Stability of Amines with Minerals and Metal Salts in Hydrothermal Fluids.

Amines are key intermediates in biogeochemical nitrogen cycling and are potential precursors to amino acids and other biomolecules in hydrothermal systems on Earth and ocean worlds. While their reactivity and chemistry under high-temperature conditions have been previously studied, far less is known about how inorganic components such as metal ions and minerals influence amine stability and transformation pathways. Here, we investigate the hydrothermal reactivity of three representative amines (benzylamine, cyclohexylamine, and cyclohexylmethylamine) at 250 °C in the presence of Al-, Fe-, Mg-,

Ex Situ Gaseous Reagent for Multicomponent Amine Bioconjugation.

We report a minimalist gaseous sulfonyl-chloride-derived reagent for multicomponent bioconjugation with amine, phenol, or aniline reagents to afford urea or carbamate products. With the utilization of a gas-phase reagent for a reaction mediated by metal ions, a variety of biologically relevant molecules, such as saccharide, poly(ethylene glycol), fluorophore, and affinity tag, can be efficiently cross-linked to the N terminus or lysine side-chain amines on natural polypeptides or proteins.

Reactivity of a Linear 2-Germapropadiene with Acids, Ketones, and Amines.

The reactivity of an isolable 2-germapropadiene with acids, ketones, and amines was investigated. The reactions of 2-germapropagiene 1 with hydrogen chloride and acetic acid afforded the corresponding dichlorogermane (2) and diacetoxygermane (3), respectively, indicating that the central germanium atom of 1 is electrophilic. The reaction of 1 with benzaldehyde proceeds via a formal [2+2] cycloaddition to afford the corresponding spiro compound (4). Moreover, 1 reacts smoothly with acetone to furnish germane 5, which contains a six-membered ring involving two acetone molecules. Furthermore, 1 u

Automated Method for the Sensitive Analysis of Volatile Amines in Seawater.

Methylamines are polar, volatile, and organic nitrogen-containing compounds. They are challenging to analyze, limiting our understanding of their occurrence and role within the marine nitrogen cycle. We describe an automated headspace solid-phase microextraction method, coupled with gas chromatography and nitrogen phosphorus detection (HS-SPME-GC-NPD), for analyzing methylamines in seawater. Three SPME conditions were investigated: temperature, equilibration, and extraction. The method was 6-24 times more sensitive to trimethylamine (TMA) than to dimethylamine (DMA) and monomethylamine (MMA).

Covalent Binding of Reactive Anhydride of Cantharidin to Biological Amines.

Cantharidin is a terpenoid from coleoptera beetles. Cantharidin has been used to treat molluscum contagiosum and some types of tumors. Cantharidin is highly toxic, and cantharidin poisoning and fatal cases have been reported worldwide. The mechanisms underlying cantharidin-induced toxicity remain unclear. Cantharidin contains anhydride, which may react with biologic amines. This study aimed to examine the chemical reactivity of cantharidin toward nucleophiles and characterize adducts of cantharidin with biologic amines in vitro and in mice. Here two types of conjugates were formed in the incub

Antifouling Properties of Amine-Oxide-Containing Zwitterionic Polymers.

Biofouling due to nonspecific proteins or cells on the material surfaces is a major challenge in a range of applications such as biosensors, medical devices, and implants. Even though poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has become the most widely used stealth material in medical and pharmaceutical products, the number of reported cases of PEG-triggered rare allergic responses continues to increase in the past decades. Herein, a new type of antifouling material poly(amine oxide) (PAO) has been evaluated as an alternative to overcome nonspecific foulant adsorption and impart comparable biocompatibility.

Cobalt(II)-Catalyzed Intermolecular Aminocarbonylation of Indoles with Amines.

A cobalt(II)-catalyzed C2-H carbonylation of indoles with amines toward indole-2-carboxamides has been developed. By employing Co(OAc)2·4H2O as an inexpensive catalyst and using benzene-1,3,5-triyl triformate (TFBen) as the CO surrogate, a variety of indole-2-carboxamide derivatives were produced in moderate to high yields. Additionally, several bioactive-molecule-related compounds can be applied as substrates, as well.

Titanium-Mediated Reduction of Carboxamides to Amines with Borane-Ammonia.

In this study, the successful titanium tetrachloride-catalyzed reduction of aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and nitriles with borane-ammonia was extended to the reduction (deoxygenation) of a variety of aromatic and aliphatic pri-, sec- and tert-carboxamides, by changing the stoichiometry of the catalyst and reductant. The corresponding amines were isolated in good to excellent yields, following a simple acid-base workup.

Amine-Impregnated Dendritic Mesoporous Silica for the Adsorption of Formaldehyde.

