Overactive bladder as a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system - A narrative review.

Overactive bladder (OAB) is a common condition with increasing prevalence. However, its aetiology is not fully understood. The main symptoms are sudden urge to urinate, with or without incontinence; increased daytime frequency; and nocturia. OAB-like symptoms can be caused by a number of diseases, including urinary tract infections, neurologic and metabolic diseases, and neoplasms. The final diagnosis is made after excluding all the abovementioned factors. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction has also been identified as a possible cause of so-called 'idiopathic OAB'. In order to check th…

Autonomous nervous system regulation of pain in children with cerebral palsy.

Aim: Children with cerebral palsy (CP) have increased pain sensitivity and recurrent pain episodes; however, pain is underreported in children with intellectual impairment. Cardiac autonomic regulation is imbalanced in chronic pain conditions and neurological disorders. This study aims at exploring the autonomous nervous system regulation of pain in children with CP compared with typically developing peers (TDP).Method: Heart rate variability (HRV) was recorded during 24 hours in 26 children with CP and 26 TDP, and examined offline at baseline (sleeping, seated rest) and during spontaneous pai

Parturition in horses is dominated by parasympathetic activity of the autonomous nervous system.

External and internal stressors prolong parturition in different species. At parturition, sympathoadrenal activation should be avoided because an increased sympathetic tone may cause uterine atonia via β2-receptors. We hypothesized that at physiological parturition, horses are under parasympathetic dominance, and stress-response mechanisms are not activated during delivery of the foal. To evaluate stress responses, heart rate, heart rate variability, catecholamines, and cortisol were analyzed in mares (n = 17) throughout foaling. Heart rate decreased from 2 hours before (51 ± 1 beats/minute) t

The effects of drugs used to treat obesity on the autonomic nervous system.

OBJECTIVE: Body fatness is partly under hypothalamic control with effector limbs, which include the endocrine system and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). In previous studies we have shown, in both obese and never-obese subjects, that weight increase leads to increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic activity, whereas weight decrease leads to decreased sympathetic and increased parasympathetic activity. We now report on the involvement of such ANS mechanisms in the action of anti-obesity drugs, independent of change in weight. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Normal weight males (…

[Status of the autonomic nervous system and reflexotherapy in children with vasomotor rhinitis].

Different variants of vegetative nervous system dysfunction were identified during the examination of 86 children with vasomotor rhinitis. Based on the findings of the examination a pathogenetically-based method of acupuncture was proposed for the management of this patients' group. Acupuncture with regard to vegetative dysfunction attenuated the latter's manifestations and corrected associated psychoemotional disorders. As a result the clinical manifestations of vasomotor rhinitis were eliminated.

The Protective Role of the Autonomic Nervous System in Intergenerational Cycles of Neglect.

Offspring of parents who experienced childhood neglect are at increased risk for developing internalizing problems. Empirical evidence suggests this link is principally mediated through parenting behavior. However, such intergenerational cycles of adversity are found to be disrupted in many families. Parasympathetic nervous system functioning is well documented to mediate individuals' emotion regulation biologically. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is a validated biomarker for parasympathetic activity. The goal of the current study was to investigate the moderating role of parent RSA reacti

The autonomic nervous system in anorexia nervosa - an implication for the fat tissue.

Eating disorders are a heterogeneous group of diseases affecting mainly young people in developed countries. Among them, anorexia nervosa (AN) is the one with the highest mortality, up to five times higher compared to healthy individuals. The etiology of this medical condition is complex and still un- certain. However, disturbances of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and increased lipolysis resulting in a decrease of the adipose tissue volume are common findings among AN patients. Since ANS is directly connected to adipocyte tissue, thus significantly affecting the body's metabolic homeostas…

The Function of the Autonomic Nervous System in Asian Patients With Chronic Migraine.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenic mechanisms underlying the autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction in patients with chronic migraine (CM) remain unclear. This study investigated the pathogenesis of ANS dysfunction in this population. METHODS: A total of 60 patients diagnosed with CM and 60 healthy subjects were recruited to participate in this study. The pupil diameter, pupil contraction velocity, latency, amplitude, and the maximum gradient recovery time were examined before, at 2 min and at 5 min after the cold pressor test, which was combined with the pupillary light reflex method. A brain 3D…

Down syndrome and the autonomic nervous system, an educational review for the anesthesiologist.

Approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, or 0.14%. Children with Down syndrome have cognitive impairment and congenital malformations necessitating frequent occurrences of general anesthesia and surgery. The thoughtful perioperative care of children with Down syndrome is relevant and acutely complex for the pediatric anesthesiologist. Behavior, sedation, hypotonia, upper airway obstruction, venous access, and bradycardia are omnipresent concerns apart from the surgical pathology. Down syndrome is also associated with autonomic nervous system dysfun…

A study of gata3 and phox2b expression in tumors of the autonomic nervous system.

Autonomic neurons and chromaffin cells, which constitute the autonomic nervous system, are derived from a common progenitor from the neural crest, and its development is controlled by a network of transcription factors, including the master regulator, Phox2b, and its downstream, Gata3. Anti-Phox2b and anti-Gata3 antibodies were applied to a total of 77 autonomic nervous system tumors, including 35 paragangliomas, 21 pheochromocytomas, 9 neuroblastomas, 4 ganglioneuroblastomas, and 8 ganglioneuromas, as well as their potential morphologic mimics, including tumors of the small round cell tumor g…

Dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system predicts the development of the metabolic syndrome.

CONTEXT: Stress is suggested to lead to metabolic dysregulations as clustered in the metabolic syndrome. Although dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system is found to associate with the metabolic syndrome and its dysregulations, no longitudinal study has been performed to date to examine the predictive value of this stress system in the development of the metabolic syndrome. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether autonomic nervous system functioning predicts 2-year development of metabolic abnormalities that constitute the metabolic syndrome. DESIGN: Data of the baseline and 2-year follow-up as…

[Peripheral neuropathy with autonomous nervous system involvement in the course of dermatomyositis].

A peripheral neuropathy occurs rarely during the course of an inflammatory myopathy. Once the classical aetiologies of peripheral neuropathies are ruled out, the diagnosis of neuromyositis can be accepted. We report a patient with dermatomyositis who presented a peripheral neuropathy revealed by dysautonomia. The presence of associated vasculitis led us to consider that this constituted the mechanism of the neurological involvement.

Disorders of the central and autonomic nervous systems as a cause for emesis in infants.

Vomiting in infants can be caused by a wide variety of neurological disorders. All involve stimulation of a central pattern generator for vomiting located in the brainstem, the nucleus tractus solitarius. This, in turn, projects to multiple motor nuclei involved in the vomiting reflex. The chemoreceptor trigger zone (the area postrema) in the floor of the fourth ventricle is a major afferent to the nucleus tractus solitarius that can be stimulated by pressure from hydrocephalus, closed head injuries, or tumors. Other neurological causes of vomiting discussed include migraine, epilepsy, and dys

The effects of acute and chronic ingestion of ethanol on the autonomic nervous system.

Evidence is reviewed linking clinical effects of ethanol with actions on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The studies reported include a series of investigations by the authors. Acutely, ethanol causes peripheral vasodilation and may also result in changes in heart rate and blood pressure. Ethanol may contribute to acute problems which may present clinically, including micturition syncope, accidental hypothermia and facial flushing. However, increased sympathetic nervous activity plays a role in causing hypertension and other symptoms during ethanol withdrawal in chronic al

Varied effects of experimental diabetes on the autonomic nervous system of the rat.

Disorders of the autonomic nervous system are a frequent late complication of human diabetes. They have been extensively studied clinically, yet their pathologic aspects are still poorly understood. Also, reports on the autonomic nervous system in animal models for diabetes are scanty. Therefore we have investigated sympathetic preganglionic and postganglionic nerve fibers, vagal fibers, as well as sympathetic and enteric neurons of male Wistar rats 1 year after streptozotocin or vehicle injection. By light and electron microscopic morphology we observed: various degenerative changes in sympat…
