Relationship between conductive hearing loss and maxillary constriction.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between conductive hearing loss and maxillary constriction. METHOD: A total of 120 people, aged from 7 to 40 years, who were referred to an audiologist when taking out health insurance or for school pre-registration check-up, were selected for this study. A total of 60 participants who had hearing threshold levels greater than 15 dB in both ears were chosen as the conductive hearing loss group. The remaining 60, with normal hearing thresholds of less than 15 dB, were used as the control group. All participants were referred to an orthodontic clinic. Par

Disclosure of membership in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community by individuals with communication impairments: a preliminary web-based survey.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this preliminary investigation was to examine potential barriers to seeking services for communication impairments perceived by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Specifically, this clinical survey investigated (a) the rate and importance of disclosure of membership in the LGBT community by people with communication impairments to their clinicians and (b) the perception of bias of audiologists and speech-language pathologists against LGBT individuals with communication impairments. METHOD: A total of 192 people identifying as LGBT with a communicati…

Speech and language delay in children.

Speech and language delay in children is associated with increased difficulty with reading, writing, attention, and socialization. Although physicians should be alert to parental concerns and to whether children are meeting expected developmental milestones, there currently is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against routine use of formal screening instruments in primary care to detect speech and language delay. In children not meeting the expected milestones for speech and language, a comprehensive developmental evaluation is essential, because atypical language development can be a

Cochlear implant patients with superficial siderosis.

BACKGROUND: Considered a rare disorder, superficial siderosis of the central nervous system (SSCN) has become more frequently diagnosed in recent years. As it is characterized by progressive sensorineural hearing loss, patients' needs may surpass the capability of hearing aid technology. Despite the retrocochlear nature of the disorder, patients have undergone cochlear implantation (CI) with varying success. PURPOSE: To summarize the issues surrounding cochlear implant candidates with SSCN as well as highlight trends in performance postimplantation. RESEARCH DESIGN: Retrospective case report

Cochlear implant in Cogan's syndrome.

Post-lingual deafness is a stressful condition which is rendered even more painful by the sudden emotional isolation that the patient suffers. Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune cause for post-lingual deafness characterized by non-syphilitic interstitial keratitis, bilateral audio vestibular deficiencies and systemic vasculitis. World over very few cases of Cogan's syndrome have been reported. Cochlear implant surgery in such a patient is a challenging but highly satisfactory experience due to the multitude of clinical problems the patient faces. This demands a proper work up, meticulous su

[Drug-induced hearing loss as a manifestation of drug-induced ototoxicity].

The ability of drugs to have an ototoxic effect has been studied for a long time, however, the true prevalence of this undesirable phenomenon is unknown, which is due to the use of various audiological protocols, a wide range of reactions to drugs in different ethnic groups, and most importantly, the lack of caution with regard to otological symptoms due to their reversibility or lack of immediate threat to life. Drug-induced ototoxicity is a functional disorder of the inner ear (cochlea and/or vestibular apparatus) or eighth pair of cranial nerves. Pharmacotherapy, associated with the develop

Audiology's Nomenclature and Taxonomy Under the Law: Implications for Access and Coverage of Audiology Services.

Access to audiology services is shaped not only by clinical competence but also by the statutory language that defines the profession under … ecessary administrative burdens, reduced access for Medicare beneficiaries, and underutilization of audiologists' clinical expertise. Modernizing professional nomenclature and taxonomy at both the state and federal levels is presented as a foundational step toward improving access, aligning regulation with contemporary practice, and strengthening hearing healt …

Validity, reliability, and readability of Artificial Intelligence chatbots as public sources of information on hearing loss: a comparative evaluation of ChatGPT, Bing, Gemini, and Perplexity.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the validity, reliability and readability of four AI chatbots for hearing-health information. DESIGN AND STUDY SAMPLE: Three audiologists created 100 questions covering adult hearing loss, paediatric hearing, hearing aids, tinnitus and cochlear implants (20 each). Questions were submitted twice to ChatGPT-3.5, Bing AI, Gemini and Perplexity. Answers were scored for factual accuracy and completeness on a five-point Global Quality Score. Validity was defined using low (score = 5) and high (score ≥ 4) thresholds. Internal consistency was estimated with Cronbach's α; readabil…

3D printing as assistive technology for individuals with deafblindness: perspectives of rehabilitation professionals.

There is a growing body of evidence on practical applications of three-dimensional (3D) printing to support the rehabilitation of individuals with sensory impairments. However, applications in the field of deafblindness, or the combination of vision and hearing impairment, remain scarce. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore actual and potential applications of 3D printing in deafblindness rehabilitation from the perspective of rehabilitation professionals in two focus group discussions that involved orientation and mobility specialists, vision rehabilitation specialists, audiologists,…

Can an advanced audiology-led service reduce waiting times for paediatric ear nose and throat outpatient services?

AIM: Children with middle ear disease often experience lengthy delays waiting for outpatient paediatric ear nose and throat (ENT) services. This study aimed to investigate whether an alternative service delivery model using audiologists working in an expanded scope of practice reduced waiting times for children to access such services. METHODS: A total of 131 children consecutively referred to a large ENT outpatient service in Queensland, Australia, for middle ear and hearing concerns were prospectively allocated to either a standard ENT service or an advanced audiology (AA)-led service. Safe Medication Administration in Patients with Communication Disorders: A Simulation-Enhanced Interprofessional Education Approach.

Medications and their associated side effects impact systems treated by speech-language pathologists and audiologists, such as speech, language, voice, swallowing, hearing, tinnitus, and balance. LARS2 variants can present as premature ovarian insufficiency in the absence of overt hearing loss.

Premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) affects 1 in 100 women and is a leading cause of female infertility. There are over 80 genes in which variants can cause POI, with these explaining only a minority of cases. Whole exome sequencing (WES) can be a useful tool for POI patient management, allowing clinical care to be personalized to underlying cause. We performed WES to investigate two French sisters, whose only clinical complaint was POI. Surprisingly, they shared one known and one novel likely pathogenic variant in the Perrault syndrome gene, LARS2. Using amino-acylation studies, we establis

The Online HEARRING Counselling 1.0 Platform Provides Clinicians with Comprehensive Information on Hearing Device Solutions for Conductive, Mixed, and Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

A platform to help clinicians ensure that hearing device candidates are informed about the benefits and drawbacks of their recommended treatment option would be of clinical counselling benefit because it could help each candidate form realistic expectations about life with their treatment option. Following the World Café approach, 54 participants (surgeons, audiologist, and researchers) generated lists of the benefits and drawbacks of each treatment option for single-sided deafness (SSD) and bone conduction (BC) solutions. They then prioritized the benefits and drawbacks. After the World Café,
