An acoustic-only multivariable diagnostic model for Parkinson's disease using bowel sound acoustic signatures.

BackgroundEarly detection of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains challenging due to the lack of reliable prodromal biomarkers. Non-invasive markers of gastrointestinal dysfunction are lacking.ObjectivesTo characterize bowel sound acoustic phenotypes in PD and evaluate their potential as non-invasive diagnostic markers by developing an acoustic-based predictive model.MethodsStandardized 5-min bowel sound recordings were collected from 120 PD patients and 100 controls. Thirteen acoustic features were extracted. LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) selected predictors for logistic

A New Internal Acoustic Canal Anomaly, Fused Single Internal Acoustic Canal: A Case Report.

The internal auditory canal (IAC) connects the inner ear to the posterior cranial fossa. In this case report, the authors presented an 8-month-old patient with an IAC anomaly and bilateral deafness. The patient has hypotonia and epilepsy, and there is multifocal epileptiform activity on Electroencephalography (EEG). Severe (total) sensorineural hearing loss was detected bilaterally. Temporal bone computed tomography showed that the internal acoustic canal is localized as a single entity at the midline and bifurcates into right and left branches approximately ~4 mm beyond. Following branching,

[Internal Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality Index version 03.01 und Acoustic Breathiness Index].

OBJECTIVE: Acoustics might have the potential to objectify voice quality (eg, hoarseness and breathiness). The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and the Acoustic Breathiness Index (ABI) revealed sufficient valid and reliable results in the evaluation of voice quality. The aim of the present study is to validate the recent version of AVQI 03.01 and ABI in their internal validation. The responsiveness of change is evaluated on the hoarseness and breathiness severity after voice therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In total, 84 voice samples of continuous speech and sustained vowel [a:] before and …

[Acoustic neurinoma located exclusively in cerebellopontine angle cistern ("cisternal" acoustic neurinoma): a case report].

This is a case report of acoustic neurinoma which was located exclusively in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) cistern and which did not extend into the internal auditory meatus ("cisternal" acoustic neurinoma). The 43-year-old female patient had signs of the left trigeminal nerve impairment including left face neuralgia. However, she did not have any neurootological symptom. No abnormal bony changes in the internal auditory meatus (IAM) were found by high-resolution bone-window CT. MRI showed a left CPA tumor of 25mm not extending into the IAM. The tumor was totally removed by the lateral subo

Use of TEOAE, ABR, and Acoustic Reflex Measures to Assess Auditory Function Patients With Acoustic Neuroma.

Cochlear and neural auditory function for a series of 30 patients with acoustic neuroma was assessed pre- and postoperatively by transiently evoked otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), auditory brain stem response (ABR), and acoustic reflex measures. Employing a retrosigmoid surgical approach, physical integrity of the acoustic nerve was preserved for 22 patients. TEOAEs were observed preoperatively for 13 patients and postoperatively for 6 of them. Postoperative neural function remained unchanged or improved following surgery for 7 patients, and cochlear function decreased. TEOAE, ABR, and acoustic

Acoustically Evoked Compound Action Potentials Recorded From Cochlear Implant Users With Preserved Acoustic Hearing.

OBJECTIVES: Less traumatic intracochlear electrode design and the introduction of the soft surgery technique allow for the preservation of low-frequency acoustic hearing in many cochlear implant (CI) users. Recently, new electrophysiologic methods have also been developed that allow acoustically evoked peripheral responses to be measured in vivo from an intracochlear electrode. These recordings provide clues to the status of peripheral auditory structures. Unfortunately, responses generated from the auditory nerve (auditory nerve neurophonic [ANN]) are somewhat difficult to record because they

Acoustic Voice Quality Index and Acoustic Breathiness Index: Analysis With Different Speech Material in the Brazilian Portuguese.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) and the Acoustic Breathiness Index (ABI) concurrent validity and diagnostic accuracy with different speech materials. METHODS: Voices of 53 subjects (40 dysphonic; 13 vocally health) were recorded: vowel /a/ + counting numbers 1-20 (42 syllables) + reading text (138 syllables). Numbers and text were edited in order to achieve 3 seconds of voiced segments, such as the vowel /a/ (average of 18.81 and 32.49 syllables; confidence interval of 1.87 and 2.30). The audio files were edited to have 17 syllables for numbers and 32 for text. T

Identifying Otosclerosis with Aural Acoustical Tests of Absorbance, Group Delay, Acoustic Reflex Threshold, and Otoacoustic Emissions.

