BACKGROUND: Adenoid cystic carcinoma comprises approximately 10% of all epithelial salivary neoplasms and most frequently involves the parotid. Perineural invasion is a common feature but intraneural invasion and spread is less common.
AIM: The authors report a case of parotid adenoid cystic carcinoma with invasion and spread via the facial nerve with an emphasis on radiologic features.
OBSERVATION: We report a case of a 47-year-old man presenting with a right submandibular mass evolving for 4 years. On physical examination, the mass was firm painless, well delineated. There was no facial pa

Primary adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the lung is an extremely rare malignant lung neoplasm. ACC of salivary glands of the head and neck, lachrymal glands, breast, skin, vulva and trachea have been frequently reported disease patterns in the literature, but it is unique to see this rare lung tumour in a patient as young as 14 years old. No double blind placebo, multicentre treatment data are available. Surgery is considered as the cornerstone of the treatment. Prognosis is variable and adjuvant radiotherapy has been found beneficial for prolonged survival. Our report of primary lung ACC in

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of uterine cervix is a rare tumor. Its origin is debatable. It has a high incidence in postmenopausal women but rarely can develop in patients under 40. An association with squamous cell carcinoma has been described. We report a case of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the endocervical canal with foci of squamous cell carcinoma in a 34-year-old suffering from menorrhagia associated with blood-stained vaginal discharge. Per vaginum and per speculum examination revealed a growth. Cervical biopsy showed bits of tissue, suggesting adenoid cystic carcinoma. Patient was operated

Unusual presentation of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the maxillary antrum. Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare tumour which affects mainly the major and accessory salivary glands. It is an aggressive neoplasm characterized by early neural invasion and a high incidence of local recurrence and distant metastases, which may develop years after the initial resection. Surgery followed by radiotherapy seems to be the best treatment. Based on a well-illustrated case of extensive maxillary ACC involving the palate, orbit floor, and pterygo-palatine fossa, we discuss the prognosis and the importanc

At the initiative of the Dutch Association of Otolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, in cooperation with the Dutch Institute for Healthcare Improvement (CBO), an evidence-based practice guideline was developed for adenoid and tonsil disorders in secondary care. (Adeno)tonsillectomy ((A)TE) is indicated in children with very frequent recurrent tonsillitis: 7 or more tonsillitises per year or 5 tonsillitises per year in the last 2 years. In children with moderately frequent recurrent tonsillitis, i.e. 4 to 6 tonsillitises per year, an (A)TE can be considered. If an (A)TE is performed under inha

A 33-year-old woman sought medical care at our institution for macroglossia. She had been treated before with tracheostomy and gastrostomy due to an adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the mobile tongue, in clinical stage IVC. She was subjected to total glossectomy with larynx preservation, modified radical dissection of the right neck and of the left supraomohyoid muscle, as well as reconstruction using a free flap from the rectus abdominus. The histological report described a 15x11 cm solid type ACC of the mobile tongue (grade III), with infiltration to adjacent soft tissues, vascular and lymp

The incidence of an adenoid cystic carcinoma on major salivary glands is low, constituting only about 10% to 15% of all parotid malignancies. Cases of delayed metastasis have been reported, but reports of specific renal involvement have not been extensively found. We present the case of a 21-year-old woman with a left renal metastasis from an adenoid cystic carcinoma of the parotid gland that had been surgically treated 7 years previously. The patient underwent successful left radical nephrectomy. During follow-up, the patient developed pulmonary nodules that were metastatic adenoid cystic car

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is the most frequent malignant neoplasm of minor salivary glands (76.5%); it is clinically characterized by slow growth, and its most frequent localization is the hard palate. Histopathologically it presents three patterns, cribriform, tubular and solid; the solid type is related to a poor prognostic contrary to the cribriform type, which has a better prognosis. Surgical excision with wide margins is the treatment of choice, if it metastasizes to lymph nodules, post surgical radiotherapy is recommended. A 19 year-old man presented a recurrent lesion on the dorsum of th

PURPOSE: To report a case of lacrimal gland adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) with an atypical initial presentation and to postulate an anatomical explanation for this unusual biologic behavior.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: An orbital magnetic resonance imaging study of a 58-year-old man who complained of progressive diplopia and orbital discomfort disclosed a soft tissue mass in the left cavernous sinus and orbital apex. The left lacrimal gland and the contiguous bone appeared normal.
RESULTS: Biopsy of the intracranial mass revealed ACC of unknown origin which was judged to b

We report the anaesthetic management of a male neonate with congenital cyst adenoid malformation (CCAM) of the lung who underwent thoracotomy for resection of CCAM 24 h after birth and again at 24 days. The initial operation involved a 10-day admission to a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) requiring ventilation, and was complicated by a pneumothorax. This report concentrates on the anaesthetic management for the second thoracotomy. The combination of intra-operative remifentanil infusion and the use of ultrasound to confirm correct placement of epidural catheter allowed on-table tracheal

We report a child with isolated saggital synostosis where a gradual deterioration of the P100 component of the pattern reversal visual evoked potential recorded during the day was associated with episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep that correlated with periods of ICP spiking. Adenoid-tonsillectomy reversed this deterioration with coincident increase in SaO2 and decreased sleep apnoea.

A 38 year old male patient presented with pain and swelling on left side of nose with mass in left nostril. The other symptoms were nasal obstruction, epistaxisc from left nostril and epiphora from left eye. CT scan showed a mass arising from lateral wall of nose on left side eroding anterior part of medial wall of maxillary sinus. The tumor was excised with wide margin through a lateral rhinotomy approach under general anaesthesia. In histopathologieal examination it was found to be cribriform type of Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma. This case is reported here for its rarit.

Microglandular adenosis (MGA) is a well-recognized, if rare and incompletely characterized, entity in which carcinoma is rarely thought to develop. We report 17 cases in which patterns of adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) coexisted with MGA. Immunocharacterization with beta-catenin, E-cadherin, cytokeratins (AE1/AE3), epithelial membrane antigen, S-100 protein, smooth muscle actin, and vimentin was also performed. Most cases had areas of invasive ACC characterized by its defining dual-lumen types. Some cases of ACC appeared to have expanded glands intermingled within the MGA, whereas in other cas
