically to the weight of a hand-held object. In addition, inertial loads, which arise from arm movements with the grasped object, are anticipated by parallel grip force modulations. Internal forward models have been proposed to predict the consequences of voluntary movements. Anesthesia of the fingers impairs grip force economy but the feedforward character of the grip force/load coupling is preserved. To further analyze the role of sensory input for internal forward models and to characterize the consequences of central nervous system damage for a

Impaired spatial learning after hypergravity exposure in rats.

Most astronauts experience spatial disorientation after exposure to weightlessness, indicating that constant gravity is utilized as a stable external reference during spatial cognition. We attempted to elucidate the role of constant gravity in spatial learning using a radial arm maze test on rats housed in a hypergravity environment (HG) produced by a centrifuge device. Male Wistar rats were kept in 2G linear acceleration for 2 weeks before the spatial learning task, which lasted for 10 days. The control rats were placed close to the centrifuge device but not exposed to hypergravity. Spatial l

Musculoskeletal rehabilitation in osteoporosis: a review.

Measures of musculoskeletal rehabilitation play an integral part in the management of patients with increased fracture risk because of osteoporosis or extraskeletal risk factors. This article delineates current scientific evidence concerning nonpharmacologic approaches that are used in conjunction with pharmacotherapy for prevention and management of osteoporosis. Fractures caused by osteoporotic fragility may be prevented with multidisciplinary intervention programs, including education, environmental modifications, aids, and implementation of individually tailored exercise programs, which ar

Neuropeptides in experimental and degenerative arthritis.

Classical symptoms of both inflammatory and degenerative arthritides may contribute to neurogenic responses like wheal, flare, edema, and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease with an immunogenetic background. Neurogenic inflammation has been considered to play an essential role in RA, in part because of the symmetrical involvement (cross-spinal reflexes) and the predominant involvement of the most heavily innervated small joints of the hands and the feet (highly represented in the hominiculus). In contrast, osteoarthritis (OA) is considered to arise as a result of degenerat

[Ototoxicity-related vertigo].

Many substances may be the source of dizziness or transient equilibrium disturbances due to dysfunction of the CNS or to an impairment of visual or proprioceptive informations. Other agents are responsible for drop of arterial pressure by changing position, including antihypertensive drugs, alpha-blocking agents used in urology, antipsychotics, cyclic antidepressants, vasodilators and nitrates, dopaminergic antiparkinson drugs, sedatives, etc. Only drug with true ototoxic properties will be discussed here, namely substances that are able to damage the inner ear (cochlear or vestibular damage)

Reliability of position sense testing assessed with a fully automated system.

Position sense testing has increased as a tool for augmenting evaluation of joint injury. In the present study, we investigated the inter-day reliability for four different types of position sense tests using a fully automated system. The tests included (1) passive presentation/active replication, (2) passive presentation/passive replication, (3) semi-passive presentation/semi-passive replication (where semi-passive denotes passive movement during antagonist muscle contraction), and (4) active presentation/active replication. The absolute difference between presented target and replicated posi

Posture Training Support: preliminary report on a series of patients with diminished symptomatic complications of osteoporosis.

Back supports are often used to minimize or prevent complications of osteoporosis. Nevertheless, the few related studies to date reveal that the currently available thoracolumbar and lumbosacral supports have substantial limitations, including (1) poor compliance because of discomfort or restricted motion, (2) expense, (3) unacceptable cosmetic and aesthetic appearance, and (4) medical contraindications to the use of rigid supports. We report the initial results of a clinical trial of the Posture Training Support (a thoracolumbar support) in 29 women and 1 man with osteoporosis or osteopenia o

Bilateral microsurgical lysis of the spinal accessory nerve roots for treatment of spasmodic torticollis. Follow up of 33 cases.

In 1981 we reported about a new surgical procedure for the treatment of spasmodic torticollis (ST). 33 patients, who failed to respond to the available conservative treatment, underwent a bilateral microsurgical lysis (BML) of the spinal accessory nerve roots (SRAN). Anastomoses between SRAN and the dorsal roots of the first and second cervical nerve (DRC 1/DRC 2) were cut. DRC 1 and sometimes DRC 2 were divided bilaterally. Moreover, SRAN was freed of all adhesions and vascular contacts. Up to 60 months after surgery we have excellent results in 5(5), good results in 10(7) and improved sympto
