Effect of maternal age on maternal and neonatal outcomes after assisted reproductive technology.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of maternal age on assisted reproductive technology (ART) and spontaneous conception (SC) pregnancies regar … livery, PTB, LBW, and SGA changed significantly with age. The AORs for adverse neonatal outcomes at advanced maternal age (>35 years) showed a greater increase in SC than in ART. The change in risk with age did not differ between ART and SC for maternal outcomes at advanced maternal age. CONCLUSION(S): Having singleton conceptions after ART results in higher maternal …

Maternal age at first cesarean delivery related to adverse pregnancy outcomes in a second cesarean delivery: a multicenter, historical, cross-sectional cohort study.

BACKGROUND: To determine the effects of maternal age at first cesarean on maternal complications and adverse outcomes of pregnancy with the … with the reference group (aged 25-29 years). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal age between 18 and 24 years or advanced maternal age at first cesarean was an independent risk factor for adverse maternal outcomes with the second cesarean. Advanced maternal age at the first cesarean specifically increased adverse neonatal outcomes with the second. Therefore, decisions as to whether …

Effect of maternal age on the risk of preterm birth: A large cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal age at pregnancy is increasing worldwide as well as preterm birth. However, the association between prematurity and advanced maternal age remains controversial. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of maternal age on the occurrence of preterm birth after controlling for multiple known confounders in a large birth cohort. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study using data from the QUARISMA study, a large Canadian randomized controlled trial, which collected data from 184,000 births in 32 hospitals. Inclusion criteria were maternal age over 20 years. Exclusion criteria were …

Aneuploidy Patterns and Chaotic Embryos in IVF: Age-Stratified Analysis and Re-Biopsy Outcomes from a Romanian Cohort.

Background and Objectives: Aneuploidy is the leading cause of implantation failure and miscarriage, with prevalence increasing with maternal age. Embryos classified as chaotic, characterized by the presence of five or more chromosomal abnormalities, and those with complex aneuploidies, defined by two to four abnormalities, represent a controversial category in preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A), as the potential for misclassification remains a significant concern. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective study at the Calla IVF Center, Oradea, analyzing 230 blasto

Advanced parental age: Is it contributing to an increased incidence of non-syndromic craniosynostosis? A review of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis (CS) is a congenital birth defect characterized by the premature fusion of one or several calvarial suture(s). CS could lead to serious complications, such as intracranial hypertension and neurodevelopmental impairment. There is an increasing trend in the prevalence of CS - 75% of which are of non-syndromic type (NSCS). In parallel, there is a steady rise in the average maternal age. The goal of this paper was to review the literature to clearly identify any associations between parental age and NSCS. This review was performed and reported in compliance with PRISMA

Frequencies of chromosomal abnormalities at amniocentesis: over 20 years of cytogenetic analyses in one laboratory.

Prenatal diagnosis of chromosomal disorders has been performed for more than 20 years, mainly for advanced maternal age. Chromosomal abnormality rates derived from second trimester amniocentesis have mainly come from a collection of small-scale studies from North America and Western Europe. Accurate risk estimates for chromosomal abnormalities are important tools for the physician or obstetrician who would need to make referrals to a prenatal genetic center. This paper presents amniocentesis rates of clinically significant cytogenetic abnormalities for various indications, including advanced m…

Risk Assessment of Adverse Birth Outcomes in Relation to Maternal Age.

BACKGROUND: Although a number of studies have investigated correlations of maternal age with birth outcomes, an extensive assessment using age as a continuous variable is lacking. In the current study, we estimated age-specific risks of adverse birth outcomes in childbearing women. METHOD: National population-based data containing maternal and neonatal information were derived from the Health Promotion Administration, Taiwan. A composite adverse birth outcome was defined as at least anyone of stillbirth, preterm birth, low birth weight, macrosomia, neonatal death, congenital anomaly, and smal

Stillbirth rate trends across 25 European countries between 2010 and 2021: the contribution of maternal age and multiplicity.

Stillbirth rates have stalled or increased in some European countries during the last decade. We investigate to what extent time-trends and between-country differences in stillbirth rates are explained by the changing prevalence of advanced maternal age and teenage pregnancies or multiple births. We analysed data on stillbirths and live births by maternal age and multiplicity from 2010 to 2021 in 25 European countries using Kitagawa decomposition to separate rate differences into compositional and rate components. Rates significantly decreased in six countries, but increased in two. Changes in…

Effect of arsenite, maternal age, and embryonic sex on spina bifida, exencephaly, and resorption rates in the splotch mouse.

BACKGROUND: This study examines interactions of a mutation in Pax3, embryonic sex, advanced maternal age, and arsenite exposure in the splotch (Sp) mouse model, with the aim of describing gene-environment interactions for neural tube defects and embryonic lethality. METHODS: Splotch heterozygous C57BL/6J mice were crossed to produce offspring of three genotypes with a common maternal genotype that were exposed to either sodium arsenite on gestational day (GD) 8.0, or advanced maternal age (dams older than 12 months). Embryos were extracted on GD 12 and genotyped for both Pax3 and sex. RESULT…

Influence of paternal age on perinatal outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is an increasing trend to delay childbearing to advanced parental age. Increased risks of advanced maternal age and assisted reproductive technologies are widely accepted. There are limited data regarding advanced paternal age. To adequately counsel patients on risk, more research regarding advanced paternal age is necessary. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the influence of paternal age on perinatal outcomes, and to assess whether this influence differs between pregnancies achieved spontaneously and those achieved with assisted reproductive technology. Association of decreased paternal age and late-onset Alzheimer's disease. An example of genetic imprinting?

Several studies have identified advanced maternal age as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. This study evaluated maternal and paternal age at birth of 237 patients with Alzheimer's disease, each of whom was matched to five control subjects based on sex, year of birth, survival age, and location of residence. It was found that decreased paternal age substantially increased the susceptibility to the common form of Alzheimer's disease that occurs after the age of 67 years, whereas advanced maternal age had a negligible effect on risk of Alzheimer's disease. The higher incidence of late-onset …
