Smoking by young women with restrained eating following a food prime in the context of an alternative distractor.

Female smokers with elevated dietary restraint (high restrainers) may smoke more than nonrestrained eaters after a disinhibiting food event. The current study aimed to determine whether high restrainers smoke merely to distract themselves from unplanned eating or whether the weight-control aspects of smoking play a role. Primary aims were to test the effect of restraint status and a food prime on smoking and eating behavior in the presence of an alternative distractor (a computer tablet) and to examine the role of expectancies. Utilizing a between-subject design, female smokers (N = 128) were

Caralluma fimbriata extract activity involves the 5-HT2c receptor in PWS Snord116 deletion mouse model.

INTRODUCTION: In Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS), nonprotein coding small nucleolar (sno) RNAs are involved in the paternally deleted region of chromosome 15q11.2-q13, which is believed to cause the hyperphagic phenotype of PWS. Central to this is SnoRNA116. The supplement Caralluma fimbriata extract (CFE) has been shown to decrease appetite behavior in some individuals with PWS. We therefore investigated the mechanism underpinning the effect of CFE on food intake in the Snord116del mouse. Experiments utilized appetite stimulants which included a 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) 2c receptor antagonist (

The hypothalamus, hormones, and hunger: alterations in human obesity and illness.

Obesity is a major global epidemic, with over 300 million obese people worldwide, and nearly 1 billion overweight adults. Being overweight carries significant health risks, reduced quality of life, and impaired socioeconomic success, with profound consequences for health expenditure. The most successful treatment for obesity is gastric bypass surgery, which acts in part by reducing appetite through alterations in gut hormones. Circulating gut hormones, secreted or suppressed after eating food, act in the brain, particularly the hypothalamus, to alter hunger and fullness. Stomach-derived ghreli

Effects of stress on chewing and food intake in patients with anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The present study investigates the impact of psychosocial stress on chewing and eating behavior in patients with anorexia nervosa (PAN ). METHOD: The eating and chewing behavior of PAN were examined in a standardized setting by means of a chewing sensor. These procedures encompassed n = 19 PAN , age, and gender matched to n = 19 healthy controls (HC). Food intake and chewing frequency were assessed in two experimental conditions: rest versus stress (via Trier Social Stress Test). To verify stress induction, two appraisal scales were employed. In addition, chronic stress, psychologi

Sensitivity of host-seeking nymphal lone star ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) to immersion in heated water.

Host-seeking nymphal Amblyomma americanum (L.) (Acari: Ixodidae) were placed into heated water, and their survival or their torpidity was recorded as a function of exposure time. Exposures were determined that either kill the nymphs or affect their mobility. All nymphs died when exposed for a minute or more to a temperature > 51 degrees C. Nearly all nymphs remained motionless for a period of time when exposed for 3 min to a temperature > 44 degrees C.

Symptom clusters in cancer patients and their relation to EGFR ligand modulation of the circadian axis.

Recent studies in chronobiology and the neurosciences have led to rapid growth in our understanding of the molecular biology of the human timekeeping apparatus and the neuroanatomic sites involved in signaling between the "master clock" in the hypothalamus and other parts of the brain. The circadian axis comprises a central clock mechanism and a downstream network of hypothalamic relay stations that modulate arousal, feeding, and sleeping behavior. Communication between the clock and these hypothalamic signaling centers is mediated, in part, by diffusible substances that include ligands of the

Effects of chronic vanadate administration in the STZ-induced diabetic rat. The antihyperglycemic action of vanadate is attributable entirely to its suppression of feeding.

Vanadate treatment can lower glycemia in diabetic rats. This action is generally attributed to vanadate's insulinomimetic properties, but vanadate also inhibits feeding, which could lower blood glucose. We therefore assessed the contribution of hypophagia to vanadate's antihyperglycemic action in a 3-week study of streptozocin-induced (STZ) diabetic rats. Untreated diabetic rats (n = 8) ate 54% more food than nondiabetic control rats (P < 0.001). Diabetic rats given sodium metavanadate (0.5 mg in 0.5 ml of water by gavage twice daily; n = 8) had significantly lower food intakes (P < 0.001) tha

Wood mouse feeding effort and decision-making when encountering a restricted unknown food source.

Animals making foraging decisions must balance the energy gained, the time invested, and the influence of key environmental factors. In our work, we examined the effect of predation risk cues and experience on feeding efforts when a novel food resource was made available. To achieve this, we live-trapped wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus in Monte de Valdelatas (Madrid), where 80 Sherman traps were set in four plots. Traps were subjected to two food-access difficulties in treatments consisting of three consecutive nights: open plastic bottles (easy) and closed bottles (difficult), both using corn

Prospective object search in dogs: mixed evidence for knowledge of What and Where.

We investigated whether two dogs that had been specially trained to retrieve objects by their names were able to integrate information about the identity (What) as well as the location (Where) of those objects so that they could plan their search accordingly. In a first study, two sets of objects were placed in two separate rooms and subjects were asked to retrieve the objects, one after the other. Both dogs remembered the identity of the objects as they reliably retrieved the correct objects. One of the dogs was also able to integrate information about the object's location as he chose the co

[Reaching behavior of rats during realization of a lateralized motor food skill].

