Effects of Dog Assisted Therapy for Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: An Exploratory Randomized Controlled Trial.

Effective treatments of highly prevalent stress-related outcomes such as depression and anxiety are understudied in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A randomized controlled trial with baseline, post-intervention, and 10-week follow-up, that explores the effects of animal assisted therapy (AAT) was conducted. In total, 53 adults with ASD with normal to high intelligence were randomized in an intervention (N = 27) versus waiting list control group (N = 26). The remarkable adherence to the therapy program by study participants and the program's clinically relevant effects indicate that

PTEN in Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) is a classical tumor suppressor that antagonizes phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate kinase (PI3K)/AKT signaling. Although there is a strong association of PTEN germline mutations with cancer syndromes, they have also been described in a subset of patients with autism spectrum disorders with macrocephaly characterized by impairments in social interactions and communication, repetitive behavior and, occasionally, epilepsy. To investigate PTEN's role during neurodevelopment and its implication for autism, several conditional Pten knockout mouse models have been

Intestinal perforation associated with indomethacin treatment in premature infants.

Within 9 months we observed intestinal perforations in three very low birth weight (VLBW) infants undergoing indomethacin treatment for symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus (sPDA). The three patients exhibited striking similarities in their clinical courses and predisposing factors. Although clinical and histological criteria did not differentiate the perforations from necrotising enterocolitis (NEC), a well-known entity in premature infants, these events were remarkable to us since we had observed no other cases of NEC in recent years. From animal experiments and pathophysiological data, a ro

Aneurysms in a large colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

This communication reports the findings of a retrospective study of extracranial aneurysms found at necropsy in a large colony of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). Eleven (1.5%) of 730 cases had dissecting, saccular, or fusiform aneurysms of the carotid arteries or aorta. Saccular and fusiform aneurysms were found only in animals that had been fed atherogenic diets, whereas dissecting aneurysms occurred in both normo- and hypercholesterolemic monkeys. Neither the type or location of aneurysms, however, could be predicted by the length of time an animal consumed an atherogenic diet, nor by t

In vitro measurement of respiration of choroid plexus cells in communicating hydrocephalus.

Communicating hydrocephalus occurs as a result of inappropriate CSF production in the circumstance of diminished absorption. Ventricular enlargement does not progress as rapidly as the measured normal production of CSF would suggest. Thus, compensatory mechanisms must exist to respond in some manner to the altered pathophysiology. In this experiment the metabolic activity (O2 consumption) of the choroid plexus cells in animals with communicating hydrocephalus was compared with that of normals. The modified Cartesian diver technique of Zeuthen13 was employed. These preliminary measurements show

A mixed-methods study of community dog management and rabies awareness in Thailand.

Rabies elimination requires coordinated interventions across the human-animal-environment interface, yet sustained progress is often hindered by systemic gaps between dog population management, community engagement, and governance. This study investigated community perceptions and challenges related to rabies prevention and control across high-endemic areas in Thailand. Using a mixed-methods design, secondary provincial quantitative data were integrated with qualitative thematic analysis from 57 stakeholders in high endemic areas, including public health officials, policymakers, NGOs, animal-w

Exploring the Gaps in Practical Ethical Guidance for Animal Welfare Considerations of Field Interventions and Innovations Targeting Dogs and Cats.

Domestic dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) and cats (Felis silvestris catus) are common species targeted by nongovernmental or intergovernmental organizations, veterinarians and government agencies worldwide, for field interventions (e.g., population management, rabies vaccination programs) or innovations (e.g., development of technologies or pharmaceuticals to improve animal welfare). We have a moral responsibility to ensure that the conduct of this work is humane for dogs or cats, and to consider the human communities in which the animals live. Ethical review is widely accepted as being integral

Animal shelters: managing heartworms in resource-scarce environments.

Animal shelters must frequently make difficult decisions regarding the allocation of limited resources to appropriately care for the millions of dogs and cats that enter their doors annually. Insufficient staffing, expertise, and guidance on heartworm management in animal shelters creates significant confusion on how these facilities should appropriately address heartworm infection in dogs and cats. The American Heartworm Society (AHS) issues comprehensive guidelines for the diagnosis, prevention, and management of heartworm infection in pets, but shelters are often unable to fully comply with

Preputial lymphangioma in a stallion: First report.

This short communication describes a case of a 30-year-old stallion with a mass on the base of the penis causing paraphimosis. The patient was submitted to anti-inflammatory and diuretic therapy with no signs of improvement, so 16 days after the lesion was detected, the animal was euthanized. Necropsy was performed, and histopathological assessment of the lesion was conducted. The mass was composed primarily of channels and cavernous structures, lined by elongated cells of vascular origin, located in the preputium. The lesion was diagnosed as a preputial lymphangioma. To the authors' best know

Profiling cellular diversity in sponges informs animal cell type and nervous system evolution.

The evolutionary origin of metazoan cell types such as neurons and muscles is not known. Using whole-body single-cell RNA sequencing in a sponge, an animal without nervous system and musculature, we identified 18 distinct cell types. These include nitric oxide–sensitive contractile pinacocytes, amoeboid phagocytes, and secretory neuroid cells that reside in close contact with digestive choanocytes that express scaffolding and receptor proteins. Visualizing neuroid cells by correlative x-ray and electron microscopy revealed secretory vesicles and cellular projections enwrapping choanocyte micro

The therapeutic lamp: treating small-animal phobias.

