Antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of lectin from marine red alga Pterocladiella capillacea.

Researchers see algae as a promising tool to discover both efficient and safe agents for pain therapy. We evaluated the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of lectin from the marine alga Pterocladiella capillacea lectin (PcL). PcL was purified and tested in classical models of nociception and inflammation. Male Swiss mice received PcL 30 min prior to receiving 0.8% acetic acid (10 microl/10 g, i.p.), 1% formalin (20 microl/intraplantar) or the hot plate test, and were compared to untreated animals or animals pretreated with indomethacin or morphine. PcL (0.9, 8.1 or 72.9 mg/kg, i.

Neuronal migration is transiently delayed by prenatal exposure to intermittent hypoxia.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal neurodevelopment is influenced by a variety of external factors, although the mechanisms responsible are poorly understood. Prenatal hypoxia, from physiological or chemical sources, can have no discernible effect, or can result in a broad spectrum of abnormalities. METHODS: To mimic some of the maternal effects of smoking, we developed a model that investigates the effects of intermittent hypoxia (IH), with or without concurrent nicotine in timed pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats. RESULTS: We found no significant differences between litter sizes or birthweight of pups from an

Evaluation of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis exoantigen in the detection of delayed dermal hypersensitivity in experimental and human paracoccidioidomycosis.

The exoantigen of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis standardized by Camargo et al. (AgR) was used to evaluate the in vivo and in vitro cell immune response of experimental animals and of patients with paracoccidioidomycosis (PBM). Fava Netto antigen (AgF) was tested in parallel as a control antigen. The study was conducted with mice and guinea pigs infected with P. brasiliensis or immunized with its fungal antigens, on patients with PBM and on their respective control groups. The cell immune response was analysed by skin tests, and by the macrophage and leucocyte migration inhibition tests (MMIT a

Pathogenesis of renal lesions in haemoglobinaemic and non-haemoglobinaemic leptospirosis.

Hamsters were infected with Leptospira interrogans serovar ballum or Leptospira interrogans serovar pomona and the kidney lesions were compared by light and electron microscopy. Ballum and pomona both caused severe clinical signs and death within 6 days in some animals, although only ballum was associated with red blood cell destruction and haemoglobinaemic nephrosis. With ballum infections it is difficult to distinguish degenerate changes resulting from leptospiral "toxins" from those resulting from hypoxia and haemoglobinaemic nephrosis because large numbers of organisms and haemoglobinaemia

Human and livestock migrations: a history of bot fly biodiversity in the Mediterranean region.

The bot fly (oestrid) is responsible for myiasis in domestic animals. The presence in some regions of southern Europe of an unusually large number of different species of bot fly suggests a high degree of oestrid biodiversity in this area. The many factors that can influence parasitic species composition (e.g. host and parasite genetics, relationships with their hosts and environment, and animal management) include the movement of domestic animals in association with migrating human populations in southern Europe over thousands of years. From its geographical position, which was strategically

Melioidosis in animals: a review on epizootiology, diagnosis and clinical presentation.

Melioidosis, an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei is an emerging disease with high impact on animals and man. In different animal species, the clinical course varies and delayed diagnosis poses risks for the dissemination of the agent in non-endemic areas. Not only migration and transport of animals around the world but also tourism increases the risk that melioidosis can leave its endemic boundaries and establish itself elsewhere. Detection of the agent is a major challenge, as the agent has to be handled in laboratories of biosafety level 3 and test kits are not yet comm

Larva migrans in BALB/c mice experimentally infected with Toxocara cati ensured by PCR assay.

BACKGROUND: Toxocara cati, the cat roundworm, is a parasitic nematode that known to cause toxocariasis in intermediate hosts and humans. In this study, we characterized the dynamics of T. cati larvae migration in BALB/c mice after inoculation with eggs and ensured the migration detecting the larval DNA by a PCR. To evaluate the dynamics of larval migration and distribution, twenty-four BALB/c mice were orally inoculated with 2500 T. cati infective eggs and the visceral organs of the infected animals were examined by pepsin digestion and microscopic parasite counts, followed by PCR at day 1 to

Expression of putative Escherichia coli heat-labile enterotoxin (LT) receptors on intestinal brush borders from pigs of different ages.

Many strains of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) that cause diarrhoea in young piglets secrete a heat-labile enterotoxin (LTp) that binds to specific glycoconjugates on porcine intestinal epithelial cells. Binding of LTp to an appropriate glycoconjugate facilitates the uptake and trafficking of the toxin into the cell, where it stimulates intracellular changes that promote fluid secretion and diarrhoea. The objective of the current study was to identify the LTp-binding glycoconjugates on porcine intestinal epithelial cells, the natural target cells for LTp. We found that LTp binds, in a

The pregnant Syrian hamster as a model to study intravascular trophoblasts and associated maternal blood vessel changes.

