Epithelial cell senescence: an adaptive response to pre-carcinogenic stresses?

Senescence is a cell state occurring in vitro and in vivo after successive replication cycles and/or upon exposition to various stressors. It is characterized by a strong cell cycle arrest associated with several molecular, metabolic and morphologic changes. The accumulation of senescent cells in tissues and organs with time plays a role in organismal aging and in several age-associated disorders and pathologies. Moreover, several therapeutic interventions are able to prematurely induce senescence. It is, therefore, tremendously important to characterize in-depth, the mechanisms by which senes

Phosphorus physiological ecology and molecular mechanisms in marine phytoplankton.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for marine phytoplankton and indeed all life forms. Current data show that P availability is growth-limiting in certain marine systems and can impact algal species composition. Available P occurs in marine waters as dissolved inorganic phosphate (primarily orthophosphate [Pi]) or as a myriad of dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) compounds. Despite numerous studies on P physiology and ecology and increasing research on genomics in marine phytoplankton, there have been few attempts to synthesize information from these different disciplines. This paper is a

Snake-venom resistance as a mammalian trophic adaptation: lessons from didelphid marsupials.

Mammals that prey on venomous snakes include several opossums (Didelphidae), at least two hedgehogs (Erinaceidae), several mongooses (Herpestidae), several mustelids, and some skunks (Mephitidae). As a group, these taxa do not share any distinctive morphological traits. Instead, mammalian adaptations for ophiophagy seem to consist only in the ability to resist the toxic effects of snake venom. Molecular mechanisms of venom resistance (as indicated by biochemical research on opossums, mongooses, and hedgehogs) include toxin-neutralizing serum factors and adaptive changes in venom-targeted molec

Ionizing radiation and hematopoietic malignancies: altering the adaptive landscape.

Somatic evolution, which underlies tumor progression, is driven by two essential components: (1) diversification of phenotypes through heritable mutations and epigenetic changes and (2) selection for mutant clones which possess higher fitness. Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR ) is highly associated with increased risk of carcinogenesis. This link is traditionally attributed to causation of oncogenic mutations through the mutagenic effects of irradiation. On the other hand, potential effects of irradiation on altering fitness and increasing selection for mutant clones are frequently ignored.

Sink or swim? Bone density as a mechanism for buoyancy control in early cetaceans.

Previous analyses have shown that secondarily aquatic tetrapods, including whales, exhibit osteological adaptations to life in water as part of their complex buoyancy control systems. These structural specializations of bone span hyperostosis through osteoporosis. The past 15 years of paleontological effort has provided an unprecedented opportunity to examine the osteological transformation of whales as they make their transition to an obligate aquatic lifestyle over a 10-million-year period. It is hypothesized that whales manifest their osteological specialization in the same manner as extant

Investigating the in situ degradation of atrazine in groundwater.

This study focused on whether or not atrazine could be degraded by indigenous groundwater bacteria as part of an in situ remediation approach. Groundwater was taken from an unconfined middle upper chalk site where concentrations of atrazine and nitrate were typically in the ranges 0.02-0.2 microg litre-1 and 11.6-25.1 mg NO3-N litre-1 respectively. Sacrificial batch studies were performed using this groundwater spiked with atrazine at a concentration of 10 microg litre-1 in conjunction with a minimal mineral salts liquid (Glu-MMSL) medium which contained glucose as the sole carbon source. Trea

Isoprenoids: an evolutionary pool for photoprotection.

Plants have evolved several mechanisms for getting rid of excess energy in photosynthetic membranes, some of which involve isoprenoid compounds. In all photosynthetic organisms, the carotenoids beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, and tocopherols serve an important photoprotective role, either by dissipating excess excitation energy as heat or by scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS) and suppressing lipid peroxidation. Isoprene and some monoterpenes, diterpenes and other carotenoids also occur in some plant lineages. Compelling evidence indicates that these non-ubiquitous isoprenoids might be part

Surveillance and control of emerging zoonoses.

"Emerging zoonoses" are defined as zoonotic diseases caused either by apparently new agents, or by previously known microorganisms, appearing in places or in species in which the disease was previously unknown. New animal diseases with an unknown host spectrum are also included in this definition. Natural animal reservoirs represent a more frequent source of new agents of human disease than the sudden appearance of a completely new agent. Factors explaining the emergence of a zoonotic or potentially zoonotic disease are usually complex, involving mechanisms at the molecular level, such as gene

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research.

Biological membranes are more than structural boundaries: they are the thermodynamic interfaces that enable living systems to maintain a state far from equilibrium, continuously exchanging matter and energy with their environment. In this review, we explore three interconnected themes. First, we examine the biochemical composition of cell membranes, with particular focus on Escherichia coli, including lipid diversity, membrane asymmetry, and homeoviscous adaptation. Second, we reframe the membrane as the physical representation of the Markov blanket, the statistical boundary separating interna

Intra-specific diversity and adaptation modify regime shifts dynamics under environmental change.

