Evaluation of advanced practice provider related return visits to a pediatric emergency department and their outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While multiple studies have evaluated physician-related return visits (RVs) to a pediatric emergency department (PED) limited data exists for Advanced Practice Provider (APP)-related RVs, hence our study aimed to evaluate APP-related RVs and their outcomes in a PED. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 72-h RVs where clinical care was independently provided by an APP during the index visit from January 2018 to December 2019. We extracted patient demographics, index and return visits' characteristics and outcomes. Reasons for RVs were categorized as progression of illnes

Disseminating an evidence-based course to teach self-management of auditory hallucinations.

This multi-site project extended course dissemination of the 10-session Behavioral Management of Auditory Hallucinations Course to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) mental health outpatient settings. The VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) model and Rogers' theory of diffusion of innovations served as the theoretical framework. The course was taught to mental health professionals using teleconferencing, electronic media, and monthly conference calls across 24 VA mental health outpatient sites. Twenty course leaders provided feedback. One hundred percent reported being bet

Achieving door-to-balloon times in less than 90 minutes. Development of a flow chart.

The use of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for patients presenting with an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in less than 90 minutes has shown to significantly reduce mortality and morbidity. In 2006, the American College of Cardiology launched a national door-to-balloon initiative to "take the extraordinary performance of a few hospitals and make it the ordinary performance of every hospital." The purpose of this article is to present an advanced practice nurse's attempt to change practice and the challenges faced when attempted to improve upon a system. A flow chart

Facilitating Culturally Safe Conversations Around Substance Use Disorder and Contraception to Provide Inclusive Care for Neurodiverse and Neurotypical Populations.

Nurses are vital to facilitating patient-centered discussions on alcohol use, substance use, and contraception, yet they face significant barriers to effective communication, including time constraints, stigma, and implicit bias. This article presents an inclusive framework to support culturally safe, patient-centered dialogue, with attention to neurodiverse populations, including those with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Drawing on the Model of the Five Principles of Cultural Safety and the Respectful Maternity Care Framework and Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline from the Associat

Providing quality care to the sexual assault survivor: education and training for medical professionals.

Health care providers who perform sexual assault examinations can assist patients who report experiencing a sexual assault by increasing their knowledge and skills in sexual assault care, and serving as Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) coordinators, or as SART team members, in their communities. With little additional material, this training could be provided as a component of basic midwifery and/or advanced practice nursing education programs. This article reviews the essential steps and required training for conducting sexual assault examinations.

A 21-year-old white woman diagnosed with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis related to oral contraceptive and Factor V Leiden.

Empirical research has established the fact that the use of oral contraceptives in young women with the Factor V Leiden mutation increases the relative risk of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a rare cerebral vascular injury whose ambiguous presentation contributes to delayed and often-inaccurate diagnosis. This case report presents a 21-year-old White woman with a severe headache who presented to the emergency department and was diagnosed with cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. The purpose of this article is to educate advanced practice emergency care nurse

Impact of Virtual Reality Mental Health Nursing Simulation on Nursing Students' Competence.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of a Virtual Reality (VR)-based Mental Health Nursing Practice Simulation (MHNPS) on nursing students' competency in caring for individuals with mental disorders. Nursing students often face fear, anxiety, and helplessness during mental health (MH) rotations, impeding the attainment of learning objectives in the MH nursing practicum. Therefore, innovative strategies offering practice opportunities are crucial for their competence development. METHODS: Using a one-group pretest-posttest repeated measures experimental design, 50 nursing students, havi

Academic partnerships with clinical nurse scientist mentors improve the Doctor of Nursing Practice student experience.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree has become firmly established as the terminal practice degree for advanced practice registered nurses in the United States. A defining component of the DNP curriculum requires students to implement a scholarly project that addresses a clinical problem and improves patient or system outcomes. This article describes the development and implementation of a structured clinical-academic partnership between a university-based DNP nurse anesthesia program and a pediatric health care organization in the southeastern United States. Central to this collaborati

Simulation-based learning in palliative care in postgraduate nursing education: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Nurses require advanced competence in palliative care, but they face wide variations in education and a shortage in opportunities for clinical placement. Simulation-based learning (SBL) can enable students to develop clinical skills, critical thinking and confidence. No scoping reviews to date have mapped the use of SBL in palliative care within postgraduate nursing education. METHODS: The aim of this scoping review was to systematically map published studies on the use of SBL in palliative care in postgraduate nursing education. A scoping review was conducted using Arksey and O'M

A discourse analysis of debates surrounding the entry of nursing into higher education in Ireland.

BACKGROUND: It was only at the start of the 21st century that the nursing profession in Ireland gained full entry to the academy, joining the ranks of the graduate professions in healthcare. Up to that time, the system of professional training of nurses in Ireland was based on the apprenticeship-training model. AIM: This paper critically analyses discourses opposing advanced educational preparation for nurses and the entry of nursing to higher education in order to reveal the discursive work they perform. METHODS: The study analyses historical and contemporary texts using a critical discursi

Translating a Nurse-Led Coping-Sleep-Adherence Bundle Into Routine Cardiovascular Care: A Theory-Informed Implementation Blueprint.

BACKGROUND: Adults with cardiovascular disease frequently experience anxiety, sleep disturbance, and challenges with long-term treatment adherence. These factors are associated with poorer quality of life, reduced engagement in guideline-directed therapy, and increased healthcare utilization. Although nurses are well-positioned to address these needs, nurse-led behavioral interventions often encounter barriers to sustained adoption in routine clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to describe a theory-informed implementation blueprint for integrating a nurse-led coping-sleep-ad

Nonsuicidal Self-Injury: A Nurse-Led Quality Improvement Project to Address Self-Harm.

Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors, such as cutting, scratching, or more severe injuries, are frequently comorbid with neurodevelopmental, intellectual, trauma, personality, and major depressive disorders, complicating treatment and placing added care burdens on hospital nursing staff and advanced practice nurses. Although specific psychopharmacological treatment guidelines and approved medications for NSSI are non-existent, patients are treated with medications approved for co-morbid disorders and behavioral interventions targeting intrapersonal (poor emotional self-regulation) and inte

How nurses address psychosocial needs in patients with advanced heart or lung failure: a qualitative interview study.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced heart failure or lung failure often experience significant changes in psychosocial needs, which may affect their quality of life, emotional wellbeing, and daily functioning. Although nurses are well-positioned to address these needs, there is limited understanding of their perspective on these conversations. Therefore, this study aimed to explore how nurses approach and experience addressing changes in psychosocial needs of patients with advanced heart failure (NYHA stage III or IV) or lung failure (GOLD 3 or 4).