In pregnant Syrian hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus) used as an animal model for studying the migration of fetal trophoblasts and the associated changes in maternal blood vessels, intravascular trophoblasts migrated well beyond the blood vessels of the uterus and into the vessels of the mesometrium. They migrated beyond the decidua of the uterus, into the lumina of maternal uterine and mesometrial arteries, but not into veins. The arterial changes, which were often segmental, resembled those seen in the decidua and consisted of a replacement of normal smooth muscle cells by poorly differentiated

Primordial germ cell migration in the chick and mouse embryo: the role of the chemokine SDF-1/CXCL12.

As in many other animals, the primordial germ cells (PGCs) in avian and reptile embryos are specified in positions distinct from the positions where they differentiate into sperm and egg. Unlike in other organism however, in these embryos, the PGCs use the vascular system as a vehicle to transport them to the region of the gonad where they exit the blood vessels and reach their target. To determine the molecular mechanisms governing PGC migration in these species, we have investigated the role of the chemokine stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF-1/CXCL12) in guiding the cells towards their targ

Variation in movement patterns of mule deer: have we oversimplified migration?

BACKGROUND: Conservation and management of migratory animals has gained attention in recent years, but the majority of research has focused on stereotypical 'migrant' and 'resident' behaviors, often failing to incorporate any atypical behaviors or characterize migratory behaviors beyond distance and timing of the migration. With migration threatened by anthropogenic development and climate change, it is crucial that we understand the full range of migratory behaviors. Our objective was to demonstrate and characterize the variation in migration strategies, including typical and atypical migrato

SLC39A1 promotes pancreatic cancer metastasis by elevating intracellular zinc and activating the Src/FAK signaling pathway.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a highly aggressive malignancy, and zinc ion homeostasis is closely linked to its metastatic potential, though the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate this, single-cell RNA sequencing data from primary and metastatic PC were downloaded from the GEO database to analyze differences in zinc ion levels and identify key zinc-regulating proteins. A PC mouse model was further established, and experiments including immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, and zinc ion level detection were conducted to comprehensively evaluate the impact of zinc io

CTHRC1 Derived From Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Promotes Pancreatic Cancer Progression and Metastasis via the LIF-STAT3 Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Collagen triple helix repeat containing 1 (CTHRC1) is a secreted protein involved in tissue remodeling and fibrotic processes, which also suggests emerging roles in cancer. Studies have shown that it is mainly expressed in the outer membrane fibroblasts of injured arteries and in the neointimal smooth muscle cells, where it promotes cell migration and tissue damage repair. However, the regulatory role of CTHRC1 as a tumor microenvironment factor in pancreatic cancer is not well understood. METHODS: We employed multi-omics analysis combined with cellular and animal experiments to e

ITGA3 participates in the pathogenesis of recurrent spontaneous abortion by downregulating ULK1-mediated autophagy to inhibiting trophoblast function.

Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA) is a significant challenge encountered by couples of reproductive ages, with inadequate trophoblast invasion identified as a primary factor in RSA pathogenesis. However, the precise molecular mechanisms through which trophoblast cell dysfunction leads to RSA remain incompletely understood. Research has highlighted the critical role of integrins in embryo implantation and development. Although integrin α-3 (ITGA3) is recognized for its promotion of invasion in cancer cells, its involvement in miscarriage remains poorly characterized. This investigation initi

In vivo and in virto cellular responses to cytoplasmic and cell wall antigens of Histoplasma capsulatum in artificially immunized or infected guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs were infected with different doses of yeasts of Histoplasma capsulatum or artifically immunized with several concentrations of unextracted yeast cell walls, and then tested in vivo and in vitro for cell-mediated responses to various subcellular fractions of the fungus. Three types of cell-mediated responses were measured, viz., skin test activity, production of migration inhibition factor, and lymphocyte transformation. Positive cutaneous reactions were elicited in animals immunized with 100 or 1,000 mug of cell walls when such animals were skin-tested with cell wall glycoprotein o

Survival, migration and neuronal differentiation of human fetal striatal and cortical neural stem cells grafted in stroke-damaged rat striatum.

Stroke is a neurodegenerative disorder and the leading cause of disability in adult humans. Treatments to support efficient recovery in stroke patients are lacking. Several studies have demonstrated the ability of grafted neural stem cells (NSCs) to partly improve impaired neurological functions in stroke-subjected animals. Recently, we reported that NSCs from human fetal striatum and cortex exhibit region-specific differentiation in vitro, but survive, migrate and form neurons to a similar extent after intrastriatal transplantation in newborn rats. Here, we have transplanted the same cells in

Unintended migration of a catheter inserted into the extradural intervertebral vein of a harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus).

A 22-year-old, intact female harp seal (Pagophilus groenlandicus), body mass 114 kg, was presented for advanced diagnostic imaging to investigate chronic thoracic limb lameness and intermittent hematuria. To secure vascular access following induction of general anesthesia, a catheter was inserted at the lumbosacral junction and advanced into the extradural intervertebral vein (EDV). The catheter was easily advanced on the third attempt to identify the EDV. Following iodinated contrast medium injection, computed tomography showed that the EDV catheter had wrapped around the spinal cord, resulti