To adsorb and remove formaldehyde, which is a harmful volatile organic chemical (VOC) detected indoors, an alkylamine was introduced into the substrate as a formaldehyde adsorbent. In this study, Tetraethylenepentaamine (TEPA) was introduced into the mesoporous silica using the amine impregnation method. Since the impregnated alkylamine can block the pores of the silica substrate, the pore size and pore volume are very important factors for its use as a substrate for an adsorbent. Focusing on the substrate's pore properties, Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 (SBA-15) was chosen as a conventional one-

Functional characterization of the biogenic amine transporters on human macrophages.

Monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs) are key players in tissue homeostasis and diseases regulated by a variety of signaling molecules. Recent literature has highlighted the ability for biogenic amines to regulate macrophage functions, but the mechanisms governing biogenic amine signaling in and around immune cells remain nebulous. In the CNS, biogenic amine transporters are regarded as the master regulators of neurotransmitter signaling. While we and others have shown that macrophages express these transporters, relatively little is known of their function in these cells. To address these knowl

3-hydroxy-L-kynurenamine is an immunomodulatory biogenic amine.

Tryptophan catabolism is a major metabolic pathway utilized by several professional and non-professional antigen presenting cells to maintain immunological tolerance. Here we report that 3-hydroxy-L-kynurenamine (3-HKA) is a biogenic amine produced via an alternative pathway of tryptophan metabolism. In vitro, 3-HKA has an anti-inflammatory profile by inhibiting the IFN-γ mediated STAT1/NF-κΒ pathway in both mouse and human dendritic cells (DCs) with a consequent decrease in the release of pro-inflammatory chemokines and cytokines, most notably TNF, IL-6, and IL12p70. 3-HKA has protective effe

Chiral Amplification of Phosphoramidates of Amines and Amino Acids in Water.

The origin of biomolecular homochirality continues to be one of the most fascinating aspects of prebiotic chemistry. Various amplification strategies for chiral compounds to enhance a small chiral preference have been reported, but none of these involves phosphorylation, one of nature's essential chemical reactions. Here we present a simple and robust concept of phosphorylation-based chiral amplification of amines and amino acids in water. By exploiting the difference in solubility of a racemic phosphoramidate and its enantiopure form, we achieved enantioenrichment in solution. Starting with n

Effect of Aromatic Amines on the Properties of Formaldehyde-Based Xerogels.

This study investigates the synthesis of formaldehyde-based xerogels using alternative aromatic precursors, with comparison to traditional resorcinol-formaldehyde analogues, in order to alter the chemical composition of the resulting gels. By replacing resorcinol with aromatic amine molecules, i.e., ammeline, melamine and melem, each expected to undergo similar reactions with formaldehyde as the substituted species, we found that for all substituted gels, at low additive contents, the gel structure was compromised and non-porous materials were formed, as opposed to the most abundant monomers,

Metampicillin is a cyclic aminal produced by reaction of ampicillin with formaldehyde.

Metampicillin is a β-lactam antibiotic that is prepared by the reaction of ampicillin with formaldehyde. Although metampicillin has been studied for treatment of infections in animals and humans, its structure has been unclear. We report NMR studies revealing that metampicillin contains a formaldehyde-derived cyclic aminal. NMR time-course experiments with excess formaldehyde in solution show formation of another product with an additional exocyclic hemiaminal group formed by reaction with the cyclic aminal nitrogen. The exocyclic hemiaminal group is readily removed by reaction with the formal

Stability of amine-functionalized CO2 adsorbents: a multifaceted puzzle.

This review focuses on important stability issues facing amine-functionalized CO2 adsorbents, including amine-grafted and amine-impregnated silicas, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks and carbons. During the past couple of decades, major advances were achieved in understanding and improving the performance of such materials, particularly in terms of CO2 adsorptive properties such as adsorption capacity, selectivity and kinetics. Nonetheless, to pave the way toward commercialization of adsorption-based CO2 capture technologies, in addition to other attributes, adsorbent materials should be stab

Formation of heterocyclic amines during cooking of duck meat.

Heterocyclic amines (HAs) are an important class of food mutagens and carcinogens produced in meat cooked at high temperature. In the present study, the effects of various cooking methods: boiling, microwave cooking, charcoal-grilling, roasting, deep-frying and pan-frying on the formation of HAs in duck breast were studied. The various HAs formed during cooking were isolated by solid-phase extraction and analysed by HPLC. Results showed that both the varieties and contents of HAs and the cooking loss of duck breast increase along with increasing cooking temperature and time. Pan-fried duck bre

Biogenic amines in fish, fish products and shellfish: a review.

Fish, cephalopods and shellfish provide a healthy source of high-quality proteins, essential vitamins, minerals and polyunsaturated fatty acids. The beneficial effects of fish consumption on human health such as protection against coronary heart disease and certain cancer may be offset by fish decomposition and the formation of chemical contaminants such as biogenic amines. There are several toxicological effects of biogenic amines on humans, especially histamine. It is the causative agent of histamine or scombroid fish poisoning which is a significant public health problem. In individuals wit
