Laboratory simulations of shocks created with a high-energy laser demonstrate that the efficacy of organic production depends on the molecular, not just the elemental composition of the shocked gas. In a methane-rich mixture that simulates a low-temperature equilibrium mixture of cometary material, hydrogen cyanide and acetylene were produced with yields of 5 x 10(17) molecules per joule. Therapy of Darier disease is rarely satisfactory. Oral retinoids can improve the skin lesions. Because of previous positive results with topical retinoids, which were often not practical because of marked skin irritation, two patients were treated with the new, topical acetylene-retinoid tazarotene in a 0.01% gel preparation. In both patients skin cleared within 2 to 4 weeks. After stopping the medication patients did not develop any new skin lesions for 12 months. Different types of aggregates of CdSe nanoparticles have been assembled by using bridging molecules such as thiolcarboxylic acids and alkanedithiols as by well as the click reaction involving cycloaddition between azido and acetylenic groups. The aggregates show photoluminescence spectra different from the pristine CdSe nanocrystals. Corannulene dimers made up of corannulene monomers with different curvature and substituents were studied using M06-2X, B97D and ωB97XD functionals and 6-31+G* basis set. Corannulene molecules were substituted with five alternating Br, Cl, CH(3), C(2)H or CN units. It was found that naloxone causes a small but significant reduction of motility. The GABAB agonist baclofen and the GABA transaminase inhibitor gamma-acetylenic GABA (GAG) also reduced locomotor activity. When a subeffective dose of baclofen was combined with naloxone 0.8 or 3.2 mg/kg, baclofen significantly inhibited motility beyond the inhibition caused by naloxone + saline. Substitution of one amino acid for another at the active site of an enzyme usually diminishes or eliminates the activity of the enzyme. In some cases, however, the specificity of the enzyme is changed.
