UNLABELLED: A painful shoulder is a very common complaint among athletes, especially in the case of those in sports involving throwing. Partial lesions of the rotator cuff may be very painful and cause significant functional limitation to athletes' sports practice. The incidence of partial lesions of the cuff is variable (13-37%). It is difficult to make the clinical and radiological diagnosis, and this condition should be borne in mind in the cases of all athletes who present symptoms of rotator cuff syndrome, including in patients who are diagnosed only with tendinopathy.

This article discusses the role of ankle arthroscopy in the acute management of ankle trauma in athletes. The rate of intra-articular pathology associated with ankle trauma is high and arthroscopic treatment often has an important role to play. Its major role is in the assessment and treatment of joint surface damage, syndesmotic instability, and intra-articular fractures.

The number of children and adolescents participating in organised athletic activities worldwide is increasing. However, physical fitness levels among youth are lower today than in previous decades. The combination of increased exposure and decreased preparedness for sports participation has led to an epidemic of both acute and chronic sports-related injuries in this population. Poor physical fitness, in addition to having negative health consequences, seems to be a risk factor for sports-related injury. Accurate injury surveillance data are required to better define the magnitude of the proble

Athletic injuries of the hand and wrist are common. The key to management of these injuries is prevention. Certain sports require athletes to participate in positions that pose a higher risk of injury to the fingers and wrists. Once healing of the injured digit and wrist has occurred, rehabilitation of the injury is important. This requires close communication between the therapist and the strength and conditioning coach to allow strengthening exercises but limit traction to the involved injury in order to limit the risk of reinjury. Finally, once the injury has been rehabilitated, protective …

BACKGROUND: Triangular fibrocartilage (TFC) injuries are an increasingly recognized cause of ulnar-sided wrist pain and can be particularly disabling in the competitive athlete. Previous studies show that arthroscopic debridement or repair can improve symptoms, but the results of arthroscopic treatment of TFC injuries in high-level athletes have not yet been reported.
HYPOTHESIS: Arthroscopic debridement or repair of wrist TFC injury will allow a high rate of return to full function in the elite athlete.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.

Repetitive overhead throwing imparts high valgus and extension loads to the athlete's elbow, often leading to either acute or chronic injury or progressive structural change. Tensile force is applied to the medial stabilizing structures with compression on the lateral compartment and shear stress posteriorly. Common injuries encountered in the throwing elbow include ulnar collateral ligament tears, ulnar neuritis, flexor-pronator muscle strain or tendinitis, medial epicondyle apophysitis or avulsion, valgus extension overload syndrome with olecranon osteophytes, olecranon stress fractures, ost

Acute hand and wrist injuries in the athlete constitute a unique orthopaedic challenge. Because of the particular demands on the athlete (e.g., financial implications, coaching and administration pressures, self-esteem issues), a specialized management approach is often necessary. Common sites of injury include the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint, proximal interphalangeal joint, metacarpals and phalanges, scaphoid, hamate, and distal radius. Treatment of these injuries varies depending on the patient's age, sport, position played, and level of competition, but

During winter 1994/95 and 1995/96 a retrospective study was carried out in which datasets supported by questionnaires from 31 female and 64 male professional snowboarders were evaluated. Included were personal data and details of other types of sports. Also the personal style preferred and equipment used was integrated. Particularly of interest were the localization and causes of injury-patterns with the degrees of severity and overexertion disorders. Among the professionals the most frequent injuries occurred in the metacarpals and fingers (37.3%), the shoulder (36.0%), knee joints (33.3%) an

Treatment of athletes and the injuries they sustain can be both challenging and rewarding. Each individual case requires a careful examination of the physical symptoms and the process leading up to the injury. From this, one attempts to determine the appropriate course of treatment aimed at minimizing lost time from sports and to develop preventive strategies to promote healing and prevent future injury. Open communication between the athlete and his or her physician, therapist, trainer, and coach facilitates the most innovative and effective treatment strategies, enabling the best possible re

The purpose of this project was to describe the injury experiences of athletes with disabilities. A cross-disability instrument was developed to measure variables of interest. A retrospective survey was administered to 426 athletes who participated at the 1989 national competition of the National Wheelchair Athletic Association (NWAA), United States Association for Blind Athletes (USABA), and the United States Cerebral Palsy Athletic Association (USCPAA). The definition of injury was any trauma to the participant that occurred during any practice, training, or competition session that caused t

Stress fractures are an increasingly common injury in competitive athletes, especially runners. Amenorrheic athletes are at particularly high risk. A radionuclide bone scan should be considered when the index of suspicion for stress fracture is high. Plain radiographs are of little use in establishing the diagnosis in the early stages of the injury. Early diagnosis and prompt institution of conservative therapy allow for a favorable outcome in most cases. Avoidance of or reduced participation in the inciting activity is important for pain control. Certain stress fractures, such as those involv

The ankle is the site of frequent athletic injuries, the most significant of which include Achilles' rupture, peroneal tendon dislocation, and lateral ligamentous rupture. Evaluation techniques and treatment methods stressing an early but graduated return to function are discussed for the major soft tissue injuries of the ankle.

The Boston Brace System was developed to attain functional realignment of the scoliotic spine. This system uses prefabricated thermoplastic pelvic modules which can be rapidly fitted to an individual patient. These modules are available in 20 sizes and designed with a forward flexion of 30 degrees on the anterior margin and 15 degrees on the posterior surface. The resultant antilordotic straightening of the lumbar spine is important in correcting the scoliotic spine and has been found to be therapeutically effective in managing a number of other conditions of the spine, including back injuries

OBJECTIVES: Examination of the incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries in the collegiate soccer player population is limited, as is comparison between goalkeepers and field players. We hypothesized that goalkeepers would have a higher incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries than field players. Furthermore, we sought to determine the incidence of shoulder and elbow injuries among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) soccer players, and to determine injury risk factors.
METHODS: The NCAA Injury Surveillance Program database was analyzed for injuries to NCAA men's and women's soccer

BACKGROUND: Turf toe is the general term for a sprain of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint complex. Previously attributed to shoe design and artificial turf, the incidence of turf toe injury has been thought to decline with the advent of newer turf designs. However, the current incidence and epidemiology remain unknown as the majority of the literature consists of small series and addresses diagnosis and treatment rather than epidemiology and prevention.
METHODS: We examined data from the NCAA's Injury Surveillance System (ISS) for 5 football seasons (2004-2005 through 2008-2009), inc

UNLABELLED: Autonomic dysreflexia (AD) is unique to individuals with spinal injuries (SCI) at T6 or above and can be voluntarily induced. Although AD improves wheelchair racing performance in some athletes, it also elicits exaggerated blood pressure, which could be dangerous. The International Paralympic Committee considers AD doping and banned its use.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate AD knowledge, incidence and attitudes (KIA) of Paralympians with SCI.
METHODS: An existing questionnaire was modified to include questions of AD KIA, validated by three experts and piloted wit

BACKGROUND: The importance of achieving an adequate amount of sleep to optimize health and athletic performance is well recognized. Yet, a systematic evidence compilation of the risk for sport-related injury in adult athletic populations due to poor sleep does not exist.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between poor sleep and sport and physical training-related injuries in adult athletic populations.
DATA SOURCES: Electronic databases were searched using keywords relevant to sleep quantity and quality, and musculoskeletal injury and sport-related concussion (SRC).
