Evaluation of the Cadiax Compact® II accuracy in recording preadjusted condylar inclinations on fully adjustable articulator.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular movement analysis is a critical step in making the functional occlusal morphology and improving the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs). Cadiax Compact® is an electronic condylograph that claims to record the horizontal condylar inclination (HCI), Bennett angle (BA) and relative shape of the articular eminence. This study aims at assessing the accuracy of Cadiax Compact® II in its claimed abilities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The electronic condylograph (Cadiax Compact®II) was fitted on the fully adjustable articulator (gamma dental reference

[Uncommon variants of speech disorder in children: congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome].

This paper describes two cases of congenital bilateral perisylvian syndrome (CBPS), a rare disorder of late neuronal migration, which is characterized by language delay, intellectual disorders, epilepsy and bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria. Pseudobulbar paralysis and orofacial muscles dyspraxia causing drooling and feeding difficulties are common for patients with CBPS. Communicational problems lead to low self-esteem and social maladaptation. Literature data regarding correlation between polymicrogyria topography and speech disorders and articulation impairment severity are presented. The

Evaluation of multisyllabic word production in Canadian English- or French-speaking children within a non-linear phonological framework.

Currently, there is no theoretically justified, evidence-based metric for evaluating segmental and prosodic components of multisyllabic words (MSWs). A pilot study evaluated a MSW metric embedded in non-linear phonological- and language-processing frameworks. Six MSWs were analyzed in 10 Canadian English-speaking 5-year-olds with typically developing speech, and eight French-speaking children, ages 3-4 years, with protracted phonological development (PPD). Mismatches were tallied (with and without vowels), with totals ranked by word and participant, then compared with ranks from Phonological M

Influences of different palatoplasties on palatal growth and speech development: comparison between Osada's two-stage palatoplasty and one-stage mucosal flap procedure.

Palatal growth and articulation in two different palatal closure techniques, Osada's two-stage procedure and the conventional one-stage procedure, were evaluated in 12 patients. Osada's procedure (hard palate closure using a vomer flap with complete closure of the raw surface by a full thickness skin graft) is a two-stage operation that consists of early soft palate closure at the time of lip closure (3 to 6 months of age). The palatal sizes and the depth of the palatal arch were significantly greater in the two-stage group than in the one-stage group at 1 year of age and, 3 to 5 years of age.

Quantitative examination of isometric tongue protrusion forces in children with oro-facial dysfunctions or myofunctional disorders.

Oro-facial dysfunctions (OFD) or oro-facial myofunctional disorders in children lead to severe problems in teeth and jaw position, articulation, chewing and swallowing. The forces of the tongue, the central muscle for articulation, chewing and swallowing are focused on in several studies. In this examination, isometric tongue protrusion forces (TPF) of children with OFD and controls were compared. Thirty participants with OFD and 30 controls were presented a target force level as a straight line on a monitor that they were supposed to match by generating an isometric tongue force for different

Diagnosis of AOS: definition and criteria.

Presented in this article is a discussion of current progress in behavioral, cognitive, and neuroanatomic definitions of apraxia of speech (AOS). A behavioral definition summarizes the speech symptoms that should be considered diagnostic of AOS with or without co-occurring aphasia and dysarthria. AOS is defined in cognitive terms as an impairment in the translation of phonological representations into specifications for articulation. Progress toward a neuroanatomic definition of AOS will rely on mapping the processes described by increasingly sophisticated cognitive models of normal speech pro

Communication problems in Turner syndrome: a sample survey.

Turner syndrome is a condition first recognized in 1938 with an incidence estimated at 1/2500 female births. It is known to result from a missing X chromosome and has as its main features a short stature, ovarian dysgenesis, neck webbing, congenital peripheral lymphedema, coarctation of the aorta, cubitus valgus, dysplastic nails, and pigmented nevi. In addition, psychosocial difficulties including communication disorders may occur. While the physical characteristics of Turner syndrome have been well documented, information on the communication problems in Turner syndrome is scarce. This study

Speech treatment in Parkinson's disease: Randomized controlled trial (RCT).

BACKGROUND: As many as 89% of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) develop speech disorders. OBJECTIVES: This randomized controlled trial evaluated two speech treatments for PD matched in intensive dosage and high-effort mode of delivery, differing in subsystem target: voice (respiratory-laryngeal) versus articulation (orofacial-articulatory). METHODS: PD participants were randomized to 1-month LSVT LOUD (voice), LSVT ARTIC (articulation), or UNTXPD (untreated) groups. Speech clinicians specializing in PD delivered treatment. Primary outcome was sound pressure level (SPL) in reading and spon

Speech outcomes in 10-year-old children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate after one-stage lip and palate repair in the first year of life.

