Dangerous reef aquaristics: Palytoxin of a brown encrusting anemone causes toxic corneal reactions.

Although frequently observed in domestic saltwater aquariums, literature on exposure to palytoxin (PTX) of encrusting anemones (Zoanthidea) kept in aquariums is rare. Handling these animals for propagation purposes or during cleaning work can lead to dermal, ocular or respiratory contact with the PTX generated by some Zoanthids. The present study describes a case of ocular exposure to liquid from a Zoanthid, which led to corneal ulcers. The patient also suffered from systemic symptoms of dyspnea and shivering and a suspected rhabdomyolysis, which required monitoring in the Intensive Care Unit.

Mutagenicity, genotoxicity, and scavenging activities of extracts from the soft coral Chromonephthea braziliensis: a possibility of new bioactive compounds.

Coral reefs are diverse ecosystems that have a high density of biodiversity leading to intense competition among species. These species may produce unknown substances, many with pharmacological value. Chromonephthea braziliensis is an invasive soft coral from the Indo-Pacific Ocean that is possibly transported by oil platforms and whose presence can be a threat to a region's biodiversity. This species produces secondary metabolites that are responsible for inducing damage to the local ecosystem. In the present study, extracts were prepared from dried colonies of C. braziliensis (solvents: hexa

Shifts in bacterial communities of two Caribbean reef-building coral species affected by white plague disease.

Coral reefs are deteriorating at an alarming rate mainly as a consequence of the emergence of coral diseases. The white plague disease (WPD) is the most prevalent coral disease in the southwestern Caribbean, affecting dozens of coral species. However, the identification of a single causal agent has proved problematic. This suggests more complex etiological scenarios involving alterations in the dynamic interaction between environmental factors, the coral immune system and the symbiotic microbial communities. Here we compare the microbiome of healthy and WPD-affected corals from the two reef-bu

Isolation, biological significance, synthesis, and cytotoxic evaluation of new natural parathiosteroids A-C and analogues from the soft coral Paragorgia sp.

Three unusual new steroid thioesters, parathiosteroids A-C (1a-3a), were isolated from the 2-propanol extract of the soft coral Paragorgia sp. collected in Madagascar. Their structures, determined by detailed spectroscopic analysis, were confirmed by synthesis and represent the first isolation of natural steroids bearing a C22 thioester in their side chain. These compounds displayed cytotoxicity against a panel of three human tumor cell lines at the micromolar level. The preparation of several analogues revealed structure/activity relationships in this type of steroids, for example, that the X

Predictability of reef fish recruitment in a highly variable nursery habitat.

There has been a lengthy debate on whether the abundance of adult reef fishes depends on prerecruitment or postrecruitment processes; however, we still do not have the ability to predict the magnitude of local fish recruitment. Here we show that the success of the leopard grouper (Mycteroperca rosacea) recruitment in the Gulf of California, Mexico, is determined by the availability of nursery habitat, which in turn is strongly correlated to climate conditions. Observational and experimental studies showed that leopard grouper larvae recruit preferentially on shallow rocky bottoms with brown al

The pink-blue spot syndrome in Acropora eurystoma (Eilat, Red Sea): a possible marker of stress?

The appearance of pink-blue spots (termed here as pink-blue spot syndrome - PBSS) in the branching coral Acropora eurystoma from the Gulf of Eilat, Red Sea, is described. We monitored 18 transects (10 x 1 m2 each) in front of the H. Steinitz Marine Laboratory (Eilat), at 3, 6 and 9 m depth, during March and August in 2001 and 2002. Transect measurements revealed high frequencies of colonies with PBSS (up to 100% of colonies) between 3 and 9 m depth. Ten PBSS-affected colonies of A. eurystoma were labelled and monitored for the development of spots. From March to August 2001, the number of spot

Early life stages of stress-tolerant corals (Favites spp.) exhibit tolerance to acute thermal stress.

