New biopreparation against Neofabraea, the causal agent of Bull's Eye Rot - development and influence on the apple's microbial community at the practical scale.

BACKGROUND: Apples are among the most important horticultural crops. Therefore, maintaining their postharvest quality is essential. Storage diseases, such as Bull's Eye Rot (BER), which is caused by Neofabraea spp. (syn. Pezicula, Phlyctema), poses a significant economic challenge to apple production. Its suppression is particularly significant as compared to other postharvest pathogens due to a specific latent mode of action. This work aims to improve BER disease management and fruit microbial quality in apple production, both of which are key aspects of sustainable horticultural systems. RE

Molecular phylogeny and ecological diversity of endolichenic fungi inhabiting Acarospora schleicheri (Ach.) A. Massal, isolated from a Chilean Andean zone.

High-altitude ecosystems in the Andes present diverse extreme environmental conditions, yet the fungal biodiversity associated with crustose lichens remains largely unexplored. This study investigated the culturable fraction of the Endolichenic Fungi (ELF) community associated with the lichen Acarospora schleicheri (Ach.) A. Massal, collected from the Chilean Altiplano. Using culture-dependent techniques, fungal strains were isolated and identified through macro- and micro-morphological characterization combined with molecular phylogenetics of the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region. Nematode controlling effects and safety tests of Duddingtonia flagrans biological preparation in sheep.

Duddingtonia flagrans is a nematode-trapping fungus that is widely used to control parasitic nematodes in livestock. After oral ingestion and passage through the digestive tract of animals, this microorganism captures nematodes in feces. Although many researchers have examined the safety of this fungus for humans, animals, and the environment, few reports have discussed the safety of nematode-trapping D. flagrans biologics for animals. In this study, D. flagrans safety was tested, while adverse effects and toxicities were examined in sheep. First, the nematode killing effects in naturally para

Finding the Right Host in the Darkness of the Cave-New Insights into the Ecology and Spatio-temporal Dynamics of Hyperparasitic Fungi (Arthrorhynchus nycteribiae, Laboulbeniales).

The aim of this study was to determine the presence of the hyperparasitic fungus Arthrorhynchus nycteribiae and to analyze its spatio-temporal pattern in the two bat flies (Penicillidia conspicua and P. dufourii) parasitizing on bats. We collected 612 samples of bat flies from 400 bats in 20 caves in the Central Balkans. Hyperparasite was identified based on morphological and molecular analyses of rDNA genes (LSU and SSU). A. nycteribiae was reported for the first time in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro, and confirmed in Serbia. Of the 20 sites examined, we found A. nycteribiae at 11 sit

Metabolic Shunting in Marine-Derived Diaporthe sp. SYSU-MS4722 Yields Diverse γ-Butyrolactone Derivatives with Anti-inflammatory Activity.

Filamentous fungi have significant potential to produce diverse secondary metabolites. However, the majority of fungal biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) remain cryptic under standard laboratory conditions, thereby limiting the chances of discovering novel metabolites. In our previous study, the marine fungus Diaporthe sp. SYSU-MS4722 was found to contain 130 BGCs, despite predominately producing phomoxanthone A and its analogues. By deleting the polyketide synthase gene phoE, which is responsible for the skeleton construction in the biosynthesis of phomoxanthone A, we successfully activated th

Identification, biological characterization of Cladobotryum mycophilum and its control during the fruiting process of Lyophyllum decastes.

Lyophyllum decastes is a type of edible and medicinal mushroom with high nutritional value. However, it can be infected by fungi during the fruiting process, which impairs the development of the industry. In this study, one pathogenic fungus was isolated from the diseased fruiting bodies of L. decastes. Morphological and molecular identification clarified that the causal agent of the disease was Cladobotryum mycophilum. Koch's postulates showed that C. mycophilum could infect L. decastes, and seriously affect mushroom yields. The biological properties of C. mycophilum were investigated. The da

A Burkholderia cenocepacia-like environmental isolate strongly inhibits the plant fungal pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici.

UNLABELLED: Fungal phytopathogens cause significant reductions in agricultural yields annually, and overusing chemical fungicides for their control leads to environmental pollution and the emergence of resistant pathogens. Exploring natural isolates with strong antagonistic effects against pathogens can improve our understanding of their ecology and develop new treatments for the future. We isolated and characterized a novel bacterial strain associated with the species Burkholderia cenocepacia, termed APO9, which strongly inhibits Zymoseptoria tritici, a commercially important pathogenic fungu

Enhanced white rot control in garlic bulbil using organic-inorganic hybrid materials as coating membranes.

Organic-inorganic hybrid materials have a range of applications due to their unique properties. Their application in agriculture brings alternatives for the controlled release of nutrients in the soil, the seed coating, the transport of herbicides, and the treatment of plant diseases. The present study aimed to investigate the use of fungicides incorporated into hybrid membranes formed by synthetic hectorite (LAPONITE®) and polymers in the pre-treatment of garlic bulbils exposed to the pathogen Stromatinia cepivora, which causes white rot. The coatings were selected by a germination test, base

Rice-Magnaporthe oryzae interactions in resistant and susceptible rice cultivars under panicle blast infection based on defense-related enzyme activities and metabolomics.

