The long-term results of using low-concentration atropine eye drops for controlling myopia progression in schoolchildren.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article was to evaluate the long-term efficacy of a low-concentration (LC) atropine eye drop regimen (0.05%-0.1%) for controlling myopia progression in schoolchildren. METHODS: This retrospective, case-control study enrolled myopic schoolchildren who had been followed-up for at least 3 years from 1999 to 2007. Children who received LC doses of atropine eye drops [initial prescription 0.05%, if progression over -0.5 diopter (D) during a 6-month follow-up then changed to 0.1% atropine] every night at bedtime were included in the LC atropine group, and untreated chil

Eye drop propranolol administration promotes the recovery of oxygen-induced retinopathy in mice.

The mouse model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) is a well-established model of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), characterized by the abnormal formation of new blood vessels, which is similar to ROP. In this model, we have recently shown that subcutaneous (sc) administration of the non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor (β-AR) blocker propranolol ameliorates angiogenic processes in the retina when its effects are evaluated at postnatal day (PD) 17. In the present study, we investigated whether propranolol application as collyrium can promote the recovery of OIR. After propranolol administr

Ophthalmic herpes zoster with severe complications in an immunocompromised patient: A case report and review of the literature.

The increasing incidence for herpes zoster, including its ophthalmic form, is based on physiological (senescence) and acquired immunosuppression, particularly under oncologic treatment. The immunocompromised status of the patient favors the appearance of severe complications. The patient, aged 54, with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, presented 1 week from the onset with an erythematous, vesicular-bullous rash on the right trigeminal nerve's ophthalmic dermatome, marked edema, intense pain and large submandibular ganglion masses. There were cutaneous (necrotic ulcerations superinfected with methi

Temozolomide-associated blepharoconjunctivitis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Temozolomide (TMZ) is an effective oral alkylating agent used in treating glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) and high-grade gliomas. It works by introducing methyl groups into DNA, inhibiting cell division. A case of blepharoconjunctivitis linked to the administration of TMZ is detailed in this report. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 58-year-old African-American man diagnosed with GBM. Following adjuvant TMZ treatment, he developed blepharoconjunctivitis, characterized by eyelid and conjunctival inflammation. Symptoms included eyelid swelling, crusting, and conjunctival disch

Amaurosis, ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, mydriasis and periorbital blanching following inferior alveolar nerve anaesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Ophthalmic complications following inferior alveolar nerve anaesthesia are rare. They include transient blindness (amaurosis), ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, mydriasis and diplopia. These events may occur following the intravascular administration of anaesthetic solution and are distressing to both patient and operator alike. CASE REPORT: We report the unusual case of a young patient who experienced amaurosis, total ophthalmoplegia, complete upper eyelid ptosis, mydriasis and periorbital blanching following inferior alveolar nerve anaesthesia. Similar but less profound signs were observ

Cyclodextrins as multifunctional supramolecular carriers in ocular drug delivery.

Topical and non-invasive ocular drug delivery remains challenged by the rapid precorneal clearance, ocular epithelial and blood-retinal barriers, and poor aqueous solubility resulting in less than 5% bioavailability. Often, there is requirement for irritant cosolvents or invasive intravitreal routes of administration. Cyclodextrins (CDs) have been known to improve solubility, but the supramolecular aspects of CDs have not been fully incorporated into the treatment of various diseases. In this review, the supramolecular aspects of CDs as drug delivery systems are discussed, with the emphasis be
