Bullying and HIV Risk Among High School Teenagers: The Mediating Role of Teen Dating Violence.

BACKGROUND: Teen dating violence (TDV), bullying, and HIV risk behaviors are public health concerns that impact adolescents in the United States. National estimates reveal high rates of these risk behaviors among high school students. Based on theoretical and empirical evidence, we hypothesized that experiencing teen dating violence (sexual and physical) would mediate the impact of bullying on HIV risk. METHODS: Data were from the 2013 National Youth Behavior Risk Surveillance Survey (YRBSS) among students who answered questions on bullying, TDV, and HIV risk (N = 13,571). The YRBSS is conduc

Preventable causes of cancer in Texas by race/ethnicity: Major modifiable risk factors in the population.

BACKGROUND: A number of modifiable risk factors have been designated as being causally related to cancer development. We aimed to estimate the percentage of incident cancer cases diagnosed in persons aged ≥25 years in Texas in 2015, overall and by race/ethnicity, that were attributable to these modifiable risk factors. METHODS: We calculated population attributable fractions (PAFs) for cancers attributable to thirteen modifiable risk factors using prevalence data from the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, as well as rela…

The Association Between Social Determinants of Health and HIV Risk Behaviors and HIV Testing Among Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals: A National Survey Study.

Social determinants of health (SDOH) predispose Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) individuals to HIV infection through risky behaviors and less HIV testing. This study used data from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey to evaluate the association between composite measures of SDOH and HIV risk behaviors and HIV testing among adult SGM population in the US. SGM individuals were identified through two questions that asked about respondents' sexual orientation and gender identity. Two primary outcomes of interest were HIV testing behavior and HIV risk behavior. SDOH …

Validity and Reliability of the Kessler 6 Scale for Serious Mental Illness Among Populations with High Burden of HIV.

The Kessler 6 (K6) scale has been widely used to screen for serious mental illness (SMI) in general populations. Given that populations with high burden of HIV may be more likely to experience poor mental health outcomes, it is important to validate measures used to assess SMI among these groups. Using data from CDC's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) system in the United States, we examined psychometric characteristics of the K6 scale, including exploratory factor analysis, scale reliability, construct validity, and review of interviewer feedback to explore scale performance in the

Geographic and sociodemographic differences in cervical cancer screening modalities.

Cervical cancer screening recommendations for women aged 30-65 years include co-testing (high-risk human papillomavirus [hrHPV] with Pap testing) every five years or Pap testing alone every three years. Geographic variations of these different screening modalities across the United States have not been examined. We selected 82,426 non-pregnant women aged 30-65 years from the 2016 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System with data on sociodemographics, hysterectomy, and cervical cancer screening, representing 42 states and the District of Columbia. Logistic regression models with predicted ma…

Young Adults and Adverse Childhood Events: A Potent Measure of Cardiovascular Risk.

INTRODUCTION: While cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death, its determinants include unhealthy behaviors and clinical risk factors and are recognized as the "actual causes" of death. Risk likely accumulates over the life course, and adverse childhood experiences may increase the risk of "actual causes" of death. The objectives of the study are to determine the prevalence and test the association of adverse childhood experiences among unhealthy behaviors and risk factors as a primordial risk factor among young adults. METHODS: Data were extracted from the 2009 and 2011 Behavioura

Brief Report: Nonfatal Overdose Events Among Persons Who Inject Drugs: Findings From Seven National HIV Behavioral Surveillance Cities 2009 & 2012.

The rate of drug and opioid overdose deaths in the United States has more than tripled over the past 15 years. The ability to conduct public health surveillance on nonfatal overdoses is limited. The current study used National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) data to estimate recent and lifetime history of nonfatal overdose events in persons who inject drugs in 7 cities. Recent and lifetime experience of overdose events ranged from 3% to 20% and from 29% to 63%, respectively. Adapting systems such as NHBS may be useful in responding to and monitoring emergent public health problems such as t