The Bolinao-Anda Reef Complex (BARC) in northwestern Philippines is one of the most heavily impacted reef systems in the Philippines, experiencing recurring marine heat waves and declining water quality due to coastal development and mariculture. As ocean warming and declining water quality continue, stress-tolerant coral species are expected to become increasingly dominant. Understanding how these corals respond to elevated temperatures in the early stages is critical for predicting future reef trajectories. In this study, we examined survival and development of embryos, settlement and surviv

Biotechnological potential of marine invertebrate-associated bacteria with antibacterial activity against aquaculture and human pathogens.

Marine invertebrates harbor diverse bacterial communities that contribute to host defense by producing antibacterial compounds. In this study, 258 cultivable bacterial isolates from corals (Porites panamensis, P. lobata), the sea urchin Echinometra vanbrunti, and the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi were screened against aquaculture and human pathogens. 14% (37 isolates) exhibited antibacterial activity, predominantly from E. vanbrunti and M. leidyi. Multiple assays revealed strong, broad-spectrum inhibition, particularly against aquaculture pathogens such as Listonella anguillarum, Photobacterium

Heat-evolved coral photosymbionts exhibit dampened stress responses across distinct physiological contexts.

Experimental evolution under elevated temperatures has generated heat-evolved (HE) strains of Symbiodiniaceae that enhance coral bleaching tolerance. However, the biomolecular mechanisms underlying this resilience remain poorly understood. We conducted a laboratory heat-stress experiment and applied synchrotron-based Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) microspectroscopy to examine physiological and biomolecular responses of HE (strain: SS8) and wild-type (strain: WT10) Cladocopium proliferum to thermal stress across three physiological contexts: in hospite, expelled, and cultured. Context-dependent coral physiological responses to heat stress across a natural turbidity gradient.

Corals in turbid environments may be more resilient to thermal stress than their clear-water counterparts, yet the physiological trade-offs affecting corals subject to multiple stressors are still poorly understood. During the summer of 2023, corals reefs in the Dampier Archipelago (Western Australia) experienced high temperatures and heat stress (>31.5 °C and 14.4 degree heating weeks), reduced pH (>0.1 unit decline), and a ∼30% increase in light attenuation, providing a natural laboratory to assess coral metabolic responses to multiple stressors. We determined photosynthesis, respiration, an

Leveraging deep learning semantic segmentation for imaging coral skeletons.

Micro-computed tomography and semantic segmentation provide insights into the structural hierarchy of biomineralized tissues, as exemplified by stony coral skeletons. Non-destructive imaging reveals mechanistic aspects of skeletal growth, including variations in porosity, density, and skeletal thickness across species and in the context of disease. Recent developments in semantic segmentation based on convolutional neural network models are poised to transform the streamlined analysis of large 3D tomography datasets, surpassing the performance of traditional segmentation methods. In this work,

Natural coral recovery despite negative population growth.

Demographic processes that ensure the recovery and resilience of marine populations are critical as climate change sends an increasing proportion on a trajectory of decline. Yet for some populations, recovery potential remains high. We conducted annual monitoring over 9 years (2012-2020) to assess the recovery of coral populations belonging to the genus Pocillopora. These populations experienced a catastrophic collapse following a severe typhoon in 2009. From the start of the monitoring period, high initial recruitment led to the establishment of a juvenile population that rapidly transitioned

Coral reef rehabilitation following Hurricane Irma using nano-engineered artificial reefs in Sint Maarten.

Artificial reefs are being increasingly deployed as a coral reef restoration strategy. Additional reef habitats made from conventional substrates (e.g., metal, concrete, etc.) have had limited success in addressing conservation objectives on degraded coral reefs due to structure size and lack of standardized monitoring, and inability to enhance select ecological, and species variables. Technological advances and new restoration methods must be quickly tested and applied on a large scale to curb further deterioration of coral reefs. Here, we present the results of the first deployment of Oceani

Acute toxicity testing of TiO2-based vs. oxybenzone-based sunscreens on clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris).

