The optical response of hybrid metal-semiconductor nanoparticles exhibits different behaviors due to the proximity between the disparate materials. Bilirubin, the yellow substance usually responsible for neonatal jaundice, is currently monitored invasively or by observing/measuring skin colour. This paper investigates the feasibility of monitoring serum bilirubin concentration using light absorbance in a similar fashion to pulse oximetry. The light absorbance of bilirubin is shown to be sufficiently different to haemoglobin to in theory allow direct noninvasive serum bilirubin monitoring using light absorbance around 480nm.

One-hundred and five impacted and erupted sound teeth were analysed for lead content by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results showed that lead accumulated before eruption, presumably soon after the onset of dentine formation. The accumulation in dentine was systemic, without any contribution from the oral environment. A patient who had received digoxin for 6 months experienced glare and ocular pain induced by eye movement. The symptoms lasted for 2 days and disappeared within hours after the treatment was discontinued. Four months later, digoxin was readministered. After 2 days, the symptoms reappeared but disappeared again within hours of stopping treatment. The origin of the pain is uncertain, although mechanisms related to optic nerve or ocular muscle involvement should be considered. Digoxin toxicity should be included in the differential diagnosis of pain evoked by ocular movements.

Intestinal absorption of methylmercury complexed with non-protein sulfhydryl compounds (NPSHs) as occurs in bile was studied by means of direct injection of mercury compounds into ligated intestinal segments of rats. The extent of absorption of methylmercury-cysteinylglycine (MM-CysGly) was similar to that of methylmercury-cysteine (MM-Cys) and 1.5 times larger than that of methylmercury-glutathione (MM-GSH). Pure pigment stones, a minor variety of gallstones characterized by black appearance, were analyzed by infrared absorption spectroscopy.
