Acoustic Voice Analysis of Arabic-Speaking Dysphonic Adults Using Praat Software.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine whether Praat-derived acoustic parameters can reliably differentiate abnormal from normal voices. In addition, it examined the relationship between maximum phonation time (MPT), cepstral peak prominence smoothed (CPPS), and the dysphonia severity index (DSI) with perceptual ratings of dysphonia severity. METHODS: A total of 178 monolingual Egyptian Arabic-speaking adults aged 21-50 years were recruited and divided into control (n = 100) and case groups (n = 78 with voice disorders). All underwent comprehensive voice assessment, including videolaryngostro

Alterations in Regional Homogeneity in Patients With Unilateral Chronic Tinnitus.

Chronic subjective tinnitus is a widespread disorder. This perceptual anomaly is assumed to result from a dysbalance of excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms on different levels of the auditory pathways. However, the brain areas involved are still under discussion. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigate differences in cerebral regional homogeneity (ReHo) between patients with unilateral chronic tinnitus and nontinnitus control subjects. To our knowledge, our study is the first to investigate the intraregional connectivity of patients with unilateral tinnitus i

Effects of mild hearing loss on auditory processing.

The impact on language learning of mild hearing loss due to otitis media with effusion has forced a new look at the dynamics of central auditory processing. A model of auditory deprivation that would produce the test results that define CAP deficits would be a mild conductive hearing loss. It is relevant to reexamine CAP theory in terms of such hearing loss.

Perceptual Classification of Motor Speech Disorders: The Role of Severity, Speech Task, and Listener's Expertise.

PURPOSE: The clinical diagnosis of motor speech disorders (MSDs) is mainly based on perceptual approaches. However, studies on perceptual classification of MSDs often indicate low classification accuracy. The aim of this study was to determine in a forced-choice dichotomous decision-making task (a) how accuracy of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in perceptually classifying apraxia of speech (AoS) and dysarthria is impacted by speech task, severity of MSD, and listener's expertise and (b) which perceptual features they use to classify. METHOD: Speech samples from 29 neurotypical speakers,

Amusia representing impairment of absolute pitch perception due to damage to the middle longitudinal fasciculus: a case report.

Absolute pitch (AP) is the ability to identify the pitch of isolated tones without reference to an external pitch. A 21-year-old semi-professional musician with a previous ability for AP developed a left-hemispheric cerebral hemorrhage due to an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). One month after the hemorrhage, she underwent surgery to treat the AVM, resulting in the resolution of her aphasia and right upper limb clumsiness. However, her AP ability was lost. Before the hemorrhage, she could dictate complex music that she listened to, but afterward, she could no longer identify even a single ton

How auditory temporal processing deficits relate to dyslexia.

Studies have shown that dyslexic children present a deficiency in the temporal processing of auditory stimuli applied in rapid succession. However, discussion continues concerning the way this deficiency can be influenced by temporal variables of auditory processing tests. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to analyze by auditory temporal processing tests the effect of temporal variables such as interstimulus intervals, stimulus duration and type of task on dyslexic children compared to a control group. Of the 60 children evaluated, 33 were dyslexic (mean age = 10.5 years) and 27

Auditory temporal processing deficits in children with reading disabilities.

The role of central auditory processing in reading skill development and reading disorders is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine whether individuals with specific reading disabilities (SRD) have deficits in processing rapidly presented, serially ordered non-speech auditory signals. To this end, we compared 12 children with SRD and 12 children without SRD on their ability to detect differences and similarities in pure tones of 1000 and 2000 Hz when these signals were presented in pairs (same or different tones, randomly ordered) with short (50 ms) versus long (500 ms) inter-stimu

Alternative organization of speech perception deficits in children.

Children's first-language perception base takes shape gradually from birth onwards. Empirical research has confirmed that children may continue to fall short of age-based expectations in their speech perception. The purpose of this study was to assess the contribution of various perception processes in both reading and learning disabled children. A series of experiments was carried out with 450 Hungarian-speaking schoolchildren: learning disabled, reading disabled and typically developing control first-, second-, and third-graders. Data from seven perception tasks - focusing on acoustic, phone

Auditory processing deficits in rats with neonatal hypoxic-ischemic injury.

Hypoxia-ischemia (HI) refers to reduced blood oxygenation and/or a diminished amount of blood perfusing the brain, and is associated with premature birth/very low birth weight (VLBW). HI represents a common cause of injury to the perinatal brain. Indeed, a significant number of premature/VLBW infants go on to demonstrate cognitive/behavioral deficits, with particularly high incidence of disruptions in language development. Auditory processing deficits, in turn, have been suggested to play a causal role in the development of language impairments. Specifically, the inability to identify fast ele

Hearing of a presence.

Here we describe a patient with epilepsy (secondary to left parieto-temporal brain damage) suffering from the paroxysmal unilateral experience of hearing a person in her near extrapersonal space. The paroxysmal auditory experience was associated with a deficit in spatial auditory perception and other paroxysmal disorders of somatognosia. Based on these findings, it is suggested that the paroxysmal hearing of a person nearby corresponds to an auditory disorder of somatognosia.

