ABO blood group system is the most commonly used blood group classification system in clinic practice. The relevant antigens, A, B and H determinants, are complex carbohydrate molecules that are expressed in red blood cells and other cell lines and tissues. These antigens are determined by the ABO locus located on chromosome 9 (9q34.1-q34.2). ABO blood group is associated with the development of many human diseases, e.g., cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases, and tumors. The relationship between the ABO blood group of pregnant women and various pregnancy complications, including preecl

BACKGROUND: Demand for O RhD-negative red cells continues to rise, while overall red cell transfusions have decreased, compounding inventory management challenges. We analyzed O RhD-negative red cell utilization in a large publicly available database.
METHODS: Data from 378,855 red cell transfusions were evaluated using the Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-III (REDS-III). Utilization patterns, recipient demographics, and their correlation with the age of red cell units at transfusion were examined.
RESULTS: The majority of O RhD-negative units were transfused to patients wit

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the relationship between ABO and Rhesus (Rh) blood groups and various health outcomes. However, a comprehensive evaluation of the robustness of these associations is still lacking.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, and several regional databases from their inception until Feb 16, 2024, with the aim of identifying systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies exploring associations between ABO and Rh blood groups and diverse health outcomes. For each association, we calculated

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the relationship between HELLP (hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, low platelets) syndrome and the maternal blood groups. Five hundred and forty-seven women with severe preeclampsia were included and divided into eight groups according to their blood groups: A Rh-positive (n=203), A Rh-negative (n=38), B Rh-positive (n=83), B Rh-negative (n=10), 0 Rh-positive (n=148), 0 Rh-negative (n=21), AB Rh-positive (n=39), and AB Rh-negative (n=5). The groups were controlled by analysis of variance and found to be homogeneous with respect to parity, ges

BACKGROUND: Prevention of hemolytic transfusion reactions depends upon our capacity to prevent allo-immunization and conflicts between antigens of transfused red blood cells and antibodies produced by the recipient. In this study, we show that to secure transfusion of sickle cell disease patients, it is necessary to take into account their immunohematologic characteristics in the organization of transfusion.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Immunohematological data of 206 chronically transfused patients have been collected as well as phenotypes of transfused units. In order to prevent allo-immunization a

Electronic crossmatching (E-XM) is used to detect ABO incompatibility. In developing countries, as many of the donations are from first-time donors, it is difficult to guarantee the accuracy of the ABO/Rh label on these units to use them for E-XM. This problem was overcome with a new software 'hemosoft', using donors' blood group declaration before donation as a tool for E-XM. During registration, donors either declare their blood group or give no comment. For, ABO/Rh grouping, either two results from different donations or only one in concordant with the declaration before donation is needed.

BACKGROUND: Collecting a patient's blood in a correctly labeled pretransfusion specimen tube is essential for accurate ABO typing and safe transfusion. Noncompliance with specimen collection procedures can lead to wrong blood in tube (WBIT) incidents with potentially fatal consequences. Recent WBIT events inspired the investigation of how various institutions currently reduce the risk of these errors and ensure accurate ABO typing of patient samples.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This article describes the techniques employed at various institutions across the United States to mitigate the risk of m

BACKGROUND: ABO-incompatible living donor liver transplantation (ABOi LDLT) is a complex procedure involving the reduction of anti-A and anti-B antibodies by therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) to prevent acute antibody-mediated rejection. Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is often used as replacement fluid during TPE.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report an ABOi LDLT case in which the patient experienced an anaphylactic reaction to FFP during TPE. Additional TPE was performed using 5% albumin as replacement fluid. ABOi LDLT was successfully performed by adapting the transfusion strategy to avoid FFP and cryopr

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Accurate and regular monitoring of anti-A and anti-B titres pre- and post-transplantation plays a crucial role in the clinical management of patients receiving ABO-incompatible renal transplants. There is no standardized protocol or an external quality assurance program (EQA) currently available for this testing in Australia. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity of techniques, test platforms and reagents that were currently in use in various laboratories with the aim of developing an EQA.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An online survey was sent to the part

We simultaneously transplanted a liver and kidney (SLK) into a 55-year-old woman with end-stage liver disease secondary to recurrent primary biliary cirrhosis. The patient was blood group O, the donor was A(2) (A, non-A1) and the patient's A isoagglutinin titer was 512. Good renal function was evident by normalization of her creatinine values following transplantation. Recovery was unremarkable and she was discharged on post op day 9. The patient has not experienced an episode of rejection in either organ during the 6 months of follow-up. This case is important because high A IgG isoagglutinin

Discrepancies between blood group genotype and RBC phenotype are important to recognize when implementing DNA-based blood grouping techniques. This report describes two such cases involving the ABO blood group in the Korean population. Propositus #1 was a 22-year-old healthy man undergoing pretransfusion testing for minor surgery. Propositus #2 was a 23- year-old male blood donor. RBCs from both propositi were determined to be group AB and demonstrated unusual agglutination patterns on forward typing, which were inconsistent with their ABO genotype determined by allele-specific (AS) PCR. RBCs

Antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) after liver transplantation is recognized in ABO incompatible and xeno-transplantation, but its role after ABO compatible liver transplantation is controversial. We report a case of ABO compatible liver transplantation that demonstrated clinical, serological and histological signs of AMR without evidence of concurrent acute cellular rejection. AMR with persistently high titers of circulating donor specific antibodies resulted in graft injury with initial centrilobular hepatocyte necrosis, fibroedematous portal expansion mimicking biliary tract outflow obstruct

OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine whether initiation of early phototherapy in positive direct Coombs' test (DCT) with ABO-incompatible newborns would prevent severe jaundice.
STUDY DESIGN: A prospective controlled study was performed at Al Qassimi Hospital. Infants born at term and weighing >2000 g with ABO incompatibility and a positive DCT were included in the study. Within their first 4 hours of life and after parental consent, infants were enrolled into one of two groups: prophylactic phototherapy group, which received phototherapy during the first 24 hours of life (g
