Therapeutic management of cutaneous and genital warts.

During their lifetime, at least 10 % of the population will be infected by human papillomaviruses (HPV), clinically characterized by the formation of cutaneous or genital warts. Although warts are ubiquitous, there are no defined treatments. Especially in the first six months, warts frequently resolve without therapeutic intervention. This complicates the interpretation of study data, given that many studies do not differentiate between newly infected patients and those with infections that have persisted for a long time. Similarly, most studies do not take location, size, and thickness of les

Tolerability of Topical Retinoids: Are There Clinically Meaningful Differences Among Topical Retinoids?

BACKGROUND: Topical retinoids are first-line treatment options for acne vulgaris. These drugs, however, produce varying degree of cutaneous irritation within the first few weeks of treatment. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to examine differences in tolerability of topical retinoids and assess whether these differences would be clinically meaningful. METHODS: A PubMed search was performed for sources on topical retinoids in acne vulgaris treatment. Thirty-four clinical studies were analyzed. RESULTS: Thirteen studies had statistically significant results on tolerability of retinoid based on reti

Calcitriol ointment: a review of a topical vitamin D analog for psoriasis.

Topical vitamin D analogs are a safe and effective treatment for psoriasis vulgaris. This is a brief review of calcitriol 3 microg/g ointment in the treatment of psoriasis. Calcitriol has been safely used outside the USA in Europe under the trade name Silkis Ointment for almost a decade in the treatment of psoriasis, and it is currently FDA-approved as Vectical Ointment. Calcitriol 3 microg/g ointment is a synthetic topical vitamin D analog considered to be as effective as other vitamin D analogs but with a better tolerability in sensitive areas.

Transdermal testosterone delivery: testosterone patch and gel.

Testosterone replacement treatment is usually life-long. Fortunately, testosterone administration is relatively safe and until the age of 50 years few side effects are noted with normal doses of testosterone. After the age of 50 years when prostate disease becomes more prevalent, shorter-acting testosterone preparations, allowing a fast reduction of circulating testosterone levels, may be an advantage. Testosterone has an impact on sexual and non-sexual behaviour and short-acting testosterone preparations may be better suited for the initiation of long-term administration allowing the monitori

Transdermal nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate). A review of its pharmacology and therapeutic use.

Nitroglycerin (glyceryl trinitrate) has been used for many years via the sublingual route for treating acute anginal attacks. In recent years transdermal delivery of nitroglycerin has gained popularity for prophylaxis against angina. However, nitrate tolerance appears to be a therapeutic problem with all long-acting nitrates regardless of delivery mechanism, and it occurs in most patients with stable angina treated with continuous 24-hour application of nitroglycerin patches. Since continuous 24-hour plasma concentrations of nitroglycerin do not appear to be desirable, alternative approaches t

Ablative fractional laser resurfacing with topical paromomycin as adjunctive treatment for a recalcitrant cutaneous leishmaniasis wound.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Leishmaniasis is a vector borne disease that can cause disease manifestations that range from localized skin ulceration to lethal visceral disease. With increased global travel, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is becoming more common in developed nations. However, current treatment options are limited. STUDY DESIGN: We report a 16-year-old female who presented with several non-tender, non-healing CL wounds on her bilateral upper and lower extremities. Ablative fractional laser resurfacing (AFR) was used in conjunction with topical paromomycin via laser-assisted delivery

Granuloma faciale: a case report on long-term treatment with topical tacrolimus and dermoscopic aspects.

Granuloma faciale (GF) is an uncommon, benign form of chronic leukocytoclastic vasculitis, which predominantly affects the face and which is notoriously resistant to several therapies. Besides a range of therapeutic modalities, tacrolimus has been recently reported in the successful treatment of GF. Herein we describe the clinical, dermoscopic and histopathological findings in a patient affected by GF and its response to long-term topical treatment with tacrolimus 0.1% cream.

Intralesional Meglumine Antimoniate: Safe, Feasible and Effective Therapy for Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Bolivia.

The standard of care for cutaneous leishmaniasis includes the intramuscular/intravenous administration of pentavalent antimonials that are toxic and poorly tolerated. Primary health care usually lacks trained health staff for the diagnosis and treatment of leishmaniasis in Cochabamba Bolivia. Taking these aspects into account, a Bolivian consortium set out to explore the intralesional administration of meglumine antimoniate to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis during primary care under programmatic conditions. A four-step strategy consisting of clinical training for intralesional treatment and the

Therapeutic effectiveness of calcineurin inhibitors in canine vesicular cutaneous lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Oral and topical calcineurin inhibitors (CIs) have been reported to lead to complete lesion remission in several dogs with vesicular cutaneous lupus erythematosus (VCLE). OBJECTIVES: To report retrospectively on the effectiveness and adverse effects of systemic (ciclosporin) and/or topical (tacrolimus/pimecrolimus) CIs in 11 dogs with VCLE. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were: (i) presence of characteristic annular, polycyclic or serpiginous ulcerations distributed over the groin, axillae and/or ventral abdomen; (ii) a histopathological diagnosis of VCLE (i.e. a lymphocyte-rich inte

Topical Minoxidil and Low-Dose Oral Minoxidil in Onychodystrophy: A Proposed Treatment Algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Onychodystrophy includes diverse nail disorders that may impair function and quality of life. Because nails grow slowly, adjunctive therapies that promote nail growth are of increasing interest. AIM: This review examines the evidence for minoxidil in nail growth and nail disorders and proposes a treatment algorithm for its adjunctive use in onychodystrophy. METHOD: A structured search of PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted on December 10, 2025, using terms related to minoxidil and nails. Records were deduplicated, screened, and appraised by full-text review using the Oxford C

Systemic progesterone therapy--oral, vaginal, injections and even transdermal?

Several medicinal products containing progesterone are in widespread use orally for protection of the endometrium during concurrent oestrogen treatment, and injections or vaginally for support of luteal function during assisted reproduction. These indications have been established in extensive clinical testing programmes. In addition, the results of recent studies and meta-analyses suggest that vaginal progesterone is an effective method for preventing premature births in singleton pregnancies in women with a shortened cervix. In US, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate is licensed to reduce the r

Treatments of tinea pedis.

The severity of tinea pedis infection determines the course of treatment required. Mild infections may be resolved using a topical agent. More severe presentations (eg, dermatophytosis complex) may require treatment that eliminates the bacterial and fungal infection. Some topical monotherapies may exhibit both antifungal and antibacterial activity. In other instances, it may be necessary to combine an antifungal agent with an antibacterial agent. If inflammation is present, an agent with known anti-inflammatory action may need to be used. The chronic presentation of tinea pedis (dry type) some