We all have an irrational fear or two. Some of us get scared by an unexpected visit from a spider in our house; others get nervous when they look down from a high building. Fear is an evolutionary and adaptive function that can promote self-preservation and help us deal with the feared object or situation. However, when this state becomes excessive, it might develop into psychological disorders such as phobias, producing high anxiety and affecting everyday life. The Therapeutic Lamp is an interactive projection-based augmented-reality system for treating small-animal phobias. It aims to increa

Neural aspects of immunomodulation: focus on the vagus nerve.

Inflammation and immunity have been implicated in a wide variety of diseases and disorders ranging from Alzheimer's disease to cardiovascular disease to hemorrhagic shock. In this review, we will briefly consider the evidence for the neural concomitants of immunomodulation. First, we will briefly review the anatomy and physiology of neural-immune communication. Evidence for the somatotopic organization of the vagus nerve and for pain processes suggests that such an organization may be relevant for the investigation of the neural concomitants of immunity. Then we will provide an overview of wha

Traditional zootherapeutic studies in India: a review.

The present study aims to review the zootherapeutic practices of the different ethnic communities of India. This work is also an attempt to present a list of animals' use for medicinal purposes by different communities of India. Data were gathered from 15 published research papers of various authors on zootherapeutic studies in India from 2000 to 2007. Approximately 109 animals and their 270 uses are reported in traditional medicine in different parts of India. Of these, the highest numbers of animal species (42, 38.5%) with 50 (18.5%) uses have been reported for the treatment of Respiratory s

Australian and New Zealand Veterinary Students' Opinions on Animal Welfare and Ethical Issues Concerning Animal Use within Sport, Recreation, and Display.

Animals used for sport, recreation and display are highly visible and can divide community attitudes. The study of animal welfare and ethics (AWE) as part of veterinary education is important because it is the responsibility of veterinarians to use their scientific knowledge and skills to promote animal welfare in the context of community expectations. To explore the attitudes of veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand to AWE, a survey of the current cohort was undertaken. The survey aimed to reveal how veterinary students in Australia and New Zealand rate the importance of five selec

The application of biosecurity practices for preventing avian influenza in North-Eastern Italy turkey farms: An analysis of the point of view and perception of farmers.

INTRODUCTION: Italian and international outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), particularly in densely populated poultry areas (DPPAs), have increased over the past few decades. These emerging risks, which endanger both human and animal health and the entire poultry industry, can be effectively limited by biosecurity measures implemented at human-animal food chain interfaces. Some problems, however, persist in the application of these measures on the part of poultry farmers, prompting the need to explore those aspects and causes that limit their implementation. The Impact of Environmental, Nutritional, and Animal Welfare Labeling of Plant-Based Cream Cheese on Consumer Perception.

Plant-based alternatives (PBAs) to dairy products are increasingly positioned as nutritionally beneficial, sustainable, and ethical food choices; however, consumer acceptance of PBAs remains limited, partly due to sensory challenges and uncertainty surrounding effective product communication strategies. This study investigated the influence of environmental, nutritional, and animal welfare labeling on consumer perception of plant-based cream cheese (PBCC). A total of 114 consumers evaluated the same commercially available PBCC under four labeling conditions: blinded (control) and with statemen

Animal-assisted support programs for residents in Canadian long-term care homes: a feasibility and acceptability study.

BACKGROUND: Animal-assisted services, specifically animal-assisted support programs (AASPs, pet therapy, animal-assisted therapy, animal-assisted activities), are promising programs that may improve the mental health and overall well-being of older adults living with and without dementia in long-term care (LTC) homes. Few studies have explored the perspectives of residents and LTC staff regarding AASPs for older adults. This study aimed to identify the initial perspectives of LTC staff regarding the feasibility, acceptability, and other factors influencing the implementation of a live AASP wit

A description of 17 animal hoarding case files from animal control and a humane society.

This study describes 17 publicly available cases of animal hoarding, a special manifestation of hoarding disorder. The cases, which included court documents, animal service documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings, were reviewed by Masters-level clinicians and a veterinarian in private practice. The veterinarian rated the animals in the case files for possible neglect. Over half of the homes had signs of object hoarding. The most commonly hoarded animals were cats, dogs, and rabbits. The majority of animals in the cases reviewed required veterinary care. Individuals with animal hoarding

Human-wildlife conflict and its impacts on livelihoods, health, and the environment in Chebera Churchura National Park, Southwest Ethiopia: a phenomenological study using a One Health approach with an urgent call for action.

BACKGROUND: Chebera Churchura National Park (CCNP), located in Southwest Ethiopia, was established to conserve biodiversity. However, its contribution to the livelihood and wellbeing of the proximal communities remains limited. Local people derive few tangible benefits from conservation while facing significant costs through crop losses, livestock predation, and restricted access to natural resources factors that intensify human-wildlife conflict (HWC). Previous studies have addressed HWCs focused mainly from ecological and socio-economic aspects with limited attention to the linkage between h
