Localization of sites within dorsal motor nucleus of vagus that affect gastric motility.

The purpose of our study was to determine the localization of sites within the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus (DMV) of the cat that when … orus). These increases in motility were maintained even at 200- and 400-Hz stimulation. Ipsilateral vagotomy or pretreatment with propantheline bromide prevented the increases in gastric motility produced by electrical stimulation of the DMV. Electrical stimulation of more rostral sites in the DMV, the medial nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), and an are …

Gastrointestinal factors in hunger and satiety.

The evidence for the participation of signals from the gastrointestinal tract in hunger and satiety is reviewed. Various methods of subjecti … ceptors, distention, and pressure, all of which may participate in satiety. The numerous effects of vagotomy on food intake are reviewed and an attempt is made to separate afferent from efferent effects and vagal effects from nonspecific surgical injury. The role of other afferents is explored. A brief survey of the most recent studies on humoral factors i …

Role of the parasympathetic nervous system in cancer initiation and progression.

The nervous system plays an important role in cancer initiation and progression. Accumulated evidences clearly show that the sympathetic nervous system exerts stimulatory effects on carcinogenesis and cancer growth. However, the role of the parasympathetic nervous system in cancer has been much less elucidated. Whereas retrospective studies in vagotomized patients and experiments employing vagotomized animals indicate the parasympathetic nervous system has an inhibitory effect on cancer, clinical studies in patients with prostate cancer indicate it has stimulatory effects. Therefore, the aim o

[The newly occurred and recurrent gastric ulcers after organ-preserving operations for the ulcer disease].

The literature data and the results of own investigations on gastric recurrent ulcers occurrence after organpreserving operations performance for the ulcer disease are summarized. The data on gastric recurrent ulcers occurrence rate are adduced. Modern views on possible causes of occurrence, necessary volume and informativity of investigation methods and tactics of treatment are presented. Gastroduodenal motor-evacuation function disorders, duodenogastric reflux and gastric hypersecretion are suggested as a most frequent causes of gastric recurrent ulcers occurrence. The method of operative in

Cardiovascular responses to carotid chemoreceptor stimulation in the dog: their modulation by urinary bladder distension.

Respiratory, heart rate and hindlimb vascular responses were studied in response to increasing levels of stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors, together with an examination of the modulation of their effects by distension of the urinary bladder in the dog anaesthetized with a mixture of chloralose and urethane. The vascularly isolated carotid bifurcation regions were perfused with blood, stimulation of the carotid bodies being carried out by three different levels of hypoxic isocapnic blood (PO2 approximately 58, 40 and 22 mmHg) obtained from a donor animal. A vascularly isolated hind

Excitatory and inhibitory responses of the ongoing sympathetic discharge in single renal neurons to liminal stimulation of aortic C-fibres in the rabbit.

Excitatory and inhibitory responses of sympathetic discharge were recorded in single renal postganglionic neurons of rabbits anaesthetized with urethane and chloralose. The animals were vagotomized and had transected aortic nerves. Responses were elicited by single volleys in the aortic C-fibres. Excitatory responses consisted in short-lasting increase in the rate of ongoing sympathetic discharge and were followed by inhibitory responses. Excitatory effects together with inhibitory responses were seen in 68% of units (19/28). Only excitatory effects appeared in 2 neurons (7.1%) and only inhibi

[Vagus nerve tonus].

The majority of investigators claim that the cause of vagotomic tachycardia is switching off the vagus nerve inhibitory tone, according to other authors the sympathetic nervous system stimulation is responsible for it. The second hypothesis is confirmed by the fact that vagotomic tachycardia is arrested by surgical desympathization in animals. Our data confirm this statement. We have ascertained that vagotomic tachycardia may be decreased by a surgical intervention without desympathization in animals. Artificial lung ventilation exerts the same effect on vagotomic tachycardia. Vagus tone depen

Argyrophil cells, mast cells, and histamine in the fundic mucosa of antrectomized patients.

Fasting gastrinemia, fundic argyrophil cell density, mast cell number, basal fundic histamine content and histidine decarboxylase activity were determined in 20 antrectomized patients and 20 control subjects. Fasting gastrinemia and fundic argyrophil cell density were significantly lower in antrectomized patients than in controls, whereas fundic mast cell number, basal histamine content, and histidine decarboxylase activity did not differ significantly between the two groups. In antrectomized patients the basal fundic histamine content appears related to the fundic mast cell number, as a conse

Blockade of NMDA receptor-channels by MK-801 alters breathing in adult rats.

The role of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-channel activation in the production of respiratory pattern was studied by administration of the NMDA receptor-channel blocker (+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-5,10-imine hydrogen maleate (MK-801, 1-3 mg/kg, i.v.) to anesthetized adult rats. This dose of MK-801 blocked the excitatory effects of NMDA (applied iontophoretically) on brainstem respiratory neurons. The predominant respiratory response to systemic MK-801 administration was an increase in inspiratory duration and a decrease in amplitude of diaphragm electromyogram

Modulation of respiratory responses to carotid sinus nerve stimulation by brain hypoxia.

This study examines the effect of progressive isocapnic CO hypoxemia on respiratory afterdischarge and the phrenic neurogram response to supramaximal carotid sinus nerve (CSN) stimulation. Twelve anesthetized, vagotomized, peripherally chemodenervated, ventilated cats with blood pressure controlled were studied. During isocapnic hypoxemia, the amplitude of the phrenic neurogram was progressively depressed. In contrast, the increase in peak phrenic amplitude produced by CSN stimulation was unchanged, suggesting that the central respiratory response to CSN stimulation is unaffected by progressiv

Cardiac effects of botulinal toxin.

Crystalline type A botulinal toxin rapidly caused temporary bradycardia and electrocardiographic (ECG) changes in mice, rats, rabbits and dogs. In addition, in the dog the force of contraction was measured and found to be depressed. The ECG changes were indicative of conduction defects. The hemagglutinin present in the toxin played no role in the effects on the heart, since a derivative toxin without hemagglutinin also caused these phenomena. The cardiac effects were spontaneously reversible in the intact animal without removal of the toxin. On the other hand, in the in vitro isolated heart of

Effects of hypocapnia on respiratory timing and inspiratory activities of the superior laryngeal, hypoglossal, and phrenic nerves in the vagotomized rat.

Effects of acute hypocapnia on respiratory timing (inspiratory and expiratory times (TI, TE) ) and on inspiratory activities of the efferent superior laryngeal (Xs1), hypoglossal (XII), and phrenic (Phr) nerves were studied in artificially ventilated vagotomized, and anesthetized rats. Hyperventilation induced a decrease in respiratory frequency exclusively due to prolongation of TE and resulted in expiratory apnea. Inspiratory activities of three nerves decreased with reduction in CO2 concentration of end-tidal gas (FETCO2), and disappeared simultaneously at a threshold FETCO2 for apnea. The
