Issues of health care under weightlessness.

This review will address issues of effects of space flights on the body. Cardiovascular deconditioning often induce symptoms like orthostatic intolerance after flight, and during flight there will be space motion sickness during the first few days with headache, malaise, nausea and eventually vomiting. These symptoms disappear and do not interfere with the performance of the astronauts after several days. During long-term flights, effects will be muscle atrophy and calcium loss from the skeleton. Radiation effects will be a significant issue, increasing with the length of the space flight. Als

Anterior segment biomechanics and intraocular pressure in microgravity: implications for future spaceflight studies.

Spaceflight acutely but transiently elevates intraocular pressure (IOP), often attributed to cephalad fluid shift and choroidal expansion. We propose that anterior segment mechanics, including lens-iris diaphragm position and conventional outflow loading, may contribute to early IOP changes. Comparing phakic and pseudophakic eyes, paired with anterior segment OCT and complementary imaging aboard the International Space Station, could define mechanisms and inform astronaut screening and ocular risk mitigation.

Radiation on Earth or in Space: What Does It Change?

After having been an instrument of the Cold War, space exploration has become a major technological, scientific and societal challenge for a number of countries. With new projects to return to the Moon and go to Mars, radiobiologists have been called upon to better assess the risks linked to exposure to radiation emitted from space (IRS), one of the major hazards for astronauts. To this aim, a major task is to identify the specificities of the different sources of IRS that concern astronauts. By considering the probabilities of the impact of IRS against spacecraft shielding, three conclusions

From international ophthalmology to space ophthalmology: the threats to vision on the way to Moon and Mars colonization.

PURPOSE: To report the ophthalmological risks of space travel. METHODS: The literature about the effect of microgravity and cosmic radiation on the human eye has been reviewed, focusing on the so-called "spaceflight related neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS)", and possible remedies. RESULTS: The eye is the major candidate to suffer from the adverse space conditions, so much so that SANS is the main concern of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). SANS, that affects astronauts engaged in long-duration spaceflights, is characterized by optic nerve head swelling, flattening of the

[Prospects and technical challenges of non-invasive brain-computer interfaces in manned space missions].

During long-duration manned space missions, the complex and extreme space environment exerts significant impacts on astronauts' physiological, psychological, and cognitive functions, thereby posing direct risks to mission safety and operational efficiency. As a key bridge between the brain and external devices, brain-computer interface (BCI) technology enables precise acquisition and interpretation of neural signals, offering a novel paradigm for human-machine collaboration in manned spaceflight. Non-invasive BCI technology shows broad application prospects across astronaut selection, mission

Microbial applications for sustainable space exploration beyond low Earth orbit.

With the construction of the International Space Station, humans have been continuously living and working in space for 22 years. Microbial studies in space and other extreme environments on Earth have shown the ability for bacteria and fungi to adapt and change compared to "normal" conditions. Some of these changes, like biofilm formation, can impact astronaut health and spacecraft integrity in a negative way, while others, such as a propensity for plastic degradation, can promote self-sufficiency and sustainability in space. With the next era of space exploration upon us, which will see crew

Generating waist area-dependent ground reaction forces for long-duration spaceflight.

Prolonged microgravity exposure greatly weakens the bones and muscles of astronauts. This is a critical biomechanical issue for astronauts as they may be more prone to bone fractures. To combat this issue, lower body negative pressure (LBNP) is a concept that generates artificial gravitational forces that may help strengthen bones and muscles during long-term spaceflight. Negative pressure, defined as below ambient pressure, is applied within a chamber that encompasses the lower half of the body. By increasing the negative pressure, more ground reaction forces (GRFs) are generated beneath the

Do we have the guts to go? The abdominal compartment, intra-abdominal hypertension, the human microbiome and exploration class space missions.

Humans are destined to explore space, yet critical illness and injury may be catastrophically limiting for extraterrestrial travel. Humans are superorganisms living in symbiosis with their microbiomes, whose genetic diversity dwarfs that of humans. Symbiosis is critical and imbalances are associated with disease, occurring within hours of serious illness and injury. There are many characteristics of space flight that negatively influence the microbiome, especially deep space itself, with its increased radiation and absence of gravity. Prolonged weightlessness causes many physiologic changes th

Increased growth rate and amikacin resistance of Salmonella enteritidis after one-month spaceflight on China's Shenzhou-11 spacecraft.

China launched the Tiangong-2 space laboratory in 2016 and will eventually build a basic space station by the early 2020s. These spaceflight missions require astronauts to stay on the space station for more than 6 months, and they inevitably carry microbes into the space environment. It is known that the space environment affects microbial behavior, including growth rate, biofilm formation, virulence, drug resistance, and metabolism. However, the mechanisms of these alternations have not been fully elucidated. Therefore, it is beneficial to monitor microorganisms for preventing infections amon

Training complexity is not decisive factor for improving adaptation to visual sensory conflict.