Auditory temporal processing and lexical/nonlexical reading in developmental dyslexics.

Relationships between lexical/nonlexical reading and auditory temporal processing were examined. Poor nonlexical readers (poor nonword readers, phonologic dyslexics) had difficulty across tone tasks irrespective of speed of presentation or mode of recall. Poor lexical readers (poor irregular word readers, surface dyslexics) had difficulty recalling tones in a sequence only when they were presented rapidly. Covariate analysis supported these findings, revealing that nonlexical (nonword) reading performance is associated with general auditory performance, but lexical (irregular word) reading is

Background noise in rooms used for pure-tone audiometry in disability assessment.

Background noise limits for audiometry are determined by the effects of masking and are specified in international standards. The standards provide for audiometric testing over a range of audiometric frequencies extending down to 500 Hz or lower. The lowest frequency of testing is an important factor determining the admissible noise, and for certain applications it is appropriate to consider the limits applicable to testing over a more restricted range. Assessment of hearing disability in the UK is generally based on a consideration of pure-tone hearing threshold levels in the frequency range

The Minimal Important Difference of Acoustic Voice Quality Index in the Treatment of Voice Disorders.

OBJECTIVES: The acoustic voice quality index (AVQI) is a reliable tool that objectively assesses dysphonia levels using six acoustic parameters. Despite its high criterion-related concurrent validity, diagnostic accuracy, and minimal detectable change derived from test-retest reliability, the minimal important difference (MID) of the AVQI has not been tested before. This study aimed to estimate the MIDs of AVQI for improvement audibly perceived by clinicians and self-reported improvement by patients. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on 110 patients who received treatment for voice

Development of a Battery to Assess Perceptual-Motor, Cognition, Language, and Scholastic Skills among Bengali Children with Neuro Developmental Disorders.

BACKGROUND: School failure or poor academic performance is often found in neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD); however, there is a dearth of a comprehensive assessment tool to evaluate various underlying deficits, including perceptual-motor, cognitive, language, and scholastic skills of those who have NDD. The study aimed to develop a test to fill-up this gap. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study followed three phases: the construction of an assessment battery in both Bengali and English languages, separately, incorporating tasks on perceptual-motor, cognitive, language, and scholastic skills; doi

Acoustic assessment of dysphonia: Current practice and future directions - A narrative review.

Auditory-perceptual judgment remains the clinical gold standard for characterizing dysphonia; however, its inherent subjectivity has motivated the search for objective acoustic correlates. This narrative review synthesizes the historical and methodological progression of voice acoustics from early time-domain perturbation measures (such as jitter and shimmer) and various implementations of the harmonics-to-noise ratio toward cepstral-spectral analysis capable of robust assessment of connected speech. We summarize the rationale and evidence underpinning cepstral peak prominence and multivariate

[Impaired recognition of environmental sounds in patients with dementia : I can hear but I do not understand].

BACKGROUND: Impairment of central auditory processing is a well-known symptom of neurodegenerative dementia; however, whilst numerous studies have examined verbal processing impairment, to date few have attempted to describe impairments of non-verbal, environmental sound recognition in patients with dementia. As these impairments may have direct implications on patient support and care, such studies are urgently necessary. AIM OF THE STUDY: The aim of the study was to determine whether the recognition of meaningful environmental sounds is impaired in patients with mild or early stage neurodeg

Aberrant Cardiac Interoception in Psychosis.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: There is mounting evidence that cardiac interoception, the perception of one's heartbeat, is central to affective experiences. It has been proposed that symptoms of psychosis could arise from interoceptive dysfunction. Here we hypothesized that people with psychotic disorders would have a specific impairment in cardiac interoception, over and above broader perceptual deficits. STUDY DESIGN: 43 adults with a history of psychosis (31 schizophrenia, 12 schizoaffective disorder) and 41 matched control participants completed a heart rate discrimination task. Participants

Polysomnography Applied to Patients with Tinnitus: A Review.

Introduction  Tinnitus has been defined as an "auditory phantom perception," meaning that tinnitus results from an abnormal activity within the nervous system, in the absence of any internal or external acoustic stimulation. About 10 to 15% of the adult population is affected by tinnitus, and a relevant percentage of tinnitus sufferers experience symptoms severe enough to significantly affect quality of life, including sleep disturbances, work impairment, and, in some cases, psychiatric distress. The self-rated complaints about tinnitus focus on emotional distress, auditory perceptual difficul

Abnormal auditory neural activity in individuals with spinal muscular atrophy.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hypotonia, progressive muscle weakness and atrophy caused by progressive loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord and lower cranial nerve nuclei. The disease has also been associated with sensory neuropathies affecting the visual, somatosensory and auditory pathways. This case-control study investigated auditory neural function and perceptual ability in children and young adults with SMA. Twenty individuals with genetically confirmed SMA of varying severity (Types 1-3) participated. Sixteen children/young adults
