Trade-off between soot and NO emissions during enclosed spray combustion of jet fuel.

Aviation emissions of soot and nitrogen oxides are strictly regulated as they adversely impact human health and the environment. Jet fuel combustion conditions that decrease one pollutant concentration increase the other. Although it is not impossible to achieve both low soot and NOx through clever design, it is hard to simultaneously reduce both. Although it is difficult to study such conditions due to high temperatures and gas flowrates of aircraft engines, recently it was shown that Enclosed Spray Combustion (ESC) of jet fuel results in soot with similar characteristics to that from aircraf…

The effects of long-term aerobic conditioning on +Gz tolerance.

Aerobic conditioning programs for aircrews of high performance fighter type aircraft are very important in assuring optimum fitness and health. The aerobic conditioning resulting from running alters the physiologic state of the individual, and whether or not this alteration affects +Gz tolerance is unknown. In this study, 27 long-term (2 years of running) aerobically conditioned subjects were tested for gradual (1 G x 15 s-1) and rapid onset (1 G x s-1) +Gz tolerance. Maximum VO2 and percent body fat measurements were also performed and correlated to the +Gz-tolerance measurements. Although be…

Indirect flight of an African bat to Israel: an example of the potential for zoonotic pathogens to move between continents.

The transmission of harmful pathogens during commercial air flights is an increasing health concern. A potential, yet relatively overlooked source of zoonotic infectious diseases involves collisions of birds and bats with aircraft and long distance transport of their carcasses. We report a case of aerial transportation of the remains of an African fruit bat over three continents, following a collision with an aircraft, and demonstrate the relative ease with which zoonotic pathogens, such as rabies virus or other viruses associated with bats, may cross national boundaries and continents even. I…

Hearing and para-airport children.

Audiometric screening was carried out on 3,322 elementary and high school students living in the vicinity of Logan International Airport, Boston, in an effort to determine whether noise from aircraft had any measurable effect on their hearing. Followup examinations and additional data on children failing the screening examination made it possible to classify the hearing losses as conductive, sensorineural, or mixed. The incidence of bilateral sensorineural or mixed hearing loss in the group living directly under flight paths or immediately adjacent to runways was not significantly different fr…

A comparison between monitoring and dispersion modeling approaches to assess the impact of aviation on concentrations of black carbon and nitrogen oxides at Los Angeles International Airport.

Aircraft activity and airport operations can increase combustion-related air pollutant concentrations, but it is difficult to distinguish aviation emissions from traffic and other local sources. Emission inventories are uncertain and dispersion models may not capture aircraft plume complexity; ambient monitoring data require detailed statistical analyses to extract aviation signals. The goal of this study is to compare two modeling approaches including monitoring-based regression models and the EDMS/AERMOD dispersion model, informing improvements and allowing quantitation of aviation impacts o…

Quantifying Methane and Ozone Precursor Emissions from Oil and Gas Production Regions across the Contiguous US.

We present an updated fuel-based oil and gas (FOG) inventory with estimates of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from oil and natural gas production in the contiguous US (CONUS). We compare the FOG inventory with aircraft-derived ("top-down") emissions for NOx over footprints that account for ∼25% of US oil and natural gas production. Across CONUS, we find that the bottom-up FOG inventory combined with other anthropogenic emissions is on average within ∼10% of top-down aircraft-derived NOx emissions. We also find good agreement in the trends of NOx from drilling- and production-phase activities, …

Helmet-Mounted display cues enhance visual acquisition of mid-air collision hazards beyond using head-up displays alone.

OBJECTIVE: This study undertook an experimental comparison of visual acquisition for the avoidance of Mid-Air Collisions (MAC) when using cueing provided by Head-Up Display (HUD) and Helmet-Mounted Display (HMD) symbology. BACKGROUND: Previous work has shown that providing accurate cueing can improve visual detection performance, but no study had quantified the impact of providing cues via a HMD to reduce MAC risk. METHOD: Military fast jet pilots flew two scenarios in a Virtual Reality (VR) simulation. In one, a HUD provided cues to nearby aircraft. In the other, a HMD was used alongside th…

Use of the Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System in the MD902: a fire safety assessment.

BACKGROUND: The Lund University Cardiopulmonary Assist System (LUCAS) is a gas-driven mechanical cardiopulmonary resuscitation device. If oxygen is used as the driving gas in a confined environment, there is a potential fire hazard. 24% oxygen is considered the threshold for increased risk. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: Three trials were conducted using different cabin ventilation settings to determine the rise in oxygen concentration in an MD902 helicopter during use of the LUCAS. RESULTS: The oxygen concentration rose rapidly with the aircraft at rest, but during flight, using realistic cabin ven…

Prevention of carbon monoxide exposure in general and recreational aviation.

Carbon monoxide exposure is an important public health issue that poses a significant, albeit uncommon risk in aviation. Exposure is most common in single engine piston-driven aircraft where air is passed over the exhaust manifold to serve as cabin heat. Effective primary prevention of this exposure is the regular inspection and maintenance of aircraft exhaust systems, as required by law. For situations at special risk should exposure occur, and where there is concern for the public safety, installation of active warning devices for CO intrusion into cockpits may improve secondary prevention. …

Tuberculosis on the flight deck.

Tuberculosis in commercial aircraft has been a concern since a 1995 incident of possible transmission from an active case of tuberculosis to passengers in the cabin of a 747. Subsequently, commercial air carriers have been vigilant in cooperating with public health authorities in tracking all known exposures to tuberculosis. In 1998, a pilot of a commercial airliner was diagnosed with active tuberculosis. Company records demonstrated that in the previous 6 mo, the pilot had flown with 48 other pilots. Every exposed pilot was contacted and evaluated by skin testing (IPPD) or chest x-ray if prev…

Aortic valve replacement in a United States Air Force pilot: case report and literature review.

We report the first case of a United States Air Force pilot returned to flying status after cardiac valve replacement. A 34-yr-old C-130 pilot underwent placement of an aortic valve homograft as a result of an episode of acute bacterial endocarditis on a bicuspid aortic valve. After a period of observation and a careful evaluation, he was returned to flying status in low-G aircraft. While cardiac valve replacement has traditionally been considered disqualifying for military aviation duties, aortic valve homografts have been associated with a lower morbidity and a significantly improved prognos…

[Thoracic injuries in the field of aviation medicine].

In civil and war traumatology, 33% of deaths are due to chest traumas although this involves only 25% of cases. Examination of the physiopathy clinical medicine and treatment of the various traumatic lesions of the chest and their complications shows that rapid transfer of such patients to suitable places of treatment following adequate first aid is indispensable. The use of fully equipped aircraft is thus vital. Transport criteria are dictated by the environment, first aid resources, meterorological conditions, cruising altitude, available equipment [an automatic respirator and aspirator are …

The "respiratory envelope", an aviation-inspired framework for patient tailored mechanical ventilation.

Contemporary mechanical ventilation strategies in ARDS rely on lung-protective ventilation approaches that typically utilize separate static … oundaries as a function of multiple dimensions (e.g. flight speed, altitude, (dynamic) loads on the aircraft) within which an aircraft can operate. When a new aircraft is developed, its operational safety envelope is determined analytically. Calculations are quickly followed by flight simulations and flight testing, beginning from a known safe point within …
