Receipt of Recommended Adolescent Vaccines Among Youth With Special Health Care Needs.

We examined vaccination coverage among youth with special health care needs (YSHCN) using data from parents of adolescents (11-17 years) who responded to a statewide survey in 2010-2012 (n = 2156). Using a validated screening tool, we identified 29% of adolescents as YSHCN. Weighted multivariable logistic regression assessed associations between special health care needs and receipt of tetanus booster, meningococcal, and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. Only 12% of youth had received all 3 vaccines, with greater coverage for individual vaccines (tetanus booster, 91%; meningococcal, 32%; HP

Staff needs when working in secure forensic child and adolescent mental health.

There is increasing recognition regarding the psychological impact of working in demanding healthcare settings. However, little empirical research has been conducted, especially within a child and adolescent setting. This study investigates the needs of staff working with adolescents in a secure forensic psychiatric environment. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 13 staff members within a secure forensic unit for adolescents with mental health problems. The interviews were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Participants encountered varying experiences, both pos

A pilot survey of the impact of menstrual cycles on adolescent health.

BACKGROUND: The experience of menstruation and reproductive health by adolescent girls has been poorly studied in New Zealand. AIMS: To develop and pilot a Web-based survey of 16-year-olds' experience of menstruation and reproductive health with the eventual objective of conducting a larger population-based survey. A secondary aim was to report on the experience of menstrual and reproductive health in a group of 16-year-old girls in an urban setting. METHODS: A Web-based survey was developed and tested in 2006 with assistance of a multidisciplinary advisory group. The final version of the qu

Compliance with return appointments for reproductive health care among adolescent Norplant users.

PURPOSE: Norplant's long duration of action may result in users being less motivated than non-users to return for reproductive health care appointments. This study determined compliance with scheduled return appointments among adolescents using Norplant and those using other methods of contraception. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of all teenagers (age < or = 18 years) who received Norplant between June 1991 and August 1993, as well as those of a comparison group of adolescents, matched for age and race, using other methods of contraception. Subjects receiving Norplant were

The interplay of family support and family incivility on adolescent mental health.

Both positive and negative family interactions are closely associated with adolescent mental health. Using an integrated point of view, this study used a longitudinal design to examine the interplay patterns of family support and family incivility on adolescent mental health. Two waves of data were collected from 999 Chinese high school students. Polynomial regressions and response surface analyses were used to examine interplay patterns of family support and incivility, specifically, their congruence effect and incongruence effect on mental health outcomes, including well-being (life satisfac

The links between adolescent health and education: pathways, impacts and economic modelling.

Health and education are interdependent pillars of human capital development, yet they are often treated in isolation within policy and economic models. This study presents a conceptual and empirical framework that integrates health and education interventions to assess their joint impact on educational attainment, population health, productivity, and economic development. Using a human capital approach, the study models the effects of four school-based health interventions-nutrition, deworming, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), and mental health programmes-on education outcomes in 75 low

Urban heat stress and adolescent health: impacts and adaptation strategies in Indonesia.

Climate change adversely affects adolescent health through extreme outdoor heat, causing dehydration, cognitive impairment, chronic health risks, and potentially fatal heat stroke. Adolescents' high levels of physical activity and limited awareness about the impacts of extreme outdoor heat exacerbate these risks, highlighting the need for effective adaptation strategies. However, comprehensive studies on the physical and mental effects of heat exposure, adaptation practices adopted by adolescents, psychological determinants, microclimatic perceptions, and ambient-natural conditions remain limi…
