7208 Victims of domestic and public violence; an exploratory study based on the reports of assaulted individuals reporting to the police.

In this study, the data of 7208 victims (children and adults) of domestic and public violence were analysed after they reported this to the police in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In this analysis the characteristics of these intentional injuries were collected and compared. Despite some significant differences, there is no clear, specific way to distinguish between public and domestic violence. Therefore, it is more efficient for doctors to limit their focus to the differences between accidental and intentional injuries.

Iatrogenic ureteral injury. Options in management.

Twenty-five patients sustained 27 iatrogenic ureteral injuries during various operative procedures. Injuries were managed by ureteroureterostomy in 11 injuries, ureteroneocystostomy in 11, nephrectomy in two, ureteral stent in one, cutaneous ureterostomy in one, and reimplantation into an ileal conduit in one. Four of 25 patients died, three as a result of the failure of ureteral repair and intra-abdominal sepsis. Short-term failure of repair occurred in five patients; long-term failure occurred in three. All patients with injuries missed during the primary operation had poor results of ureter

Accidental deaths occurring in bed: review of cases and proposal of preventive strategies.

The bed is thought to be a safe place, but posses a number of risks that can cause deaths. To identify the causes of accidental death in bed and propose strategies for the prevention of further accidents, we surveyed and analyzed the literature on accidental deaths in bed from Japan and abroad, as well as legal cases related to accidental death in bed in Japan. A search of the medical literature in Japan (1983-2007), abroad (1976-2007), and Japan's legal cases (1989-2007) located 39 cases. The vast majority of accidental deaths in bed occur among infants and elderly individuals with neurologic

Usefulness of MRI detection of cervical spine and brain injuries in the evaluation of abusive head trauma.

BACKGROUND: In the evaluation of children younger than 3 years with intracranial hemorrhage it can be difficult to determine whether the cause of hemorrhage was traumatic, and if so, whether abusive head trauma (AHT) is a possibility. Cervical spine MRI is not a routine part of the nationally recommended imaging workup for children with suspected abusive head trauma. There is increasing evidence that spinal injuries are found at autopsy or MRI in abused children. However the prevalence of cervical spine injuries in children evaluated for abusive head trauma is unknown. We sought to determine b

[Pattern of injuries to the surgical team during ophthalmosurgical interventions].

BACKGROUND: Accidental sharp injuries among the health-care workers are frequent, especially in the surgical disciplines. Because there are only limited data available about accidental sharp injuries in small surgical disciplines, we investigated the occurrence of sharp injuries among ophthalmosurgeons in Switzerland. METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was sent to all 500 members of the Swiss Ophthalmological Association. We asked how often the surgeons or any member of the surgical team suffered injury during an ophthalmic surgery within the last 2 years and which instrument had caused the

Transoral penetrating craniocerebral injury: a case report and literature review.

A penetrating brain injury is a rare type of neurosurgical trauma associated with extremely high mortality and disability rates. Penetrating skull base injuries caused by arrows seldom occur because injuries caused by such weapons are more likely to be accidental. However, the number of self-inflicted injuries is increasing, and these injuries have varying patterns and high mortality rates. We report a case of a transoral penetrating craniocerebral injury caused by an arrow in a suicidal patient. Preoperative imaging is crucial for detecting and planning the surgical approach. Surgery is an ef

Head injury in very young children: mechanisms, injury types, and ophthalmologic findings in 100 hospitalized patients younger than 2 years of age.

Head injury in the youngest age group is distinct from that occurring in older children or adults because of differences in mechanisms, injury thresholds, and the frequency with which the question of child abuse is encountered. To analyze some of these characteristics in very young children, the authors prospectively studied 100 consecutively admitted head-injured patients 24 months of age or younger who were drawn from three institutions. Mechanism of injury, injury type, and associated injuries were recorded. All patients underwent ophthalmologic examination to document the presence of retin

Surgical management of basilar artery laceration caused by transorbital penetrating injury: case report.

Transorbital penetrating injuries are rare and present with a heterogeneity of intracranial injury patterns that require individualized therapeutic procedures. In this report, we describe the case of a distal basilar artery laceration in a 16-month-old boy caused by accidental transorbital penetration with a pencil. Surgical removal of the pencil was performed, but hemostasis could only be achieved by clipping the impaired vessel. Adequate diagnostics and an individualized surgical strategy are necessary to deal with these life-threatening injuries.

[Facial skeleton traumas in farmers in east-central region of Poland (part I)].

On the base of medical documentation, we presented epidemiological analysis of 215 patients treated for traumas of facial skeleton, which occurred during agricultural tasks. It was concluded that the injuries mentioned above occurred more frequently in males at the age between 18-40. The traumas in this group occurred mainly during use of jig saw or other tools and machinery used in agriculture. However in the female population injuries of facial skeleton resulted mainly from zoogenous trauma and accidental fall downs.

Anorectal impalement in a pediatric patient with transanal evisceration of small bowel.

Rectal injuries in the pediatric population are most often attributed to accidental falls on offending objects, sexual abuse, or blunt trauma. Anorectal impalement is a rare injury, and as a result, specific knowledge or experience on the treatment of this type of injury in children is sparse. The extent of injury is often difficult to assess. Mostly, therapeutical decisions are based on general knowledge in adults. We present a case of accidental anorectal impalement in a child by a fall on the handle of a toilet brush. The handle caused an anterior rupture of the intraperitoneal part of the

Imaging Traumatic Hand and Finger Injuries.

The hands and fingers play a vital role in everyday activities, which increases the risk for accidental injury. Imaging these potentially complex injuries is vital to successful diagnosis and treatment. Imaging techniques and best practices vary; multiple modalities might be needed to achieve an accurate diagnosis. This article discusses anatomy and common injuries of the hand and fingers. Methods for successful imaging also are described. A broad understanding of anatomy and imaging techniques enables radiologic technologists to better assist with hand trauma management.

Investigation of injuries sustained from falls down stairs.

Interpretation of injuries sustained from fatal falls involving stairs is a challenge encountered by death investigation teams regularly. The high incidence of this occurrence is because stairs are a common entity in society. Without a medical evaluation of an individual's injuries, it is difficult to determine whether a fall from stairs contributed to how the individual died. The purpose of this study is to characterize the injuries of individuals that were sustained from a confirmed fatal fall involving stairs within our jurisdiction (Ontario, Canada) during 2014-2020. In a retrospective cro
