BACKGROUND: There is evidence that frequency of AIN/AC rises in HIV+ individuals treated with HAART whilst frequency of most other opportunistic neoplasms declines with immune reconstitution.
METHOD: 1472 patients were screened 3655 times for ACA as a strong risk factor for AIN/AC. The periods 1985 to 1995 (before introduction of PI in Germany) and 1996 to 2001 were compared. In addition, 10 cases of AC are described. Time between HIV-infection and AC as well as time between ACA and AC is assessed, pre-treatment with HAART, age, CD4-cell count and CDC-stage at timepoint of diagnosis of AC is

Patients with a wide variety of anorectal lesions present to family physicians. Most can be successfully managed in the office setting. A high index of suspicion for cancer should be maintained and all patients should be questioned about relevant family history or other indications for cancer screening. Patients with condylomata acuminata must be examined for human papillomavirus infection elsewhere after treatment of the presenting lesions. Their sexual partners should also be counseled and screened. Both surgical and nonsurgical treatments are available for the pain of anal fissure. Infectio

Anal cancer is rare but increasingly common, currently accounting for 2% of all digestive neoplasms. Some 50% of anal cancers are diagnosed at the localized stage, 29% as locoregional disease, and 12% as metastatic disease. When clinical suspicion of anal cancer exists, histological confirmation, correct local staging with MRI and distant staging with thoraco-abdominal CT, and management by a multidisciplinary team are mandatory. Chemoradiotherapy with 5-FU and mitomycin C (MMC) is the standard of care for early and locally advanced disease, while combination chemotherapy with a platinum-conta

INTRODUCTION: Anorectal melanomas are rare and agressive malignant tumors of the anorectal region of the digestive tract. Due to their rarity and similarity to other more benign and common conditions, such as hemorrhoids, their diagnosis is often delayed, which worsens the prognosis of this aggressive disease. Histological evaluation with special immunohistochemical (IHC) staining is often essentiel to establish a confirmed diagnosis. In the localized stage, the primary treatment for this condition consists primarily of surgical resection combined with adjuvant immunotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The aim of this systematic review was to assess the literature on the incidence and risk factors for colorectal cancer and anal cancer in patients with perianal Crohn's disease.
METHOD: A systematic review of the literature was performed using PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar. A meta-analysis was then conducted using a random-effects model.
RESULTS: Five studies were included in the systematic review. Of the total patients, 26.5% had perianal Crohn's disease. The median follow-up was 6 years. In total, 127 cases of colorectal cancer were found [0.43% of the included Cro

Colorectal (CRC) and anal (AC) cancer, both lower gastrointestinal (GI) cancers vary in their presentation and treatment. Overall, the incidence of CRC has decreased. However, the incidence of CRCs in younger adults has increased over the last 5 years. The incidence of ACs has increased, too. Women are disproportionally impacted by AC which is frequently associated with human papilloma virus (HPV). Patients diagnosed with both cancers often experience multiple symptoms including pain, constipation, nausea, and vomiting. Psychosocial distress including embarrassment and shame often results from

BACKGROUND: The burden of HPV-related cancers in different regions worldwide varies according to several factors. This study aims to measure inequality in the risk of incidence of HPV-related cancers in term of geographical risk patterns in northern Thailand using a population-based cancer registry data.
METHODS: Trends in age-standardized HPV-related cancer incidence were calculated for the 2008-2017 time period. The Besag-York-Molli´e model was used to explore the spatial distribution of the relative risk (RR) of HPV-related cancers at the district level. A higher RR reflects a larger dispa

BACKGROUND: The late adverse effects of radiotherapy are caused by microvascular injury or depletion of differentiated cells.
METHODS: Here we describe a clinical case of a late and unusual complication related to radiotherapy, in a patient with a history of squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal.
RESULTS: The patient presented with a large perianal vegetating lesion suspicious of local recurrence, however the biopsy of the lesion did not show malignancy.
CONCLUSION: Fortunately, all is not as it seems, and what appeared as a suspected relapse turned out to be a benign reactive lesion, c

Colonic adenocarcinoma revealed by metastatic anorectal fistula is rare, with few cases in the literature. Such lesions can be taken for the more common manifestation of a benign perianal abscess or fistula. Once diagnosed, the management of such conditions remains controversial. We herein report two cases with perianal fistula that were subsequently found to have developed perianal adenocarcinoma on biopsy. Further colonic investigation revealed a rectosigmoid adenocarcinoma. Histology and immunohistochemical staining was identical in both primary and metastatic tumors. Preoperative chemoradi

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of screening for anal cancer precursors relative to screening for cervical cancer precursors has not been systematically examined. The aim of the current meta-analysis was to compare the relative accuracy of anal cytology to cervical cytology in discriminating between histopathologic high grade and lesser grades of dysplasia when the reference standard biopsy is obtained using colposcope magnification.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: The outcome metric of discrimination was the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve area. Random effects meta-analysis of eligible studies

We report a case of primary anorectal melanoma, a very rare malignant tumor in this localization. The patient, a 57-year-old female, complained for one year of symptoms, which were attributed to hemorrhoids. An abdomino-perineal resection was performed. Pathologic examination revealed an anorectal melanoma with numerous lymph node metastases and an unusual metastatic deposit in a uterine leiomyoma. The pathogenesis, pathology, principles of treatment and prognosis of this entity are briefly discussed.

Canine colonic intestinal adenocarcinoma typically presents as rectal polypoid or annular stenotic masses causing clinical signs consistent with large bowel disease. This report discusses an unusual case of intestinal adenocarcinoma in an 11-year-old, neutered male German shepherd dog presented for evaluation of anorexia, profuse watery diarrhea, and weight loss. In this dog, colonic adenocarcinoma diffusely infiltrated the entire large bowel and caused an annular fusiform lesion, as confirmed by endoscopic biopsies and postmortem examination. Other unique features included a paucity of desmop

Radiographic appearances at double contrast enema of 8 cases of anorectal cloacogenic carcinoma are described. In all cases tumor was radiologically identified as a neoplastic lesion, but the correct histologic diagnosis was not reached in any case. Radiological features of the cloacogenic carcinoma are: the evident submucosal mass, the poor mucosal involvement and the eccentricity of the lesion. However, the characteristics of the tumor are not peculiar and radiologic diagnosis of the nature of tumor can only be suspected.

CONTEXT.—: Superficially invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SISCCA) is defined as a minimally invasive cancer measuring less than 3 mm in depth and less than 7 mm in horizontal spread. Its subtle morphologic alterations pose a significant challenge for histologic diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE.—: To evaluate the diagnostic agreement among pathologists for SISCCA and to identify potential areas for improvement.
DESIGN.—: Four gastrointestinal (GI) and 4 gynecologic (GYN) pathologists independently reviewed digitized hematoxylin-eosin images of 20 anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesi

This narrative review explores the potential role of electrochemotherapy (ECT) in treating anorectal tumors, focusing on its effectiveness, feasibility, and associated toxicities. ECT, which combines chemotherapy with the application of an electric field to enhance drug uptake by tumor cells, has shown promise as a local treatment, particularly in cases where conventional therapies such as radiotherapy have been exhausted or are unsuitable. The review, conducted according to SANRA guidelines, included 18 studies, on ECT in anorectal tumors, ranging from preclinical trials in dogs to case repor