Ground-based preflight training utilizing unusual visual stimuli is useful for decreasing the susceptibility to space motion sickness (SMS). The effectiveness of the sensorimotor adaptation training is affected by the training tasks, but what kind of task is more effective remains unknown. Whether the complexity is the decisive factor to consider for designing the training and if other factors are more important need to be analyzed. The results from the analysis can help to optimize the preflight training tasks for astronauts. Twenty right-handed subjects were asked to draw the right path of 4

Sex Difference in Orthostatic Tolerance During Simulated Partial Gravity Head-Up Tilts and Efficacy of a Lower Body Compression Garment Countermeasure.

After adaptation to weightlessness, astronauts will experience head-to-foot accelerations (G) during descent to and ascent from the lunar surface that may provoke symptoms of orthostatic intolerance (OI). There were no reports consistent with OI among Apollo astronauts who experienced up to 10 minutes of 0.4-0.6 G, while standing without OI countermeasures during dynamic flight phases, though heart rate (HR) was elevated. The likelihood of developing OI in future Artemis crews, which will include females, may be greater given observations of increased OI in females and potentially greater acce

Dynamic changes in perivascular space morphology predict signs of spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome in bed rest.

During long-duration spaceflight, astronauts experience headward fluid shifts and expansion of the cerebral perivascular spaces (PVS). A major limitation to our understanding of the changes in brain structure and physiology induced by spaceflight stems from the logistical difficulties of studying astronauts. The current study aimed to determine whether PVS changes also occur on Earth with the spaceflight analog head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR). We examined how the number and morphology of magnetic resonance imaging-visible PVS (MV-PVS) are affected by HDBR with and without elevated carbon dioxid

Fluid loading effects on temporal profiles of cardiovascular responses to head-down tilt.

BACKGROUND: Susceptibility of healthy astronauts to orthostatic hypotension and presyncope is exacerbated upon return from spaceflight. Up to 64% of astronauts experience postflight orthostatic intolerance. A promising countermeasure for postflight orthostatic intolerance is fluid loading by giving crew salt tablets and water prior to re-entry. The primary goal of the current study was to determine the optimal time window prior to re-entry when individual crew-persons would initiate fluid loading. METHODS: There were 16 subjects who were given two 6-h exposures, with and without fluid loading

Spaceflight-induced alterations in cerebral artery vasoconstrictor, mechanical, and structural properties: implications for elevated cerebral perfusion and intracranial pressure.

Evidence indicates that cerebral blood flow is both increased and diminished in astronauts on return to Earth. Data from ground-based animal models simulating the effects of microgravity have shown that decrements in cerebral perfusion are associated with enhanced vasoconstriction and structural remodeling of cerebral arteries. Based on these results, the purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that 13 d of spaceflight [Space Transportation System (STS)-135 shuttle mission] enhances myogenic vasoconstriction, increases medial wall thickness, and elicits no change in the mechanical pro

[PTH and immobilization induced osteopenia].

Decreased bone mass in the astronauts indicates that the gravity force is an important factor for bone physiology. Similarly, prolonged immobilization, such as bed-rest, induces severe osteopenia and pathological fracture. Recently the molecular mechanisms by which mechanical stress increases bone mass and immobilization induces osteopenia have been elucidated. In this manuscript, this molecular mechanism of the immobilization induced osteopenia and the promising roles of PTH in the pathogenesis and treatment of the immobilization induced osteopenia will be discussed briefly.

Circadian effects of ionizing radiation on reproductive function and clock genes expression in male mouse.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to the ionizing radiation (IR) encountered outside the magnetic field of the Earth poses a persistent threat to the reproductive functions of astronauts. The potential effects of space IR on the circadian rhythms of male reproductive functions have not been well characterized so far. METHODS: Here, we investigated the circadian effects of IR exposure (3 Gy X-rays) on reproductive functional markers in mouse testicular tissue and epididymis at regular intervals over a 24-h day. For each animal, epididymis was tested for sperm motility, and the testis tissue was used for da

Psychophysiological assessment and correction of spatial disorientation during simulated Orion spacecraft re-entry.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has identified a potential risk of spatial disorientation, motion sickness, and degraded performance to astronauts during re-entry and landing of the proposed Orion crew vehicle. The purpose of this study was to determine if a physiological training procedure, Autogenic-Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE), can mitigate these adverse effects. Fourteen men and six women were assigned to two groups (AFTE, no-treatment Control) matched for motion sickness susceptibility and gender. All subjects received a standard rotating chair test to determ

Effects of promethazine and midodrine on orthostatic tolerance.

INTRODUCTION: Astronauts experience both orthostatic hypotension and space motion sickness during re-entry. Midodrine, an alpha1-adrenergic agonist, is used to treat orthostatic hypotension. Promethazine, a histamine H1-receptor antagonist, is prescribed for space motion sickness. Many astronauts need both midodrine and promethazine. This study evaluated the interactive effects of midodrine and promethazine on hemodynamic responses to upright tilt. METHODS: Subjects (5 men; 3 women) were studied four times: control (no drug); midodrine only; promethazine only; or midodrine plus promethazine.