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a progressive middle-ear disease that affects conductive transmission through the middle ear. Ear-canal acoustic tests may be useful in the diagnosis of conductive disorders. This study addressed the degree to which results from a battery of ear-canal tests, which include wideband reflectance, acoustic stapedius muscle reflex threshold (ASRT), and transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs), were effective in quantifying a risk of otosclerosis and in evaluating middle-ear function in ears after surgical intervention for otosclerosis. PURPOSE: To evaluate the ab

Acoustics-Derived Home-Based Sleep Study for the Diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in Adults With Intellectual Disabilities: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Adults with intellectual disabilities (IDs) face significant health inequalities and reduced life expectancy compared to the general population. Sleep disorders, including obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), are highly prevalent in this population; however, standard diagnostic modalities may be poorly tolerated and many people may remain undiagnosed. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of using an acoustic-derived home-based sleep study to diagnose OSA in adults with ID who were unable to tolerate standard inpatient or home sleep studies. METHOD: This was a prospective

Collecting language, speech acoustics, and facial expression to predict psychosis and other clinical outcomes: strategies from the AMP® SCZ initiative.

Speech-based detection of early psychosis is progressing at a rapid pace. Within this evolving field, the Accelerating Medicines Partnership® in Schizophrenia (AMP® SCZ) is uniquely positioned to deepen our understanding of how language and related behaviors reflect early psychosis. We begin with detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) that govern every stage of collection. These SOPs specify how to elicit speech, capture facial expressions, and record acoustics in synchronized audio-video files-both on-site and through remote platforms. We then explain how we chose our sampling tasks, h…

Acoustic-vibration characteristics of steel-spring floating-slab track based on acoustic wave superposition method.

Vibration-damping tracks of an urban rail transit vibrate under train loads and are a source of acoustic sound radiation in urban rail transit. In addition, they exhibit their own vibration amplification phenomenon during service. To evaluate the acoustic properties of damping tracks, this study considered acoustic wave superposition (AWSM) and examined a steel-spring floating-slab track (SSFST). This study focused on floating-slab (FS) acoustic radiation prediction and proposed a fast prediction method for the acoustic radiation of a track structure with a more regular shape. The influence of

Impact of extent of internal acoustic meatus tumor removal using translabyrinthine approach for acoustic neuroma surgery.

OBJECTIVES: Many studies have investigated the surgical outcome and predictive factors of acoustic neuroma using different approaches. The present study focused on large tumors due to the greater likelihood of internal acoustic meatus involvement and the greater application of surgical intervention than radiosurgery. There have been no previous reports on outcomes of internal acoustic meatus tumor removal. We investigated the impact of the extent of internal acoustic meatus tumor removal using a translabyrinthine approach for large acoustic neuroma surgery and predictive factors of tumor contr

Acoustic modulation of fungal friends and foes.

Targeted acoustic stimulation can modulate fungal growth, metabolism, and molecular activity. It offers a promising route to influence fungal performance in agriculture, biotechnology, ecosystem restoration, and medicine. In this opinion article, we review studies showing that acoustic waves can either enhance or suppress fungal processes depending on species and acoustic parameters. Proposed mechanisms include activation of mechanosensitive membrane channels, calcium signalling, and shifts in the pentose phosphate pathway and coenzyme A biosynthetic pathways. Responses vary widely, yet this v

Acoustic-driven magnetic skyrmion motion.

Magnetic skyrmions have great potential for developing novel spintronic devices. The electrical manipulation of skyrmions has mainly relied on current-induced spin-orbit torques. Recently, it was suggested that the skyrmions could be more efficiently manipulated by surface acoustic waves (SAWs), an elastic wave that can couple with magnetic moment via the magnetoelastic effect. Here, by designing on-chip piezoelectric transducers that produce propagating SAW pulses, we experimentally demonstrate the directional motion of Néel-type skyrmions in Ta/CoFeB/MgO/Ta multilayers. We find that the shea
