INTRODUCTION: Several practice guidelines exist from professional organizations in the United States to support the assessment and management of eating disorders in children and adolescents. This manuscript synthesizes the key areas of overlap from these guidelines and provides directions for future research and alignment to improve care.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Consistent screening for eating disorders in primary care is recommended to ensure early identification and referral to treatment. Outpatient treatment supported by families, including family based treatment, is the first line of care recomm

Background: Autistic traits are overrepresented among individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and are associated with greater eating disorder (ED) psychopathology, psychological distress, and work and social functioning difficulties in this population. However, less is known about the prevalence and clinical associations of autistic traits in other ED presentations, such as bulimia nervosa (BN). This study examined the prevalence of autistic traits and their associations with ED psychopathology, psychological distress, and work and social functioning difficulties in a transdiagnostic ED sample.

Picky eating is a childhood behavior that vexes many parents and is a symptom in the newer diagnosis of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) in adults. Pressure to eat, a parental controlling feeding practice aimed at encouraging a child to eat more, is associated with picky eating and a number of other childhood eating concerns. Low intuitive eating, an insensitivity to internal hunger and satiety cues, is also associated with a number of problem eating behaviors in adulthood. Whether picky eating and pressure to eat are predictive of young adult eating behavior is relatively uns

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorder (ED) treatment outcomes are highly variable from beginning to end of treatment; however, little is known about differential trajectories during the course of treatment. This study sought to characterize heterogeneous patterns of ED treatment response during residential care.
METHOD: Participants were adolescent girls and adult women (N = 360) receiving residential ED treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, other specified feeding or eating disorder, unspecified feeding or eating disorder, or avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is increasingly recognized in high-income countries, driven by conditions such as gastrointestinal disorders, restrictive diets, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). ARFID, particularly prevalent in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), can lead to severe nutrient deficiencies with systemic and ophthalmological consequences. We present a series of pediatric patients with ASD and ARFID who developed severe, progressive vision loss due to optic canal hyperostosis and compressive optic neuropathy associated with VAD.

Fear of weight gain is a cardinal feature of eating disorders, including Anorexia Nervosa (AN). This fear motivates behaviors aimed at avoiding weight gain, such as restricting food intake. Of note, avoidance in AN is not confined to food-related items but extends to intense emotional states. Despite the presence of several forms of excessive avoidance in AN, little is known about the mechanisms underpinning avoidance behavior in AN. In the present exploratory study, we investigated whether university students with an elevated desire to avoid weight gain (as measured through self-reported Driv

Eating disturbances are common in children placing a vulnerable group of them at risk for full-syndrome eating disorders and adverse health outcomes. To provide a valid self-report assessment of eating disorder psychopathology in children, a short form of the child version of the Eating Disorder Examination (ChEDE-Q) was psychometrically evaluated. Similar to the EDE-Q, the ChEDE-Q provides assessment of eating disorder psychopathology related to anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder; however, the ChEDE-Q does not assess symptoms of avoidant/restrictive food intake disor

Background: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and selective eating are increasingly recognized in pediatric nutrition, but food selectivity has been predominantly studied in dedicated eating disorder settings and in underweight children, potentially underestimating its prevalence across broader clinical populations. This study aimed to characterize food selectivity as a transdiagnostic feature in children referred to a tertiary pediatric nutrition center, regardless of referral diagnosis or BMI status. Methods: This retrospective observational study included 417 consecutive chi

OBJECTIVE: Many children with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) cannot access appropriate care, as existing individual and family treatments are scarce, long and costly. We developed a brief 2-day (12-h) multidisciplinary parent training group and assessed its feasibility and acceptability in routine care.
METHOD: Single-arm implementation study in one tertiary centre. Parents of 18 children (5-14 years) with DSM-5 ARFID (17/18 sensory-based; non-French-speaking families excluded) attended two days three weeks apart. Guided by the RE-AIM framework, we assessed reach, feasibili

OBJECTIVE: Emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are a robust risk factor for eating disorder (ED) psychopathology. As symptoms are often overlooked or misattributed to ageing, these associations are unclear in older adults. This study investigated the longitudinal relationships between ER difficulties, ED psychopathology (e.g., thinness-oriented ED psychopathology and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder [ARFID] symptoms), and eating-related psychosocial impairment among Chinese older adults.
METHOD: An online sample of 551 Chinese adults aged 56-78 provided data at baseline (T1), and 20

Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) constitutes a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental condition frequently accompanied by considerable disturbances in feeding behavior and nutritional balance. These difficulties arise from complex and multifactorial mechanisms, exerting a significant impact on physical health, metabolic homeostasis, and psychosocial functioning. The present review aims to provide a critical synthesis of current evidence regarding the underlying biological and behavioral mechanisms of feeding difficulties in ASD and to delineate the spectrum of comorbid eating disorders wit

UNLABELLED: This study aimed to characterize menstrual irregularities in adolescents with eating disorder (ED) and assess their variation across diagnostic subtypes, clinical course, and clinical determinants. This retrospective study included postmenarcheal female adolescents with EDs and followed in an adolescent medicine clinic between 2015 and 2025. Demographic, anthropometric, clinical, and menstrual data at admission and during follow-up were extracted from medical records. The study included 491 adolescents: 178 (36.3%) with anorexia nervosa (AN), 184 (37.5%) with atypical AN (AAN), 76

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) believe that diet plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of their disease and the exacerbation of their symptoms. They often adopt restrictive diets that can lead to malnutrition, anxiety, and stress. Recent studies have found a correlation between IBD and eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder). None of these studies report an association with orthorexia nervosa, which is an obsession with healthy and natural foods. The aim of this study was to assess the risk of orthorexia nervosa in…

OBJECTIVE: Information on nutritional rehabilitation for underweight patients with avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is scarce. This study characterized hospitalized youth with ARFID treated in an inpatient (IP)-partial hospitalization behavioral eating disorders (EDs) program employing an exclusively meal-based rapid refeeding protocol and compared weight restoration outcomes to those of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN).
METHOD: Data from retrospective chart review of consecutive underweight admissions (N = 275; age 11-26 years) with ARFID (n = 27) were compared to those w

BACKGROUND: Chronic diseases involving strict dietary adherence have been associated with an increased risk of eating disorders (EDs). This is the first systematic review investigating the rate of EDs among individuals with food allergies (FAs).
OBJECTIVE: To report the incidence, prevalence, and types of EDs in individuals with FAs.
METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, we searched 4 databases for studies published to January 2022 that reported the prevalence or incidence of EDs in samples with immunoglobulin E (IgE) or no

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with connective tissue disorders (CTDs) commonly experience gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms resulting from disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI) and may attempt to manage GI distress with dietary restriction. Among adults with CTDs, we aimed to: (1) identify the prevalence and characteristics of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) symptoms (ARFID+) and other eating disorder (e.g., anorexia nervosa, binge eating disorder, etc.) symptoms (Other-ED+), and (2) explore the relationship between GI symptom severity and ARFID+/Other-ED+.
