Home blood pressure control status in 2017-2018 for hypertension specialist centers in Asia: Results of the Asia BP@Home study.

A self-measured home blood pressure (BP)-guided strategy is an effective practical approach to hypertension management. The Asia BP@Home study is the first designed to investigate current home BP control status in different Asian countries/regions using standardized home BP measurements taken with the same validated home BP monitoring device with data memory. We enrolled 1443 medicated hypertensive patients from 15 Asian specialist centers in 11 countries/regions between April 2017 and March 2018. BP was relatively well controlled in 68.2% of patients using a morning home systolic BP (SBP) cut…

The autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA)/Shoenfeld's syndrome: descriptive analysis of 300 patients from the international ASIA syndrome registry.

The autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA) is a recently identified condition in which the exposure to an adjuvant leads to an aberrant autoimmune response. We aimed to summarize the results obtained from the ASIA syndrome registry up to December 2016, in a descriptive analysis of 300 cases of ASIA syndrome, with a focus on the adjuvants, the clinical manifestations, and the relationship with other autoimmune diseases. A Web-based registry, based on a multicenter international study, collected clinical and laboratory data in a form of a questionnaire applied to patients w…

Southernmost Asia is the source of Japanese encephalitis virus (genotype 1) diversity from which the viruses disperse and evolve throughout Asia.

BACKGROUND: Although a previous study predicted that Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) originated in the Malaysia/Indonesia region, the virus is known to circulate mainly on the Asian continent. However, there are no reported systematic studies that adequately define how JEV then dispersed throughout Asia. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In order to understand the mode of JEV dispersal throughout the entire Asian continent and the factors that determine the dispersal characteristics of JEV, a phylogenetic analysis using Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations was conducted on all availa…

Variations in Practice among Asia-Pacific Surgeons and Recommendations for Managing Cervical Myelopathy: The First Asia-Pacific Spine Society Collaborative Study.

STUDY DESIGN: Surgeon survey. PURPOSE: To study the various surgical practices of different surgeons in the Asia-Pacific region. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Given the diversity among Asia-Pacific surgeons, there is no clear consensus on the preferred management strategies for cervical myelopathy. In particular, the role of prophylactic decompression for silent cervical spinal stenosis is under constant debate and should be addressed. METHODS: Surgeons from the Asia-Pacific Spine Society participated in an online questionnaire comprising 50 questions. Data on clinical diagnosis, investigations a…

International consensuses and guidelines on diagnosing and managing cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis by the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society (APVRS), the Asia-Pacific Professors of Ophthalmology (AAPPO) and the Asia-Pacific Society of Ocular Inflammation and Infection (APSOII).

With the paradigm changes in antiviral therapy, there are a myriad of emerging controversies in the management of cytomegalovirus retinitis (CMVR). A certain extent of variability exists in the management of CMVR among clinical practices worldwide. Hence, alignment in the management strategy is important towards optimizing the care of CMVR. An international panel of experts (IPE) formulated consensus statements for CMVR regarding to its 1) diagnosis, 2) screening, 3) treatment, 4) management in special populations and 5) emerging technologies. The clinical diagnosis of CMVR relies on patient's

Asian Organization for Crohn's and Colitis and Asia Pacific Association of Gastroenterology practice recommendations for medical management and monitoring of inflammatory bowel disease in Asia.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has increased in incidence and prevalence in Asian countries since the end of the 20th century. Moreover, differences in the cause, phenotypes, and natural history of IBD between the East and West have been recognized. Therefore, the Asian Organization for Crohn's and Colitis and the Asia Pacific Association of Gastroenterology have established recommendations on medical management of IBD in Asia. Initially, the committee members drafted 40 recommendations, which were then assessed according to Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation. …

Thalassaemia prevention in Asia: progress, challenges, and future directions.

Thalassaemia remains a major public health burden in Asia, where high carrier frequencies, diverse mutation spectra, and variable healthcare capacity continue to influence disease prevention and control. This Series paper summarises the status of thalassaemia prevention programmes across 14 Asian countries and highlights the key challenges and opportunities affecting their implementation. Singapore, Malaysia, the Maldives, and Thailand have established the most structured prevention strategies, incorporating combinations of public awareness, carrier screening, genetic counselling, and prenatal…

Continuous integral debridement: implementation in the Asia-Pacific region.

The health-economic burden of hard-to-heal wounds is rising across the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, yet regional data remain sparse, particularly for venous leg ulcers and pressure injuries. Effective wound bed preparation, including management of bioburden and biofilm, is central to healing outcomes, but debridement practice across APAC is inconsistent. In May 2026, the Journal of Wound Care published the continuous integral debridement (CID) concept, built around a four-step cleanse, debride, cleanse, dress (CDCD) cycle designed to standardise debridement in everyday clinical practice. This a…

Alcohol Control Policy in Southeast Asia: A Descriptive Review.

Southeast Asia plays a vital role in the global alcohol trade, with rapid economic growth and increasing intra-regional travel contributing to shifts in alcohol consumption. This descriptive review of publicly available data sources aims to assess the extent to which alcohol control policies in Southeast Asia align with the World Health Organization (WHO)'s SAFER framework. Data on alcohol consumption, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, religious demographics, and life expectancy were obtained from recent publicly available sources, including the World Bank Group and the WHO. Policy data…

Infection-driven cancers in Asia: implications from epidemiological transitions.

Gastric, liver, and cervical cancers account for a disproportionate share of the global cancer burden, particularly in Asia, where infection-related cancers remain a major public health challenge. This narrative review aims to provide an overview of the epidemiological transition of these cancers and their implications for cancer control in Asia. Updated population-attributable fractions and other epidemiological evidence indicate a declining contribution of infections to overall cancer incidence, reflecting ongoing epidemiological transitions. While prevention of infection-driven cancers in A…
