From intersectional position to migrant standpoint: Ghanaian migrants' knowledges of wellbeing, care, and constraint in Alberta, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Intersectionality has strengthened migration scholarship by showing how race, gender, class, legal status, culture, and other relations of power shape migrant lives. However, it has been less explicit about how migration-shaped locations become sites of interpretation, critique, and knowledge production. This article addresses that gap by developing the concept of migrant standpoint through the case of mental health promotion among Ghanaians in Alberta, Canada. METHODS: The study used a qualitative design grounded in Ori-Oyena, an African-grounded methodological orientation cent…

Women's health workforce and outpatient care delivery in Alberta: Evidence from 26 years of population-based data.

BACKGROUND: Many female-specific health services in Canada are delivered by obstetrician-gynecologists and family physicians. However, little is known about how patterns of care delivery, physician workforce supply, and patient characteristics have changed over time, limiting evidence-informed workforce and health system planning. OBJECTIVE: To examine long-term trends in outpatient women's health service delivery, physician workforce supply, and patient characteristics in Alberta and identify implications for workforce planning, access, and health system reform. METHODS: This population-bas…

A Comprehensive Systematic Well-to-Refinery Carbon Intensity Assessment of Technoeconomically Viable CO2-EOR Operations in Alberta.

Carbon dioxide-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) in Alberta offers dual economic and carbon management benefits, with the potential to store 1.1 billion tons of CO2 in oil fields while supporting infrastructure for future saline aquifer storage. Despite this promise, greenhouse gas emissions from large-scale CO2-EOR deployment have not been well characterized. This study evaluates the well-to-refinery gate (WtR) emissions of Alberta's CO2-EOR operations through an integrated technoeconomic and life cycle assessment of 13,948 field-pools from the provincial database. A total of 2950 technically v…

Using health service data to understand unregulated toxic drug deaths in Alberta (2018-2023): an ecological study.

INTRODUCTION: Ten years into the most acute phase of the toxic drug crisis in Canada, trends in drug-related deaths remain poorly understood. This is hindered by delayed reporting of drug deaths in some provinces, including Alberta. We used publicly available emergency medical services (EMS) and supervised consumption site (SCS) utilization data to examine their associations with drug poisoning deaths to assess if these measures could serve as reliable proxies for fatalities to support evidence-based public health responses. METHODS: Data on Alberta-wide EMS dispatches for opioid poisoning, A…

Social context influences Toxoplasma gondii and Trichinella spp. infection in Alberta free-roaming wild pigs (Sus scrofa).

The increasing spread of wild pigs across Canada is concerning due to their potential role as reservoirs for zoonotic diseases, including trichinosis and toxoplasmosis. Trichinosis is caused by the parasitic nematode Trichinella spp. and can manifest clinically in humans. Likewise, the intracellular protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii is a significant global foodborne and waterborne parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis. Despite wild pigs being recognized globally as reservoirs for T. gondii and Trichinella spp., the status of wild pigs in Alberta remains undetermined. Wild pig diaphragms we…

High-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem-cell transplantation for relapsed metastatic germ cell tumors The Alberta experience.

INTRODUCTION: High-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem-cell transplantation (HDC-ASCT) is standard therapy for metastatic germ cell tumors (mGCTs) in patients whose disease progresses during or after conventional chemotherapy. We conducted a retrospective review of HDC-ASCT in relapsed mGCT patients in the province of Alberta, Canada, over the past two decades. METHODS: Patients with mGCTs who received HDC-ASCT at two provincial cancer referral centers from 2000-2018 were identified from institutional databases. Baseline clinical and treatment characteristics were collected, as well as ove…

A population-based analysis of rheumatology care patterns for inflammatory arthritis during COVID-19 in Alberta, Canada.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on inflammatory arthritis (IA) rheumatology care in Alberta, Canada. METHODS: We used linked provincial health administrative datasets to establish an incident cohort of individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) seen at least once by a rheumatologist. We examined incidence rates (IR) per 100,000 population, and patterns of follow-up care between 2011 and 2022. In a subset of individuals diagnosed five years prior to the pandemic, we report on those …

Incidence, treatment, and outcomes of isoniazid mono-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections in Alberta, Canada from 2007-2017.

