SCOPE: Aflatoxin exposure coincides with micronutrient deficiencies in developing countries. Animal feeding studies have postulated that aflatoxin exposure may be exacerbating micronutrient deficiencies. Evidence available in human subjects is limited and inconsistent. The effects of prolonged oral administration of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and fumonisin B1 (FB1) mycotoxins were evaluated in broiler chickens from 21 to 42 d of age. A total of 192 birds were housed in experimental batteries and assigned to 32 cages, 6 birds per cage. The following treatments were applied: 1) 0 mycotoxins (control), 2) 10 mg of FB1, 3) 50 microg of AFB1, 4) 50 microg of AFB1 + 10 mg of FB1, 5) 350 microg of AFB1, 6) 350 microg of AFB1 + 10 mg of FB1, 7) 2,450 microg of AFB1, 8) 2,450 microg of AFB1 + 10 mg of FB1/kg of feed. The effects of feeding dietary cadmium (83 micrograms/g of diet) to young pigs on the distributions of copper, iron, and zinc in urine samples and in kidney, liver, and muscle tissues was determined. The role of adrenocorticotropin, cortisol, and corticosterone on chemical carcinogenesis was investigated using the rat aflatoxin B1 hepatocarcinoma model. Diets containing either 49.5% or 32% casein or fish protein concentrate (FPC) were fed to young rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) for 12 months. Five levels [0, 2, 6, 18, and 54 parts per billion (ppb)] of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) were given in each of four different diets.