Given the prevalence of skin cancer, sunscreens are recommended by dermatologists including the American Academy of Dermatology to protect skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. Unfortunately, this leads to an estimated 14,000 tons of sunscreen entering waterways each year. Many of the chemicals in sunscreens, such as oxybenzone and benzophenone-2, are indicated to have adverse effects on corals and other aquatic life. As an eco-conscious alternative, physical barrier sunscreens, such as non-nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2), have been suggested as a replacement. This study examines the impact of a no

Sinularones A-I, new cyclopentenone and butenolide derivatives from a marine soft coral Sinularia sp. and their antifouling activity.

Nine new compounds, namely sinularones A-I (1-9), characterized as cyclopentenone and butenolide-type analogues, were isolated from a soft coral Sinularia sp., together with a known butenolide (10). Their structures were elucidated by means of spectroscopic (IR, MS, 1D and 2D NMR, CD) analysis. The absolute configurations were determined on the basis of CD and specific rotation data in association with the computed electronic circular dichroism (ECD) by time dependent density functional theory (TD DFT) at 6-31+G(d,p)//DFT B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level. Compounds 1-2 and 7-10 showed potent antifoulin

Cyanide fishing and cyanide detection in coral reef fish using chemical tests and biosensors.

Sodium cyanide has been used in the Philippines to collect tropical marine fish for aquarium and food trades since the early 1960s. Cyanide fishing is a fast method to stun and collect fish. This practice is damaging the coral reefs irreversibly. In most countries cyanide fishing is illegal, but most of the exporting and importing countries do not have test and certificate systems. Many analytical methods are available for the detection of cyanide in environmental and biological samples. However, most of the techniques are time consuming, and some lack specificity or sensitivity. Besides, an u

Bone substitutes in 2003: an overview.

The authors review the various bone substitutes which are currently available on the market place in Belgium. After describing the requirements for clinical use of such materials, they compare the biological and mechanical values of bone autografts, bone allografts, demineralised bone, xenografts, coral and synthetic materials such as calcium sulfate, calcium phosphate, ionic cement and bioactive glass. They stress the current paucity of data pertaining to the biological value of these materials and call for in vivo validation tests. They also review biomolecules such as BMP-2 or OP-1, whose o

Mitochondrial DNA of the coral Sarcophyton glaucum contains a gene for a homologue of bacterial MutS: a possible case of gene transfer from the nucleus to the mitochondrion.

The nucleotide sequences of two segments of 6,737 ntp and 258 nto of the 18.4-kb circular mitochondrial (mt) DNA molecule of the soft coral Sarcophyton glaucum (phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, subclass Octocorallia, order Alcyonacea) have been determined. The larger segment contains the 3' 191 ntp of the gene for subunit 1 of the respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (ND1), complete genes for cytochrome b (Cyt b), ND6, ND3, ND4L, and a bacterial MutS homologue (MSH), and the 5' terminal 1,124 ntp of the gene for the large subunit rRNA (1-rRNA). These genes are arranged in the order given and a…

Mosaic Accumulation of Somatic Genetic Variation and Estimates of Age in the Long-Lived Reef-Building Coral Acropora palmata.

Somatic genetic variation (SoGV) accumulates during an organism's lifetime and is traditionally viewed as detrimental rather than adaptive due to links with cancer and senescence. However, in modular organisms like corals, deleterious mutations can be purged at the cellular or polyp level, while adaptive mutations may rise in frequency as polyps create genetically distinct modules. Quantifying the somatic genetic landscape in corals is necessary to understand the role these mutations may have in coral and clonal animal development and evolution. Here, we catalogue somatic genetic variation in

An integrated deep learning framework for automated coral health assessment using a custom-annotated database.

Coral reefs face accelerating threats from climate-induced bleaching events, underscoring the need for scalable and automated health monitoring tools. This paper presents a comprehensive deep learning framework integrating object detection and image classification with a rigorously evaluated preprocessing pipeline for automated coral health assessment. Building on the custom annotated coral bleaching dataset introduced in Weraikat et al. [1], comprising 2,640 underwater coral images, four preprocessing strategies, RGB normalization, HSV conversion, histogram equalization, and color jittering,
