The prevalence of iodine deficiency disorders and the thyroid status of the population were studied in an endemic goitre area in Algeria. In order to determine the embryotoxic and teratogenic potential of aluminum, pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were treated by gavage with a daily dose of 180, 360, or 720 mg/kg of aluminum nitrate from the sixth through to the fourteenth day of gestation. Plasma concentrations of morphine were studied in 16 patients with chronic pain due to advanced cancer, treated with regular doses of morphine chloride by the oral route. One case of hepatic adenoma is reported. The tumour occurred after seven years of uninterrupted use of anticonceptive pills and caused fatal abdominal haemorrhage. The adenoma had a connective tissue capsule and regular lobular structure in which at some area peliosis could be observed. Different types of antigens collected from adult Nippostrongylus brasiliensis were used to vaccinate rats against this parasite: somatic worm homogenate, secretory antigens and whole fixed worms. After challenge infection there was a significant reduction of worm number in immunized rats. However, vaccination with secretory antigens only induced a high level of immunity, indicating that protective antigens were probably worm metabolites.
