Diameter Changes in Traumatic Aortic Injury: Implications for Stent-Graft Sizing.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare aortic diameters from admission computed tomography angiography (CTA) scans to postoperative aortic diameters in patients with traumatic aortic injury (TAI) and evaluate the influence of substantial blood loss on aortic diameter. METHODS: The aortic databases of two tertiary university centers were retrospectively screened for patients with TAI between February 2002 and February 2019. Concomitant organ injuries, bone fractures, blood loss, and clinical outcomes were evaluated. Aortic diameters were measured in CTA upon admission and were compar

Mechanism and mortality of pediatric aortic injuries.

BACKGROUND: Aortic injuries are rare, but have a high mortality rate in children and adolescents. We sought to investigate mechanisms of injury and predictors of survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Kids' Inpatient Database (1997-2009) was used to identify cases of thoracic and abdominal aortic injury (International Classification of Diseases, ninth Revision, Clinical Modification codes 901.0, 902.0) occurring in children aged <20 y. Bivariate and risk-adjusted multivariate analyses were used to reveal associated diagnoses and procedures and to identify predictors of in-hospital mortality, re

Musculoskeletal pain and related risks in skydivers: a population-based survey.

INTRODUCTION: Sport parachuting from aircraft (skydiving) is a major aerial activity in which parachutists are subject to decelerating forces during parachute opening shock (POS), possibly as much as 3-5 G. While traumatic incidents related to POS have been reported, epidemiological data on musculoskeletal pain among skydivers is absent in the literature. The aim was therefore to examine the prevalence of self-rated musculoskeletal pain related to POS in a skydiver population and elicit related risk factors. METHODS: There were 658 Swedish sport skydivers who completed a structured web-based

Increased levels of conditioned fear and avoidance behavior coincide with changes in phosphorylation of the protein kinase B (AKT) within the amygdala in a mouse model of extremes in trait anxiety.

Patients diagnosed for anxiety disorders often display faster acquisition and slower extinction of learned fear. To gain further insights into the mechanisms underlying these phenomenona, we studied conditioned fear in mice originating form a bi-directional selective breeding approach, which is based on elevated plus-maze behavior and results in CD1-derived high (HAB), normal (NAB), and low (LAB) anxiety-related behavior mice. HAB mice displayed pronounced cued-conditioned fear compared to NAB/CD1 and LAB mice that coincided with increased phosphorylation of the protein kinase B (AKT) in the b

Risk factors for mortality in traumatic cervical spinal cord injury: Brazilian data.

BACKGROUND: Predictive factors for mortality are different among countries; knowledge of risk factors is important for planning strategies to reduce mortality in trauma. The objective of this study was to identify predictors of death in traumatic cervical spinal cord injury (TSCI) in Brazil. METHODS: From 2001 to 2005, 84 patients with clinically detectable TSCI were identified in this retrospective study. For each patient, neurologic and associated injuries, physiologic variables, complications, treatment, and hospital mortality were recorded. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression a

Position paper on symbiotic intelligence in healthcare: Can AI help us better understand suicidal behavior and prevent suicide?

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people aged 10-24 worldwide, yet identifying individuals at risk remains a major challenge. In Norway, suicide rates reached their highest level in 25 years in 2024, underscoring persistent knowledge gaps in national prevention efforts and the need for innovative, interdisciplinary, and supplementary approaches. There are no simple solutions to mental ill health or suicide, and no single factor can adequately explain such complex phenomena; however, it remains crucial to examine how interacting risk factors may increase vulnerability and

Utility and outcomes of prehospital vasopressors infusion in trauma patients: a systematic review.

Traumatic hemorrhagic shock (THS) remains a leading cause of potentially preventable mortality in the prehospital setting. The role of prehospital vasopressors (PhVP) before definitive hemorrhage control during prehospital trauma management remains uncertain. We aimed to evaluate the utility and association between PhVP use and clinical outcomes in trauma patients presenting with hypotension or at risk of the THS. A systematic review of observational studies was conducted and studies were retrieved through MEDLINE/PubMed and CENTRAL databases search between 2015 and 2026. Studies participants

Combined melatonin and curcumin treatment ameliorates renal ischemia-reperfusion injury via reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in rats.

Renal ischemia-reperfusion (Isc-Rep) injury commonly occurs during kidney transplantation, renal vascular surgery, or traumatic hemorrhagic shock, and is marked by excessive oxidative stress and inflammation. We aimed to examine the antioxidant properties of the melatonin-curcumin combination in an experimental renal Isc-Rep model in rats. Thirty-five rats were allocated into five distinct experimental groups. While the rats in the Control (C) group did not undergo any surgical procedure, each of the rats in the remaining groups underwent 45 minutes of renal ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfu

Association of Primary Trauma Care training with mortality in isolated traumatic brain injury: A sub-analysis of the PISTACHIO study in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: The association of the Primary Trauma Care (PTC) program with Isolated Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), where mortality is driven by secondary brain injury rather than haemorrhagic shock, remains underexplored in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. METHODS: This prospective before-and-after study analysed 1388 patients with isolated TBI (head injury without significant extracranial trauma) at two provincial hospitals in Vietnam. Patients were stratified by admission Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS). The primary outcomes were 24-hour and 30-day mortality. Sensitivity analyses, including best- a

Chemogenetic inhibition of central amygdala CRF-expressing neurons decreases alcohol intake but not trauma-related behaviors in a rat model of post-traumatic stress and alcohol use disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are often comorbid. Few treatments exist to reduce comorbid PTSD/AUD. Elucidating the mechanisms underlying their comorbidity could reveal new avenues for therapy. Here, we employed a model of comorbid PTSD/AUD, in which rats were subjected to a stressful shock in a familiar context followed by alcohol drinking. We then examined fear overgeneralization and irritability in these rats. Familiar context stress elevated drinking, increased fear overgeneralization, increased alcohol-related aggressive signs, and elevated periphera