Adult Wistar rats were trained to obtain food pellets from a narrow horizontal tube with a preferred forepaw. The feeder was equipped with five photoelectric sensors with 5-mm spacing. The following parameters were recorded: total number of movements performed for a given task, amplitude (depth) of each movement, number of anticipatory movements performed with different amplitudes, and amplitude of a successful movement. It was shown that in rats with good skill acquisition, a successful food extraction was preceded by a series of differently organized sequence of preliminary movements. In som

Use of forensic analysis to better understand shark attack behaviour.

Shark attacks have primarily been analyzed from wound patterns, with little knowledge of a shark's approach, behaviour and intention leading to such wounds. For the first time, during a shark-human interaction project in South Africa, a white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, was filmed biting a vertically positioned person at the water surface, and exhibiting distinct approach patterns leading to the bite. This bite was compared to ten white shark attacks that occurred (i) in the same geographical area of South Africa, and (ii) where the same body parts were bitten. Close similarity of some of t

Host-seeking strategies of mosquito disease vectors.

Disease transmission by arthropods normally requires at least 2 host contacts. During the first, a pathogen (nematode, protozoan, or virus) is acquired along with the blood from an infected vertebrate host. The pathogen penetrates the vector's midgut and infects a variety of tissues, where replication may occur during an extrinsic incubation period lasting 3-30, days depending on vector and parasite physiology and ambient temperature. Following salivary-gland infection, the pathogen is usually transmitted to additional susceptible vertebrate hosts during future probing or blood feeding. The ho

Behavioral satiety sequence (BSS) for the diagnosis of drug action on food intake.

The Behavioral Satiety Sequence (BSS) is the name given to the orderly transitions of eating, activity grooming and resting measured during the postingestive period. Because the BSS is considered to reflect the operations of natural physiological processes underlying satiety, the sequence can be used to discriminate between different drugs (and other manipulations) that reduce food intake via these natural physiological mechanisms or those that do so by interference. The BSS is only produced by the presence of a caloric load in the gut, and the preabsorptive satiety factors (such as CCK) the c

Restrictive eating in anorexia nervosa: Examining maintenance and consequences in the natural environment.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined negative and positive affect in relation to restrictive eating episodes (i.e., meals/snacks perceived as restrictive) and whether restrictive eating was associated with likelihood of subsequent eating disorder behaviors (i.e., additional restrictive eating, binge eating, vomiting, laxative use, weighing, exercising, meal skipping, drinking fluids to curb appetite, body checking). METHOD: Women with anorexia nervosa (N = 118) completed a 2-week ecological momentary assessment protocol. RESULTS: For both restrictive and nonrestrictive eating, negative affect sign

The behavioral neurochemistry of motivation: methodological and conceptual issues in studies of the dynamic activity of nucleus accumbens dopamine.

Considerable experimental and clinical evidence links forebrain dopamine (DA) systems to the performance of motor activities and to motivational processes. Much of the support for this conclusion was obtained from studies utilizing lesions or drugs to manipulate aspects of central dopaminergic function. Although such experiments yield important information concerning the behavioral consequences of interference with DA systems in brain, they do not demonstrate any relation between the dynamic activity of DA neurons and the level or type of motor function exhibited by the organism. This review d

Reinforcer magnitude attenuates: apomorphine's effects on operant pecking.

When given to pigeons, the direct-acting dopamine agonist apomorphine elicits pecking. The response has been likened to foraging pecking because it bears remarkable similarity to foraging behavior, and it is enhanced by food deprivation. On the other hand, other data suggest the response is not related to foraging behavior and may even interfere with food ingestion. Although elicited pecking interferes with food capture, it may selectively alter procurement phases of feeding, which can be isolated in operant preparations. To explore the relation between operant and elicited pecking, we provide

Odorant receptors for floral- and plant-derived volatiles in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Adult mosquitoes require regular sugar meals, usually floral nectar, to survive and flourish in natural habitats. Both males and females locate potential sugar sources using sensory proteins called odorant receptors activated by plant volatiles that facilitate orientation toward flowers or honeydew. The Yellow Fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762), possesses a large repertoire of odorant receptors, many of which are likely to support floral odor detection and nectar-seeking. In this study, we have employed a heterologous expression system and the two-electrode voltage clamping techniq

Phasic dopamine release in the medial prefrontal cortex enhances stimulus discrimination.

Phasic dopamine (DA) release is believed to guide associative learning. Most studies have focused on projections from the ventral tegmental area (VTA) to the striatum, and the action of DA in other VTA target regions remains unclear. Using optogenetic activation of VTA projections, we examined DA function in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). We found that mice perceived optogenetically induced DA release in mPFC as neither rewarding nor aversive, and did not change their previously learned behavior in response to DA transients. However, repetitive temporal pairing of an auditory conditioned
