Post-conflict nutritional status of school-age children in North Wollo zone, Northeast Ethiopia: a multi-center cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Conflict invariably disrupts food production in affected areas, exacerbates food insecurity, and results in population displacement. In 2021, the invasion of the Amhara region by the Tigrayan armed group led to widespread impoverishment of much of Amhara population. The conflict particularly exacerbated malnutrition rates in the North Wollo Zone. Despite this, studies focusing on undernutrition in conflict-affected areas within the Zone have not yet been documented. Therefore, this study assessed post-conflict nutritional status of school-age children in Northeast Ethiopia. METHOD

[Public health in Franco's Spain as seen from the World Health Organization: the Brockington Report (1967)].

The aim of this note is to introduce the report on the health system of Spain written in 1967 by the WHO expert on Public Health Administration, and retired professor of the University of Manchester, Prof. CF Brockington, I summarise along general lines the relationships established between Spain and the WHO, describe the role of consultants, give an outline of the character of this author and the political context of the time. I also describe the difficulties encountered with his recommendations, which can nevertheless be viewed as seminal contributions to the major changes that were to take

Mental health of women and children experiencing family violence in conflict settings: a mixed methods systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Armed conflict has significant impacts on individuals and families living in conflict-affected settings globally. Scholars working to prevent violence within families have hypothesised that experiencing armed conflict leads to an increase in family violence and mental health problems. In this review, we assessed the prevalence of family violence in conflict settings, its association with the mental health of survivors, moderating factors, and the importance of gender relations. METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically reviewed quantitative and qualitative studies th

Identifying the effects of large catastrophic shocks on the distribution of births using a combination of Benford's law and the Vector Error Correction Model(VECM).

This study examines the case of Romanian births, jointly distributed by age groups of mother and father, covering the period 1958-2022, under the potential influence of significant disruptors. Demographic shocks like armed conflicts, epidemics, floods, or slave trade are already present in the literature. Therefore, our study searches for the effects of World War II, the 1966 Anti-abortion Decree and COVID-19 shocks on birth distribution. Other legislative and political changes are not marginalized. Applying First Digit Law of Benford we search for anomalies in birth data. Then, following a ve…

War and peace: Is our world serious about achieving Sustainable Development Goals by 2030?

Only 12 years are left to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. However, the 2018 Global Peace Index revealed that global pe … ers fall into seemingly endless cycles of conflict and violence. Globe is witnessed a steep rise in armed conflicts in recent years and with 62% of those in extreme poverty estimated to be living in countries at risk from high levels of violence by 2030. Intimate Partner Violence in the Canadian Armed Forces: Psychological Distress and the Role of Individual Factors Among Military Spouses.

Unique military demands can have a significant impact upon family life. Although most Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) families are able to cope effectively with the stressors of military life, some may experience marital conflicts, contributing to spousal violence. Moreover, there is evidence that certain personal resources can buffer the impact of spousal violence on psychological distress. The present study examined the roles of spousal violence and personal resources, including coping, mastery, and social support, in the psychological distress of CAF members' spouses (N = 1,892). Hierarchical r

The past and present threat of vector-borne diseases in deployed troops.

From time immemorial, vector-borne diseases have severely reduced the fighting capacity of armies and caused suspension or cancellation of military operations. Since World War I, infectious diseases have no longer been the main causes of morbidity and mortality among soldiers. However, most recent conflicts involving Western armies have occurred overseas, increasing the risk of vector-borne disease for the soldiers and for the displaced populations. The threat of vector-borne disease has changed with the progress in hygiene and disease control within the military: some diseases have lost their

Risks and predictors of HIV infection among adolescents in conflict regions of Nigeria.

OBJECTIVES: HIV remains highly prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, home to approximately 66 % of all people living with HIV and 85 % of children and adolescents living with HIV globally. The region also experiences the highest levels of armed conflict, resulting in a dual burden of violence and infectious diseases like HIV. Despite these challenges, few studies have explored the impact of war and armed conflict on HIV transmission among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. To address this gap in the literature, our study examines HIV risk behaviors among adolescents in both conflict and non-conflic

Exploring maternal and neonatal health in a conflict-affected setting: cross-sectional findings from Gaza.

BACKGROUND: Women experiencing armed conflict during pregnancy face a significantly higher risk of maternal and neonatal complications, including low-birthweight (LBW) babies, due to factors such as violence, stress, food insecurity, and limited access to healthcare. This study aims to explore maternal and neonatal health, as well as antenatal care (ANC) access during the war in Gaza. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 500 consecutive women and newborns delivered at the three largest obstetric centers in the Gaza Strip over a three-week span in late October and early November 2024.

War-related eye trauma: a study of civilian and military cases from Ukraine's ongoing conflict.

Forecasts indicate a substantial increase in the occurrence of eye injuries in future armed conflicts. The Russian invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, caused numerous eye injuries among civilians as well as military personnel, generating a serious epidemiological threat related to vision loss. The main goal of this study was to analyze different eye traumas in the Ukrainian population caused by hostilities, which could allow for a relative estimate of the occurrence of long-term consequences for the health care system, such as loss of vision in a large group of citizens. To assess …

Navigating Challenges and Adapting Innovations in Acute Kidney Injury and Kidney Failure.

Acute kidney injury and kidney failure represent critical health challenges, requiring continuous and specialized care. The impact of natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes, alongside man-made crises like armed conflicts and pandemics, exacerbates the complexities of managing these conditions. Disasters disrupt health care infrastructure, cause resource shortages, and pose ethical dilemmas in care allocation, often leading to surges in acute kidney injury cases and interruptions in kidney failure treatment. This article examines these challenges and underscores the impo…