Environmental changes are a growing concern, as they exert pressures on ecosystems. In some cases, such changes lead to shifts in ecosystem structure. However, species can adapt to changes through evolution, and it is unclear how evolution interacts with regime shifts, which restricts ecosystem management strategies. Here, we used a model of prey population with evolution and intra-specific trait diversity, and simulated regime shifts through changes in predation pressure. We then explored interactions between evolution, diversity, and shifts in population density. Evolution induced delayed or

Adaptive Introgression across Semipermeable Species Boundaries between Local Helicoverpa zea and Invasive Helicoverpa armigera Moths.

Hybridization between invasive and native species has raised global concern, given the dramatic increase in species range shifts and pest outbreaks due to anthropogenic dispersal. Nevertheless, secondary contact between sister lineages of local and invasive species provides a natural laboratory to understand the factors that determine introgression and the maintenance or loss of species barriers. Here, we characterize the early evolutionary outcomes following secondary contact between invasive Helicoverpa armigera and native H. zea in Brazil. We carried out whole-genome resequencing of Helicov

Convergent evolution of zoonotic Brucella species toward the selective use of the pentose phosphate pathway.

Mechanistic understanding of the factors that govern host tropism remains incompletely understood for most pathogens. Brucella species, which are capable of infecting a wide range of hosts, offer a useful avenue to address this question. We hypothesized that metabolic fine-tuning to intrahost niches is likely an underappreciated axis underlying pathogens' ability to infect new hosts and tropism. In this work, we compared the central metabolism of seven Brucella species by stable isotopic labeling and genetics. We identified two functionally distinct groups, one overlapping with the classical z

Evolutionary history and adaptation of a human pygmy population of Flores Island, Indonesia.

Flores Island, Indonesia, was inhabited by the small-bodied hominin species Homo floresiensis, which has an unknown evolutionary relationship to modern humans. This island is also home to an extant human pygmy population. Here we describe genome-scale single-nucleotide polymorphism data and whole-genome sequences from a contemporary human pygmy population living on Flores near the cave where H. floresiensis was found. The genomes of Flores pygmies reveal a complex history of admixture with Denisovans and Neanderthals but no evidence for gene flow with other archaic hominins. Modern individuals

[Function of the sodium-potassium pump and its corticosteroid regulation as factors limiting cardiac adaptation to severe physical exertion].

Experiments were carried out on male Wistar rats in order to clarify the leading biochemical mechanism responsible for an increase in the functional capacity of the heart. The obtained results indicate that the function of the Na,K-pump in myocardial sarcolemma is rather stable and deteriorates only during extreme exertion. The alteration of the Na,K-pump function due to a decrease in Na,K-ATP-ase activity leads to a decrease in the Na gradient and an accumulation of water in the cells which in turn reduces the capacity of the Na-Ca exchange mechanism and the rate of Ca removal from the myofib

Adaptive crystal formation in normal and pathological calcifications in synthetic calcium phosphate and related biomaterials.

Mineralization and crystal deposition are natural phenomena widely distributed in biological systems from protozoa to mammals. In mammals, normal and pathological calcifications are observed in bones, teeth, and soft tissues or cartilage. We review studies on the adaptive apatite crystal formation in enamel compared with those in other calcified tissues (e.g., dentin, bone, and fish enameloids) and in pathological calcifications, demonstrating the adaptation of these crystals (in terms of crystallinity and orientation) to specific tissues that vary in functions or vary in normal or diseased co

Imperfect transparency and camouflage in glass frogs.

Camouflage patterns prevent detection and/or recognition by matching the background, disrupting edges, or mimicking particular background features. In variable habitats, however, a single pattern cannot match all available sites all of the time, and efficacy may therefore be reduced. Active color change provides an alternative where coloration can be altered to match local conditions, but again efficacy may be limited by the speed of change and range of patterns available. Transparency, on the other hand, creates high-fidelity camouflage that changes instantaneously to match any substrate but

Reservoir and vector evolutionary pressures shaped the adaptation of Borrelia.

The life cycle of spirochetes of the genus Borrelia includes complex networks of vertebrates and ticks. The tripartite association of Borrelia-vertebrate-tick has proved ecologically successful for these bacteria, which have become some of the most prominent tick-borne pathogens in the northern hemisphere. To keep evolutionary pace with its double-host life history, Borrelia must adapt to the evolutionary pressures exerted by both sets of hosts. In this review, we attempt to reconcile functional, phylogenetic, and ecological perspectives to propose a coherent scenario of Borrelia evolution. Av