Isoniazid resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Hr-TB) is the most frequently encountered TB resistance phenotype in North America but limited data exist on the effectiveness of current therapeutic regimens. Ineffective treatment of Hr-TB increases patient relapse and anti-mycobacterial resistance, specifically MDR-TB. We undertook a multi-centre, retrospective review of culture-positive Hr-TB patients in Alberta, Canada (2007-2017). We assessed incidence and treatment outcomes, with a focus on fluoroquinolone (FQ)-containing regimens, to understand the risk of unsuccessful outcomes. Rates of …

Impact of Lesion Load Thresholds on Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomographic Score in Diffusion-Weighted Imaging.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Assessment of ischemic lesions on computed tomography or MRI diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) using the Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (ASPECTS) is widely used to guide acute stroke treatment. However, it has never been defined how many voxels need to be affected to label a DWI-ASPECTS region ischemic. We aimed to assess the effect of various lesion load thresholds on DWI-ASPECTS and compare this automated analysis with visual rating. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed overlap of individual DWI lesions of 315 patients from the previously published …

Developing a research-specific emergency management programme for municipal resilience following the 2013 flood in southern Alberta.

Calgary was significantly impacted by the southern Alberta floods in 2013. Prior to the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires (also in Alberta), these floods were the costliest disaster in Canadian history. In the aftermath, the Conference Board of Canada's independent review of the overall performance of Calgary's Recovery Operations Centre (ROC) recommended the need to: (1) include community actors and external stakeholders; and (2) develop pre-event situational awareness for those citizens who lack the ability to request assistance through regular channels. In response to these findings and a seemin…

Salmonella enteritidis infections associated with foods purchased from mobile lunch trucks--Alberta, Canada, October 2010-February 2011.

During October 2010-February 2011, an outbreak of 91 Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) infections in Alberta, Canada, was investigated by a local public health department (Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone). Index cases initially were linked through a common history of consumption of food purchased from mobile food-vending vehicles (lunch trucks) operating at worksites in Alberta. Further investigation implicated one catering company that supplied items for the lunch trucks and other vendors. In 85 cases, patients reported consumption of food prepared by the catering company in the 7 days before…

Characterization of antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes in Enterococcus spp. isolated from retail meats in Alberta, Canada.

The objective of this study was to characterize antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and virulence genotypes of Enterococcus spp. particularly Enterococcus faecalis isolated from retail meats purchased (2007-2008) in Alberta, Canada. Unconditional statistical associations between AMR pheno- and genotypes and virulence genotypes were determined. A total of 532 enterococci comprising one isolate from each positive sample were analyzed for antimicrobial susceptibility. A customized enterococcal microarray was used for species identification and the detection of AMR and virulence genes. E. faecalis was …

Clinical utility of commercial enzyme immunoassays during the inaugural season of West Nile virus activity, Alberta, Canada.

West Nile virus (WNV) has spread rapidly across North America, creating a need for rapid and accurate laboratory diagnosis on a large scale. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) capture enzyme immunoassays (EIA) became commercially available in the summer of 2003, but limited data are available on their clinical performance. Consolidated human WNV diagnostic testing for the province of Alberta, Canada, at the public health laboratory permitted a large-scale evaluation of the assays, covering a wide clinical spectrum. Two thousand nine hundred sixty-nine sera were tested, from 2,553 Alberta residents, and 26…

Decreased incidence of neurologic disability among neonates at high risk born between 1975 and 1984 in Alberta.

We report the outcome at 2 or 3.5 years of 1463 neonates at high risk born between 1975 and 1984 and cared for in a regional perinatal program in Alberta. Although the number of surviving infants of very low birth weight (1250 g or less) increased over the study period, the incidence rate of neurologic impairment fell significantly, from 19% to 13% (p less than 0.01), so that there was no significant increase in the absolute number of disabled children. This finding remained valid when two other groups of infants at high risk (those weighing more than 1250 g at birth and having a positive neur…

[Characterization of RNA polymerase activity of highly purified preparations of influenza virus A/duck/Alberta/48/76].

The influenza virus A/duck/Alberta/48/76 with the antigen formula H7N3 (16) and Hav1 Nav2 (WHO nomenclature from 1971) (15), respectively, as well as a nonpathogenic virus of the subtype Hav1 were purified to a high degree by ultracentrifugation in continuous sucrose gradients (15-40% w/w and 20-60% w/w, respectively). The activity of the RNA polymerase of this virus preparation was determined by incorporating 3H-UMP in acid insoluble material following preincubation of the virus with the nonionic detergens Nonidet P-40 for 15 min at 32 degrees C. The influence of different concentrations was …

Government and non-government policy influencers' support for mental health promotion policies in Alberta and Manitoba, Canada.

In Canada, the mental health crisis is an escalating public health concern. Mental health policies, often advocated for and led by government and non-government policy influencers (PIs), are critical in setting the political agenda to improve this issue. Therefore, understanding the views of PIs on mental health-promoting policies may provide insights to policy development priorities. We aim to examine if support for mental health promotion policies varies between Alberta and Manitoba, and between government and non-government PIs. This cross-sectional study was conducted using the 2019 Chroni…
