A case of brodifacoum poisoning is described in a six-year-old male Kelpie cross working dog. The clinical features were severe exercise intolerance, haemorrhage from the oral and nasal cavities, dyspnoea and pale mucous membranes. Diagnosis was confirmed by demonstrating an abnormally long whole blood clotting time. The dog was treated successfully by administering 1 litre of whole blood intravenously, intramuscular vitamin K1 and a three week course of oral vitamin K3. Experience at the Massey University Small Animal Clinic and Hospital has indicated that poisoning of dogs with the newer lon

Hexavalent chromium compounds exhibit higher toxicity than its trivalent compounds since chromium ions in the +6 oxidation state easily cross biological membranes. It has recently been proposed that substances reducing chromium ions from the +6 to the less toxic +3 oxidation state can be beneficial in management of acute chromium poisoning. In vitro studies also demonstrated quercetin-5 '-sulfonic acid sodium salt (NaQSA) to reduce chromium ions from the +6 to the +3 oxidation state. The aim of the study was to determine efficacy of NaQSA in treatment of acute poisoning with a hexavalent chrom

CONTEXT: Sulfur mustard (SM), a bifunctional alkylating agent, can react with a variety of biochemical molecules (DNA, RNA, proteins and other cell components) to cause a series of serious health issues or even death. Although a plethora of research has been done, the pathogenesis of SM poisoning has yet to be fully understood due to its high complexity. As a consequence, a specific antidote has not yet been developed and the treatment of SM poisoning remains a medical challenge. In recent years, various biological products and cell transplantation in the treatment of SM poisoning offered a si

Self poisoning with beta-blocking drugs might increase with the extension of their therapeutic fields. Usually the management of this intoxication is mainly directed toward antagonizing the beta-adrenoreceptor blocking effects. Thus attention is specially directed to the cardiovascular condition and to the bronchoconstrictor effect. Nonetheless, in spite of this treatment, fatal cases have been reported, suggesting that other complications are responsible of the clinical course of this acute poisoning. In fact, in some cases, a respiratory arrest appeared as the major determinant of death, alt

The clinical manifestations of acute poisoning by organophosphorus compounds in man are in accord with, initially, the stimulation and, later, the blocking of cholinergic transmission due to acetylcholinesterase inhibition. The manifestations involve mainly the para-sympathetic nerves, the neuromuscular junctions, and the central nerve synapses, and to a smaller degree the cholinergic sympathetic nerves. Miosis and muscle fasciculations are useful signs for diagnosis and for the control of therapy. Blood cholinesterase determination is the best diagnostic test. The cause of death is usually re

BACKGROUND: Physostigmine and its analogues neostigmine, pyridostigmine and rivastigmine are carbamates nowadays used in many indications, including antidotal effects against antimuscarinic poisonings, reversal of competitive neuromuscular block, myasthenia gravis, Alzheimer's disease and prophylaxis against nerve agent intoxications. Use of these medicinal carbamates, but also of carbamate insecticides, created need for research into the potential and mechanisms of action of several antidotes against carbamate poisonings, including anticholinergics and oximes.

The alvinellid worm Paralvinella hessleri is the only animal that colonizes the hottest part of deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the west pacific. We found P. hessleri accumulates exceptionally high level of toxic element arsenic (>1% of wet weight) and tolerated elevated concentrations hydrogen sulphide. Using advanced microscopy, elementary analysis, and genomics and proteomics approaches, we identified a previously unrecognized arsenic-sulfide biomineralization process in P. hessleri. Our data suggest that arsenic accumulates within epithelial cell granules, where it likely reacts with sulphi

Among those infectious diseases that lead to insurance settlement for damages, we normally list those cases that do not involve person-to-person transmission, but rather those cases wherein the harmful agent enters the body without the intention of the person harmed, and which causes acute infectious disease or food poisoning. This is the way in which, for example, tick-borne encephalitis following an insect bite, rabies caused by animal bites, and acute food poisoning contracted in restaurants or from public catering arise. We can also list among the latter those cases of avian influenza illn

Food contaminants represent possible threats to humans and animals as severe food safety hazards. Prolonged exposure to contaminated food often leads to chronic diseases such as cancer, kidney or liver failure, immunosuppression, or genotoxicity. Aflatoxins are naturally produced by strains of the fungi species Aspergillus, which is one of the most critical and poisonous food contaminants worldwide. Given the high percentage of contaminated food products, traditional detection methods often prove inadequate. Thus, it becomes imperative to develop fast, accurate, and easy-to-use analytical meth

The antivenom production against poisonous creatures encounters a number of difficulties. Interestingly, according to the network theory the conventional antigens are not necessarily needed for producing antibodies against the venoms. In this investigation, the antivenom against Mesobuthus eupeus venom was produced based on the aforementioned theory. Polyclonal antibodies against M. eupeus venom were obtained from the immunized rabbits and the specific antibodies were isolated. After separation of Fab2, immunization process and production of the monovalent and anti-idiotype, these antivenoms w

The acute cardiovascular and respiratory effects of poisoning by high soman doses and its therapy by atropine, as well as the underlying mechanisms, are not well known as yet. Therefore, it was the purpose of this study to analyze the circulatory and respiratory functions in soman-poisoned and atropine-treated guinea-pigs. Female Pirbright-white guinea-pigs were anaesthetized with urethane (1.8 g/kg) and the arteria carotis, vena jugularis and trachea were cannulated. After base line measurements, soman (32, 80 or 160 micrograms/kg, i.v.; i.e. 2, 5 or 10 x LD50, respectively) or saline were in

Amitraz is used as a pesticide in agricultural and veterinary medicine. It is primarily a central α2 adrenergic agonist and known to cause central nervous system depression, convulsions, respiratory depression, and bradycardia on severe intoxication. We report a case of a 3-year-old child who presented with accidental ingestion of amitraz solution with signs of severe poisoning. There is no specific antidote of amitraz poisoning in humans, however, animal experiments with α2 adrenergic antagonists such as yohimbine and atimepazole have been successful. The child was managed besides intensive m