An evaluation of the results of one-stage repair of unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) performed at the Institute of Mother and Child, W … nstrated that 25 patients (89.3%) had normal nasal resonance. Severe hypernasality and compensatory articulation disorders caused by velopharyngeal insufficiency were assessed in one patient. In 13 patients (46.4%), oronasal fistulas were found. Two children (7%) with larger fistulas presented with mild hypernasality. In 11 cases (39.2%), fistula friction was heard at p …

A Neuromotor to Acoustical Jaw-Tongue Projection Model With Application in Parkinson's Disease Hypokinetic Dysarthria.

AIM: The present work proposes the study of the neuromotor activity of the masseter-jaw-tongue articulation during diadochokinetic exercising to establish functional statistical relationships between surface Electromyography (sEMG), 3D Accelerometry (3DAcc), and acoustic features extracted from the speech signal, with the aim of characterizing Hypokinetic Dysarthria (HD). A database of multi-trait signals of recordings from an age-matched control and PD participants are used in the experimental study. HYPOTHESIS: The main assumption is that information between sEMG and 3D acceleration, and ac

Intelligibility as a clinical outcome measure following intervention with children with phonologically based speech-sound disorders.

BACKGROUND: The effectiveness of two treatment approaches (phonological therapy and articulation therapy) for treatment of 14 children, aged 4;0-6;7 years, with phonologically based speech-sound disorder (SSD) has been previously analysed with severity outcome measures (percentage of consonants correct score, percentage occurrence of phonological processes and phonetic inventory). Considering that the ultimate goal of intervention for children with phonologically based SSD is to improve intelligibility, it is curious that intervention studies focusing on children's phonology do not routinely u

Speech delay in seven siblings with unusual sound preferences.

By the age of 8 years, children who are developing normally show almost adult speech skills. Children with serious phonological disorders, however, may exhibit significant differences in development well beyond the age of 8 years with little or no improvement in speech if therapy is not provided. This is a descriptive study of seven siblings, ranging in age from 6 to 14 years of age who had never attended school or received speech therapy until these ages. All of the children exhibited moderate to severe speech disorder with no evidence of predisposing genetic factors, hearing loss, physical a

Hypoglossal nerve palsy secondary to cervical spine involvement in rheumatoid arthritis: clinical and radiological features.

Isolated hypoglossal nerve (HN) palsy has been reported in a variety of disorders involving the cervical spine and/or skull base, however, unilateral HN palsy caused by rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has rarely been reported. We report herein an uncommon case of isolated HN palsy secondary to RA cervical spine involvement: pannus formation at the C1-C2 articulation, atlanto-axial subluxation, as well as, erosion of the right occipital condyle, lateral mass and anterior arch of C1. Pulse therapy with methylprednisolone followed by maintenance therapy with prednisone resulted in dramatic improvement.

Changes in function of the masticatory system from 7 to 10 years of age in relation to articulatory speech disorders.

The aim of the present study was to determine changes in function of the masticatory system in children with articulatory speech disorders and in the controls by re-examining a sample of 287 previously studied children from 7 to 10 years of age. Articulatory speech disorders were diagnosed by the same speech therapist during spontaneous speech and test words using the Remes Articulation Test. Mandibular movement capacity, occlusal interferences, slide between retruded and intercuspal positions, and signs and symptoms of the craniomandibular disorders (CMD) were recorded by a dentist. The follo

Achieving the next level in cleft speech intervention: A protocol of a randomized sham-controlled trial to provide guidelines for a personalized approach in children with cleft palate.

BACKGROUND: Compensatory cleft speech disorders can severely impact speech understandability and speech acceptability. Speech intervention is necessary to eliminate these disorders. There is, however, currently no consensus on the most effective speech therapy approach to eliminate the different subtypes of compensatory cleft speech disorders. AIMS: To compare the immediate, short- and long-term effects of three well-defined speech intervention approaches (i.e., a motor-phonetic approach, a linguistic-phonological approach and a combined phonetic-phonological approach) on the speech and healt

Phonological Treatment Options for Children with Expressive Language Impairment.

The vast majority of treatment efficacy research in the area of phonology focuses on issues relevant to children who have significant limitations in productive phonology but are "typically developing" in most other ways. The base of evidence to guide clinicians on planning intervention for children with phonological and cooccurring expressive language difficulties (PD + LI) is less well developed. Thus, the goal of this paper is to summarize the evidence on two treatment procedures designed to facilitate growth in phonological inventory for children who also require direct intervention to targ