Rice blast, caused by rice blast fungus (Magnaporthe oryzae), is a global threat to food security, with up to 50% yield losses. Panicle blast is a severe form of rice blast, and disease responses vary between cultivars with different genotypes. Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated signaling reactions and the phenylpropanoid pathway are important defense mechanisms involved in recognizing and resisting against fungal infection. To understand rice-M. oryzae interactions in resistant and susceptible cultivars, we determined dynamic changes in the activities of five defense-related enzymes in re

Nodular lesions of the buttock for 20 years: the challenge of chromoblastomycosis in non-endemic settings.

Chromoblastomycosis is an implantation mycosis of the skin caused by certain species of melanised fungi. A man in his 50s, born in Kerala but living in England for 14 years, presented with a nodular lesion on his left buttock, which had been present for 20 years. Biopsy revealed muriform cells and fungal culture isolated Fonsecaea spp, consistent with a diagnosis of chromoblastomycosis. Treatment with oral terbinafine was initiated and changed to itraconazole based on results of antifungal susceptibility. Drug intolerance and low drug levels of itraconazole necessitated change to voriconazole

Efficacy Evaluation of a Commercial Formulation With Duddingtonia Flagrans in Equine Gastrointestinal Nematodes.

The indiscriminate use of antiparasitics for the treatment of helminths in horses has caused the ineffectiveness of commonly used chemical active principles, therefore, new alternatives such as the use of helminthophagous fungi have been studied. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the in vitro efficacy of the commercial formulation Bioverm, composed of the fungus Duddingtonia flagrans strain AC001, in the reduction of gastrointestinal nematode larvae in equine feces. In coproculture, the genus Cyathostomum sp. was the most prevalent in the analyzed samples. The commercial formulatio

Not all black fungus is mucormycosis: A challenging case of Medicopsis romeroi.

In this case of phaeohyphomycosis, fine needle aspiration cytology enabled a rapid diagnosis and prompt treatment. This infection is quite prevalent in immunocompromised individuals; however, the Medicopsis romeroi species is a rare causative agent. These cases are associated with inadequate response to standard antifungal therapy and require discussion.

Efficiency of inorganic fungicides against the formation of Erysiphe necator chasmothecia in vineyards.

BACKGROUND: A reduction in chasmothecia, an important inoculum of grape powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator Schwein.), is essential for disease control in vineyards; the use of fungicides during the formation of chasmothecia on vine leaves, late in the growing season, may accomplish this. Inorganic fungicides, such as sulphur, copper, and potassium bicarbonate, are very useful for this purpose because of their multisite mode of action. The aim of this study was to evaluate chasmothecia reduction using different fungicide applications late in the growing season in commercially managed vineyards an

The sourcil roundness index is a useful measure for quantifying acetabular concavity asphericity.

This study aimed to clarify the clinical utility of the sourcil roundness index (SRI), a novel index for quantifying the asphericity of the acetabular concavity, by determining (1) the difference in the SRI between dysplastic and normal hips and (2) the correlation between the SRI and radiographic parameters of hip dysplasia. We reviewed standing anteroposterior pelvic radiographs of 109 dysplastic and 40 normal hips. The SRI was determined as the ratio of the distance from the medial edge of the sourcil to the most concave point of the acetabular sourcil (A) to the distance from the medial to

Hidden fairy rings and males-Genetic patterns of natural Burgundy truffle (Tuber aestivum Vittad.) populations reveal new insights into its life cycle.

Burgundy truffles are heterothallic ascomycetes that grow in symbiosis with trees. Despite their esteemed belowground fruitbodies, the species' complex lifecycle is still not fully understood. Here, we present the genetic patterns in three natural Burgundy truffle populations based on genotyped fruitbodies, ascospore extracts and ectomycorrhizal root tips using microsatellites and the mating-type locus. Distinct genetic structures with high relatedness in close vicinity were found for females (forming the fruitbodies) and males (fertilizing partner as inferred from ascospore extracts), with hi

Impact of 'brown rot' caused by Gnomoniopsis castanea on chestnut fruits during the post-harvest process: critical phases and proposed solutions.

BACKGROUND: The brown rot fungus, Gnomoniopsis castanea, is the main organism responsible for the outbreak of chestnut postharvest decay that is threatening the sustainability of the chestnut market in Europe. Currently, no specific strategy is available to mitigate the impact and remediate the high losses of fruits in postharvest storage. In the present study, the different phases of chestnut handling in a standard facility plant were analyzed by evaluating the amount of fruit rot and infection by G. castanea at each phase. RESULTS: The warm bath (48 °C) was identified as the critical phase,
